The game is still on track for a 2018 release as it celebrates special milestones.

Stardock is still cruising along with the development of Star Control: Origins, and it's planned for launch this year. The company just announced a special milestone, in fact, in the form of Star Control: Origins Fleet Battles Beta 2, which brings several new tidbits along with it for anyone currently enjoying the beta.

There's a selection of new ships, such as the Greegrox Swarm, Lexite Interceptor, and Mu'Kay Grasper. The last one sort of sounds like a title in Dune, like Muad'Dib, but it's totally not. If you're more interested in shooting things until they explode, you'll want to know about all the new weapon components as well, such as the shield, ink blob, and death ray. It seems to me that if you have a weapon component known as the "death ray," that's a weapon all its own, but what do I know?

If you're more interested in playing with others, there are new multiplayer options as well, including custom ship creations that you can bring over to multiplayer. You can set up private lobbies, tweak your arena size, and select different maps before proceeding to blast the space bits out of each other.

If you haven't tried out the beta yet, it sounds like you may soon need to. The art style looks appropriately cartoony yet stylized, and it seems like a lot of fun. Have you tested it out? Let us know that you think!
