As Mortal Kombat Turns 25, Raiden Comes to Injustice 2

Whether you’ll be able to use him for free or not depends on which version of the game you’ve already purchased.

Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2’s rowdier younger brother, is celebrating 25 years of existence this month. To mark the occasion, NetherRealm Studios is releasing the familiar character Raiden as a downloadable roster addition. Some fortunate players can take advantage of the new fighter right now, and he actually appeared at an event last month.

If you have already purchased the Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition, Injustice 2 Digital Deluxe Edition, Injustice 2 Ultimate Pack, or Fighter Pack #2, you are one of the lucky ones. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until October 6, when you can purchase the Raiden DLC, which also includes a special Black Lightning Premier Skin. Black Lightning is a character with his own CW show, so he’s probably not happy about playing second fiddle to Raiden. That’s what happens when you’re new on the scene, though.

No price point has been announced for the announced DLC, but other add-on characters are currently available for $5.99 USD. Fighter Pack 2, meanwhile, is available for $19.99 USD.

Raiden was one of the characters featured in the original lineup when Mortal Kombat hit arcades in October 1992. As a powerful god who got roped into a fighting tournament, Raiden shocked and stunned his unfortunate opponents with lightning-based attacks. He was a lethal force, and has remained a popular character within the franchise ever since. His capabilities should allow him to fit right in with the assembled crew of heroes and super-villains NetherRealm Studios has assembled in Injustice 2.

Injustice 2 is currently available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Previous downloadable characters include Red Hood, Sub-Zero, Starfire, and Black Manta. Are you enjoying Injustice 2, and do you plan to demolish characters with Raiden?
