Netscape 6 Released
by Steve Gibson, Nov 10, 2000 4:50am PSTNetscape 6.0 has escaped onto the web. Havent grabbed it yet to find out if it works but Maarten, Andy, and myself all look forward to yet another browser from Netscape to deal with on compatibility issues. Maybe this time around they stuck to standards? You can grab the Windows , Mac, and Linux versions. I was a happy Netscape user for years, surely wouldnt mind switching back if its good.

Shugashack's main page. I'm sure you know of this error if you use NS. The bar on the right side that has the search, poll, etc. is farther left than it should be. Item #2:
http://www.somethingawful.com/wta/dropin/ns6marginproblem.gif
You will no doubt recognize this popular site. Notice at the top left in NS6, the gray link bar at the top is farther down than it should be, thus the terrorist's head blocks the links, rendering you unable to click them. Moving on...
NOTE: As I was searching for item #3, Netscape crashed with an Application Error. I had been using it for about 15 minutes since I installed it. I then restarted Netscape. Now, Item #3:
OK, wait, after typing that I visited a few more sites, and after typing in a URL in the address bar and hiting enter it crashed with the same error again. 2 crashes so far. Ok, real Item #3:
http://www.somethingawful.com/wta/dropin/ns6tacopspage.gif
This popular UT mod's menu is uglified in NS6. Not much more to coment on there. Okaay, just experienced two more crashes so far. Every time I type in an address and hit enter I pray. Things are starting to get ugly. Item #4:
http://www.somethingawful.com/wta/dropin/ns6valveworld.gif
A shot of Valveworld.com. Heh, I'm sure that isn't intentional.
Well, that wraps up my hunt. I don't really know why people argue that NS6 is compatible with all the right standards and so on. These error items listed above obviously aren't meant to be there, and they aren't in IE.
Additionally, the Profile Manager thing that Netscape makes you go through when you first run it stopped responding a grand total of two times while I used it. It was crashing before I'd even run the browser. Now, it is time to uninstall this evil and the demon AOL icon it placed on my desktop.
Grand Crash Total: 6 (including profile manager hangs)

Give a definition of a fully compliant browser and Netscape will make one, but there is no such thing as one because there are too many people (and organizations) saying you have to this and this to be compliant. There is no one set of rules to make a compliant web browser. No one has ever made a compliant web browser. So just shut the fuck up about that, ok? Being compliant will always make Netscape different than IE. The way you guys want Netscape to be compliant is to adhere to IE standards. "Uh, IE isn't as fuxored as Netscape. So I like IE better!" Guys, get a clue.
Netscape suxors!??
Oh, btw, Netscape 6(er, Mozilla 0.6 beta) has proven to be more "compliant" than IE already, so what the fuck is everyone arguing about? It sucks? Seems to be loading web pages wickedly fast to be in most cases. I'm sure Steve will fix those minor spacing issues when reading a persons comment history and that recent comments thing on the front page. Although Mozilla M18 didn't have that problem so I wonder if it's just a rendering bug? Also when using the shack poll it seems to take a while to load up the results page. Could just be a small problem on Steve's end since Netscape 6 is so new. Oh, btw Steve, is Netscape COM level 1 support good enough to throw in that dthread option into Netscape 6 now? :)
Other than that, Netscape looks pretty identical to IE in web page layout. Don't you guys agree?
Netscape 6 = beta?
The only other argument that I can think of is that AOL is releasing a beta version of Mozilla as their final version of Netscape 6. So what? The Mozilla organization doesn't think it will reach a 1.0 non-beta status until next summer, so realistically that's when you can bitch about standards support and bugginess then. Fuck AOL, I don't care what they do with their version of it. All that AOL's version adds is spam links, spam software and spam everything else. Just download the Mozilla nightlies or point releases because they're the more lean and mean version of Netscape.
The future?
The future of Mozilla looks to be very promising. Microsoft seems to be going in the direction of integrating their software (i.e. media player, instant messenger) into Internet Explorer even further to make and even more bloated web browser. With Mozilla, if someone complains about a bug that really should be fix they can take it upon themselves and fix it, then send the fix for a future release of Mozilla. You can't do that or ever will with IE. That's the beauty I see in Mozilla. It's overall potential to fix bugs much quicker than Microsoft ever could with IE. So what if it has a few annoying bugs right now? In a few months they'll be gone because someone is always trying to make Mozilla a better browser. The CONSTANT improvement is incredible, as I have seen when testing the latest builds of Mozilla. It seems like when they started over and worked on a brand new browser they really had an uphill battle to make a web browser better than IE. That's why Netscape/AOL has taken so long in getting Netscape 6 out. They ditched 100% of Netscape 4.x code. So if you're complaining about how they should have gotten this out sooner than your just not seeing the big picture of how Netscape was trying to make the best web browser they can.

"From netscape.pmlg, dveditz@netscape.com:
'Be careful. We have not announced the product yet, and typically pre-push various candidate builds just to test out the distribution ...
I recommed that *when the final bits are actually released you should* ... reinstall the real release because the fixes we've accepted in the past week have been really serious ones (security exploits and things of about that level)."

Check out this Visibone html chart - http://www.visibone.com/html/tna_1700.gif (Warning: it's 800K)
IE only crap == Purple. (eg. bgsound, marquee, and a bunch of javascript events...)
NS only crap == Green. (eg. layer, embed, spacer)
Stuff NO browser supports, but that the W3C standards body has defined == Tan.
There's even more queerness when it comes to CSS...
