The RoboMaster 2017 finals are streaming exclusively on Twitch, complete with commentary in both English and Chinese. You can watch matches from the event, which is made possible by sponsor DJI, from July 31 to August 6.

RoboMaster is billed as “one of the most advanced and entertaining robotics competitions in the world,” and this year featured more than 200 teams of aspiring robot masters. That initial number has been whittled down to 32 of the most promising, and they’re competing in the Shenzhen Bay Stadium in China.

“RoboMaster is an exciting competitive event that combines innovative engineering, gaming and entertainment,” said Cinzia Palumbo, Senior Brand Manager at DJI. “The competition started in China a few years ago and now attracts teams from the U.S., U.K., Germany, and the rest of Asia. By streaming RoboMaster 2017 on Twitch, it will enable us to reach a global audience and allow more people to realize how robotics could impact and change the world we live in.”

DJI, which produces civilian drones and aerial imaging technology, has a keen interest in raising awareness for such matters, and is a natural sponsor for the increasingly popular event. The practical side of robotics isn’t always evident and that can prevent wide adoption, but gamification could allow drones and related technology to take a step to the next level.

In RoboMaster, two teams of five robots—designated the roles of Hero, Infantry, Engineer, Drone, and Base—face off against one another in seven-minute matches. The teams advance from their respective corners of the battlefield, and the goal is to eliminate the opposition and eventually take out the opposing base. Sensors are carried on each robot, to register damage taken, and robots are disabled if they take too much virtual damage.

“The Twitch community has shown an affinity for both creative and competitive content, with RoboMaster 2017 capturing both of those elements,” said Zachary Diaz, Partnerships Manager at Twitch. “Since DJI is an extremely innovative tech company and everyone loves to see robots in action, we’re looking forward to seeing the action unfold.”

More than 20,000 attendees are expected to view the competition finals on location this year, and plenty more people are likely to watch on Twitch. RoboMaster is a yearly competition, and you can find out more about its heritage and future at the official site.
