Kingdom Hearts 3 Goes Retro with Classic Kingdom

Take some time away from visiting other Disney worlds to go old-school.

Kingdom Hearts has gone retro in the past. Kingdom Hearts II did have a Steamboat Willie level, after all. But it looks like Kingdom Hearts III is going "video game retro."

During Sunday's Kingdom Hearts Union X Dandelion Meeting in Anaheim, CA, Square Enix revealed a new teaser for one of Kingdom Hearts III's new batch of mini-games. This will harken back to the days of Game & Watch-style LCD games, putting an LCD Sora and Mickey in various classic Disney cartoons.

No, this doesn't look like it'll influence the greater war with the Heartless or anything, but it appears to be a fun diversion, nonetheless. Kingdom Hearts III is set to release later this year.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

There were a bunch around the time the Gameboy hit it big by the big classic toy manufacturers at the time. Often branded with kid friendly IPs. Usually they were actually considerably smaller (9 available tiles to deal with) than what we're seeing here though.

I know this because my aunt got me and my brother each one of them instead of a Gameboy one Christmas, because she couldn't afford to get us both Gameboy's and rather than just have us share she got us a TMNT themed one and I believe the other was some generic Ninja one. They got less than stellar reviews in my household.

I don't care!! This had better be the best fucking game ever with how long they are taking to release it and how many "teaser" trailers they are showing all the time.

I think it's a cute idea, but I also think they stuck a too close to accuracy at least with the single screen mini-games. At full screen it's unpleasant to watch and just like the real things it's somewhat difficult to tell what's going on in a single glance due to the extremely limited frames of position and animation.
