PlanetSide Site Opens
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 08, 2000 8:49am PSTSony has opened up the official PlanetSide website which offers more details on Verant's massive multiplayer online action game (see yesterday). There's a features list, a FAQ list, a producer's letter and three new screenshots. Here's a snip from the FAQ regarding the massive multiplayer part of the game
4.1 - How is PlanetSide persistent?
The balance of power between the opposing military conglomerates will constantly shift depending on the actions of players. Since everything happens in real-time, players will find worlds changing continuously as battles are fought. Players may also advance their characters through rank and other means. 4.2 - How many players will a server hold?
A server will hold approximately 3500 players.
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker

Example: In EQ recently they implemented very high level epic quests for every player class. These are very long, difficult things that when completed give you what's basically a class defining weapon, the best in the game for your particular class. Now, obviously this had people interested and they swore up and down many times that they'd tested them in every possible way with every race/class combination and that they were airtight and working. Eventually they went live, and fully half of them didn't work. They patched up a couple here and there over the next two weeks, but as of today at least three or four (of 13) are still broken. Note that I'm not talking about some quirky bug, I'm talking that they're simply not completable at the moment.
It's been TWO MONTHS and they haven't fixed these, which they swore a dozen times were fully tested in the first place (I think the fact they had to swear this shows the customer base in general's level of faith). Not to mention the completely out of wack difficulty, one or two can be completed given a few hours and some friends, others I'm a bit skeptical are ever going to be finished.
I can hardly wait to see what happens when this sort of approach shows up with an FPS game. Wow.

A ping time of 350 in EQ is no big deal. But in an FPS a ping time that high makes the game nearly unplayable, at least competetively.

Han Soul-O griped his phaser tightly, it was warm and hard, not unlike a reheated stale bagel... You wouldn't want to eat either, but now it was Glekko the trademonger who was staring down the business end of the double barelled Onion and Chive, er... gun.
"Perhaps we can glorp a deal..." said Glekko shakily... "Take me you fool..." was Soul-O's reply... Hot, ass-thumping sex followed...
that oughta do it...

The bandwidth, hardware, and customer-service costs eat up most of that monthly fee. Without it they'd likely go broke pretty fast, unless they had heavy in-game advertising or something.
