11Human Head Studios has just released a 86.5mb Rune demo for those who want to try the game before buying. No word on what's included in this demo unfortunately, not even on the official site. You can get the demo locally from the Shack, and there are mirrors at Unreal Universe, 3dfx Gamers and Fileplanet.

-- For sheer gameplay I'm reminded of Doom more than, say, the obvious Tomb Raider/Die by the Sword influences. It's still fun to slay lots and lots of baddies, and it's even cooler to do it in the gorier, up-close way.
-- Control is more than adequate. Rune does swordplay much better than the ambitious but ultimately frustrating Die by the Sword.
-- Moody atmosphere. Not just good level design -- but the storytelling elements in that design. Right off the bat, when you swim down to the sunken ship and see your friends' and father's corpses floating...wow.
-- John Romero, eat your heart out. This is what Daikatanna tried so desperately, and expensively, to do. But look: it turns out you don't need gazillions of dollars and an egotistical "designer" to make a great game. Maybe Romero should apply for a job at Human Head as an intern. ;)

I just played through the whole demo (SHORT as freakin' hell by the way!) and it ran pretty good at 1024x768 and all the details maxed out. In fact, I just installed Unreal the other day and grabbed the final patch for it and I have to say that not only does Rune look a hundred times better, it runs better too. Unreal runs like a two legged dog with my GTS. Rune doesn't haul ass like Q3 does, it hitches a little here and there but for the type of game it is, the performance is definitely good enough to be enjoyable.
As for the gameplay, if you liked Heretic 2, you'll probably like Rune. I was just starting to get into it thinking I might buy it when I came to the end of the demo. Way too short if you ask me. I didn't see enough to convince me I want to buy it but if I see it on sale I'd probably pick it up.
