In the brand new series players will get to make and break their own custom Gundam models.

When it comes to anything having to do with giant robots, I just can't get enough, and I have a particular place in my heart for the Gundam series. So, I was very pleased to see Bandai Namco reveal New Gundam Breaker today. According to the press release, the new IP revolves around Gunpla, which is basically Japanse slang for collecting and building plastic model Gundams. In the game, players will get a chance to customize and battle their Gunpla against enemies for new custom parts.

"For generations, GUNDAM fans in the Americas have collected, constructed, and displayed Gunpla models in their homes. Now the artistry and creativity of the Gunpla scene is coming to the video game world with NEW GUNDAM BREAKER, coming to the Americas exclusively for the PlayStation computer entertainment system in 2018."

"Featuring a multitude of different Gunpla, the game will enable players to construct their own Gunpla and take them into battle. As enemies are damaged or destroyed, they’ll leave body parts or weapons behind which players can collect and use for further customization of their own Gunpla."

The ability to switch parts and make a personalized Gundam is something I can't recall from any incarnation of the series. But, such mechanics have been an integral part of other mech combat titles such as Armored Core and definitely make sense from a genre perspective. No word on a specific release date yet, but New Gundam Breaker will be a PS4 exclusive.
