The zombies gameplay mode is returning in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Craig Huston, lead writer for Black Ops 4's zombie mode, took to the stage at the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 reveal to discuss the game's new co-op undead-based experience called 9, stylized as IX. In particular, he said that the updated gameplay mode has a new story centered around an "ancient order hell bent on transforming world to fulfill a nefarious agenda." The cast members themselves appeared to be like gladiators, fighting off waves of infected enemies in a massive arena before a chained prisoner's chest erupts with a massive, gore-dripping fiend.

The team at Treyarch has revealed that this new narrative-focused Zombies mode is actually one of three that will be featured in the new game, alongside both Voyage of Despair and Blood of the Dead. The game will also be featuring a much-touted battle royale-inspired game mode called Blackout which will feature several prominent characters from past Black Ops games.

Players who pre-order the game now will get access to a special beta test to check out some of the multiplayer components that will make up but a fraction of the Black Ops 4 experience. Otherwise, players can get their hands on Treyarch's latest first-person shooter experience when Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases on October 12.
