Damn! Language Could Lead To Permabans In New Rocket League Update

Rocket League is an indie success that has gone from obscure free title on PlayStation Plus to exciting esports event with a massive community that continues to grow. With such massive growth comes growing pains as developer Psyonix tries to make sure players have a positive experience playing their game. In pursuit of that, Psyonix has announced via blog post some new ban practices while also giving updates on Season 4 rewards.

Currently, Rocket League players can improve their experiences online by actively using the Mute and Report functions in-game. Now, Psyonix is adding some automated support to the report system which will clean up the gaming space with a language ban that targets over 20 words and variants of the collected words.

Each word has its own hidden threshold and, once it’s reached, bans start out at 24 hours and will escalate to 72 hours, a week, and end with a permanent ban if the behavior hasn’t changed and the player continues to be reported.

“Of the thousands of reports we receive every day, the majority are tied to in-game abuse and harassment -- typically in the form of abusive language,” says Psyonix’s Community Director Devin Connors in the blog post. “This new Language Ban system will help us address reports quickly and precisely while we also continue our usual monitoring of Reddit and other social channels for feedback.”

The blog post also included the fact that Rocket League’s community has grown to a staggering 34 million players worldwide, which is up from the 30 million reported in April, and such active attempts to cultivate a safe gaming environment with quick responses on harassment will likely breed even more growth. It’s difficult to manage the actions and words of many millions of players but they’re taking productive steps.
