Sea of Thieves, the high seas adventure that will playable on potatoes, is going to need some rigorous testing to make sure it runs on the wide collection of PC configurations as the devs intend. The first major wave of that testing, a closed beta, is going down January 24 to January 29 and the development team has revealed the specific times that it will run.

The Sea of Thieves closed beta will run for five days, from 4 a.m. PST on January 24 to 12 a.m. PST on January 29. The experience in the beta is a bespoke creation from Rare that will serve as a taste of what the full game will offer. As far as access goes, anyone that signed up for the Sea of Thieves Insider Program before December 1 and anyone that pre-orders will be able to participate.

Good news for content creators: The closed beta is not covered by an NDA. Streaming, videos, clips, screenshots and all are fair game. Information on downloading the beta client can be found on the game's FAQ.

      I honestly can' tell if this will be any fun or not. It's interesting. But, I guess not enough for me to actively follow it.

        I'll watch it on Twitch to get a sense.

        The biggest negative I've heard so far is "You don't really... do anything" as in there were no quest systems or progression systems in there yet.

        Pretty much every voice I trust has said it's a shit ton of fun.

          NDA is lifting for the closed BETA, we will be able to share all the adventures then!
          its really a casual, team based adventure game. there is fun to be had with fun people.

        here is an example of 9 players in Star Citizen, stealing another players transport with an extraordinarily advantageous EMP ship tactic, boarding;

        Sea of thieves is WAAAAY more casual and easy to get into than this.

        I literally cannot tell you. The windows store never would install the beta, even after a reinstall. Steam was pretty bad in the early days but I don't remember not being able to install a game.

        matchmaking didn't work the time I tried the beta, so I went in alone and had no idea what I was doing. I love games not holding your hand but I was just sailing around aimlessly. I'll have to try it again with other people.
