  • Allright, time to voice my thoughts now that I've had a bit of a chance to play 1.0...

    First, the models.
Purely aesthetically, they're pretty good. The SAS model is much better, and the new Arctic skin kicks ass. I preferred a blue shirt on the Gorilla model, but whatever. But the ANIMATIONS! These are a joke, right? No movement above the waist while running, little or no reaction to being shot, etc etc etc. They're dumb. The only positive is that they no longer flail and point their gun at the ground, which had a tendency to fool me into thinking I wouldn't be hit, while from their POV they were still shooting perfectly straight. Now it's at least consistent...

    New models grade: C

    Now the weapons.
FN Five-SeveN: I dig it. Decent 2nd round purchase after a 1st round loss. Lots of ammo, decent firing rate, acceptable damage. Something I'll be eager to pick up when playing as a T.

H&K UMP 45: Pretty good here too. Does enough damage to make up for the slow firing rate, and when bursted it's accurate enough for gov't work. Priced good.

Sigarms SG-550: A pile. It's like the G3/SG1 except it's cheaper (+), weaker (-), and louder (-). Maybe the CS developers hadn't noticed, but no one uses the G3/SG1, so why would we want a weaker/cheaper/louder version of it? It's so unrealistic too. IRL it's identical to the 552 except for the longer, heavier barrel, adjusted firing rate, and a serious scope. You should at least be able to hit the broad side of a barn while moving.

    Weapons grade: B

Now the maps, or rather revamp of cs_office:
*SOB SOB SOB* It's a CRIME I tell you! Office was *easily* the best hostage map in the default pack in 7.1. It still may be 2nd or 3rd, but that says more about the other maps than about the new office. Trust me on this. I played A LOT of 7.1 cs_office, on both teams. I had it figured out. The team that won was, factors like luck aside, the team with the most brains and best able to adapt their tactics to the other team. Most maps have a trick, be it rampant camping, stealth, speed, numbers, whatever. /But office didn't have a trick/. With fully *5* CT entrances and a maze of internal hallways, there was no single strategy, no lynchpin tactic that ruled the day. Anyway, I won't bore you with the details of my love affair with cs_office, not even the time I killed 5 terrorist (3 by myself) with the TMP, but suffice it to say that it RoXx0r3d. And the new texture set, while amusing and novel, is pretty gawdy and not at all real-looking.

    Map grade: F

Well, the average of a C, B, and an F is about a D+ (1.67). Not lookin too good there. Maybe I'm giving too much weight to the new cs_office, but really it IS the biggest change. The SG-550 will impact gameply not at all, the 5-7 a little, the UMP quite a bit. The new models are dorky but don't affect gameplay much. The remake of cs_office, OTOH, is a PROFOUND change that almost makes me want to quit. I mean, if the CS team can't identify a gem like cs_office(7.1) (and turds like cs_siege), then where is this game going?

  • Ok, just got done playing for awhile. Here's my take on v1.0

    Guns:
5-7: Glock with more power. Also seems to be the most innaccurate hand gun now. I think the Desert Eagle is less accurate, too.

UMP45: Neat gun, amazingly unique. I figured it would be worthless or a copy of one of the existing guns. Unfortunately the rate of fire is unrealistically slow. It is VERY VERY slow. Probably half the P90 and 30% less than the MP5. It seems more like a 25 round USP. It's pretty damned accurate while running around, too. Well balanced, IMHO.

Sig 550 Sniper: Completely fucking useless. It's an exact copy of the SG1, with a 30 round magazine of weaker 5.56 NATO rounds. It's completely inaccurate unless you are COMPLETELY stopped. ROF is way slow, even if you're not zoomed it just like the SG1. The Scout still beats the shit out of the SG1, and no surprise the Sig 550 Sniper sucks even worse.

New models: I think they look more realistic and less cartoonish than the old models. The running and walking animations look more realistic. There is less flailing around when shot and animations still don't blend together. Overall I like the new models and animations. At least they don't look like they're dying when the get shot in the foot with a single 9mm.

Map changes: Of the changed maps I've only played Office so far. It's way different with new walls and a new path all the way around the back of the map. The new textures look nice. I'm not sure if I like the layout yet.

BTW, that gamers.com link overviewing the map changes is retarded. It said the vent in 747 was new and it has been like that since Beta 7.

Yeah, the maps need refreshed. 747 needs to either be restored to Beta 6 state or removed. It blows in its current state. Prodigy and nuke could use a new texture set. Assault needs to be completely revamped. Siege with the APC and with less terrorist cover is getting better, but it could use one or two VERY minor changes to fix the gameplay. Lots of the maps need revision or just need to be removed in favor of new maps. But the CS team is not the brightest when it comes to map selection unforunately.

Overall I think I will like v1.0 more than previous versions. But it's still an evolutionary and not revolutionary upgrade. Might as well call it Beta 8. If it wasn't for the same old maps it would be a bigger change.
