AOL Is Evil
by Steve Gibson, Oct 28, 2000 2:21pm PDTSomething for you guys to look at and ponder the evilness that is AOL. According to this report on News.com the latest version of the AOL software no longer has a homepage button. (Thanks Ghost in my Shell). Basically forcing people to leave their homepage as the AOL.com website, unless they know how to of course hax0r around it. (Which most AOL users dont).
"This is an outrageous business tactic that goes to the heart of our concern about how AOL Time Warner will be a digital monopoly," said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Media Education. "AOL and Time Warner want to become the new gatekeepers of the digital age, and we have to resist that."

in a ruthless attempt to force users to their home page, AOL removes the button that takes people there. Bastards!
Like anyone will admit to it... is Ominous around? He is the only one here who will admit to sometimes using an AOL account.

how is this evil? (besides the fact that it's AOL)
this is bullshit that the media is painting this as evil (okay the shack is the media) basically, AOL is adding the option to have custom buttons on the toolbar to go wherever you want, but removing the home button that takes you to their site until you change it.
from what i hear, the internet with AOL is based on entering in a URL ANYWAYS, and you don't see the home page until you click on the home button ANYWAYS. This should REDUCE hits to the website, not increase them

they are talking about taking out the home page button from the toolbar, right?
all that does is TAKE you to the homepage. to set the homepage, you have to go to tools-options.
i don't understand how the home button can set your homepage anyways.

"What we did was we looked at the toolbar as a whole, and in that redesign, in that streamlining, we moved some things around," said Jeff Kimball, executive director at AOL. "And yes, it's not there."
and many times in the article it says the home page "button" has been removed.
I don't use the home page button anyways. From what i read the change means there is no home button in the toolbar.
the article says you can't change the homepage, but how exactly does that relate to removing the home page button from the toolbar?
