Nintendo Miiverse Closes This November

Nintendo’s proprietary version of social media will disappear from the Internet forever, but you have a chance to save fond memories to your hard drive ahead of that.

The end of an era is fast approaching. Nintendo has announced it is discontinuing the Miiverse service, effective November 8, 2017. You will no longer be able to use any related functions after that time, in games or online.

Miiverse was introduced alongside the launch of the Wii U console, and seemed likely to drive further success (since it followed closely on the heels of the wildly popular Wii console). However, consumers were slow to respond to ineffective marketing and a trickle of games, which meant the service never gained the anticipated momentum. When the Switch launched earlier this year, it did so without Miiverse support. The writing was on the wall.

Due to the service’s removal, you will eventually no longer see Miiverse posts display in WaraWara Plaza, the interface for the Wii U console that finds Mii characters gathering in clusters around icons of the latest and most played game releases. Commenting and similar features in some Wii U and 3DS games will also cease to function, and meaningful community discussions will end.

“Between now and the end of the Miiverse service, a new feature will allow you to request a downloadable version of your Miiverse post history,” Nintendo stated in its update. “This feature is intended for those who wish to save the Miiverse posts they’ve submitted and the images in their Screenshot Album to a PC.”

You can find out more information by viewing Miiverse on the Internet in your browser. You will need to have a linked Nintendo Account, and you will need to submit your request for the post history before the service ends.

“Thanks to everyone for all your contributions so far,” Nintendo added. “We hope you’ll continue to enjoy Miiverse until the end of the service!”

Have you liked being able to interact with others on the Miiverse service, or admired some of the artwork others contributed when you fired up your Wii U and decided what game to play next? If so, you might want to do that one more time ahead of early November, just for old times’ sake.
