AltspaceVR Lives! Company No Longer Closing Down

The death knell seems to have been premature as the company engages in discussions with interested parties to keep it alive.

No matter how impressive a project may be, there are going to be unfortunate casualties in the life of any industry. Virtual Reality saw one of its biggest losses happen when news hit that AltSpaceVR was shutting down in late July...but wait. Courtesy of a blog on AltSpaceVR’s website, it looks like the company is chatting with individuals or entities interested in keeping the immersive social platform alive.

AltspaceVR has apparently been receiving requests from fans of the pioneering social platform to allow them to donate in some way to keep the lights on. While those efforts are honorable and endearing, bigger fish would need to get involved to really make the needle move. This statement from AltspaceVR in the blog is all we have to go by for now:

“Thanks to that outpouring of support, we’re now deep in discussions with others who are passionate about AltspaceVR who want to guarantee that our virtual oasis stays open. We feel confident saying to our community that you don’t need to find another place to meet your friends in virtual reality. AltspaceVR is not closing down. We look forward to seeing what you’ll make next in AltspaceVR. Thank you for fostering a wonderful place for people to meet, hang out, play games, attend comedy shows, meetups, get married, and above all, laugh. If you’re one of our SDK developers and you’ve made something in AltspaceVR, please know that your work still has a vibrant home. We’re excited to continue seeing the amazing and unexpected things you all create. We are so thankful that you, our hosts, and our community have made what AltspaceVR is today — a place worth saving.”

Though it doesn’t seem that anything is signed or set in stone just yet, the company seems confident that users won’t have any gaps in activity and can continue to create with no concerns for the platform being shut down. Social VR is a huge deal for the industry and this surely will be a monumental moment that enthusiasts, consumers, and creators look back on.
