Divinity: Original Sin 2 Will Get Definitive Edition Treatment

Larian Studios’ hit RPG is getting overhauled and improved for its big re-release.

If you saw our Best of 2017 coverage back in December, you know that we are big fans of Larian Studios’ Divinity: Original Sin 2. The game was a masterclass in RPG combat, storytelling, and co-op fun. By the time the dust settled, Divinity: Original Sin 2 walked away with our Best RPG of 2017 and Best PC Game of 2017 awards and it wasn’t particularly close in either category. While no one would blame the folks at Larian for sitting back an enjoying the accolades, the development team kept pushing forward and working to improve the game. The fruit of their continued labor has resulted in Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition, a massive overhaul to the original game that is headed for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

While the full details of what’s been improved and changed will not be finalized until The Definitive Edition sees release later this year, the folks at Larian shared some news with the press during Judges Week at E3. The entire third chapter will be overhauled, with rewriting, rescripting, and updated characters, while the in-game journal is also getting a rewrite. The map will get placeable markers, and the new "Party Inventory" option will remove the hassle of dealing with multiple inventory screens in group situations. A new tutorial, PvP arena improvements, a new difficulty setting, and DLC, including "Sir Lorna the Squirrel," a tale of a squirrel struggling with an existential crisis, will also be making an appearance.

The first Divinity: Original Sin received the Enhanced Edition treatment back in 2015 as received lots of positive feedback from fans and new players. This will mark the first time that the RPG sequel will appear on consoles. Owners of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on PC will receive the Enhanced Edition as a free upgrade when it releases. There is no word yet if saves from the base game will be compatible with the new edition.
