Apologies to Danny DeVito.

Readers of Shacknews may have noticed that our staff has an affinity for the idea of an English-speaking Pikachu in a detective's hat who solves mysteries. In fact, some of us might have been on that train lobbying for Danny DeVito to don the hat and take on the role of Detective Pikachu. But as of Wednesday afternoon, the lead Detective Pikachu role appears to have been cast and while it's not DeVito, the choice is just as good.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds will be voicing the crime-solving Pikachu. He'll bring his talents to this film that's helmed by director Rob Letterman, who's no stranger to family animated comedies, with his resume that includes Monsters vs. Aliens and Shark Tale. The screenplay will be penned by Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

No further details about Detective Pikachu were revealed, but the live action/GCI hybrid film is expected to begin shooting in London in mid-January.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
