N64 Classic Possibly Outed By Trademark Application

After an NES Classic and an SNES Classic, this probably is something to watch for.

The NES Classic was a hit with nostalgia-starved fans when Nintendo released it. Unfortunately, it was unceremoniously pulled, but only to reveal an SNES Classic a few weeks later. Now there are rumblings via a European trademark application that a Nintendo 64 Classic could be in the works as well.

Earlier this week, Nintendo filed four figurative trademark requests with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, one each for an NES controller, an SNES controller, a Switch controller, and an N64 controller (via NeoGAF). All four are registered under Goods and Services classifications covering videogame apparatus, parts and accessories.

The first three applications can be explained as expansions on the previous classics as well as a new design for the current Switch, but the N64 is the odd one out, as nothing current is available for the 21-year-old system. Given how popular the NES Classic and SNES Classics have been, an N64 version would not be out of the question, and probably a smart move for Nintendo.

Of course, this is all highly speculative, but we like to speculate. Sometimes we are right.

This time they'll produce a full dozen instead of the just the half dozen.

I'm trying to think of what games they could include on this and I'm not coming up with anywhere near the same amount they had for the SNES Classic.

Like you've got Super Mario 64, Smash Bros, Kirby 64, Zelda, Star Fox. Mario Kart... maybe a Mario Party? Would be cool if they could somehow get NFL Blitz on there too. But like what else is there? I know there has to be more that I'm not remembering.

Giving away my N64 is probably my single biggest gaming related regret. I would buy an "N64 Classic" in an instant.

There isn't a single gaming system that I've sold where I looked back on it a couple years later and thought "That was a good idea."

I wish they would announce Switch VC already, whatever form it's taking. That's honestly my #1 killer use case for the Switch if they get it right.

I don't understand why they're not just selling a Switch-related VC. Sell me a wireless N64 controller and a cart. I'd be all over that.

Because they can do that separately in 2 years time and roushimx will still buy it.

There's zero percent chance of Golden Eye, right?

It was originally published by Nintendo, developed by a publisher owned by Microsoft, and based on a property owned by Sony.

        Nope.

Wrong. The property is not owned by Sony. It has nothing to do with Sony. James Bond is owned by Danjaq who has an exclusive production and distribution partnership with MGM. MGM is partially owned by a consortium of which one member is Sony (and it's not enough to do squat). They (subsidiary Columbia Pictures) were able to score a 4 picture deal with MGM when MGM went bankrupt. MGM got to be co-financiers on a number of Columbia Pictures movies too (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was one of them). Anyway: Casino Royale, Quantum, Skyfall, Spectre. There's your 4. Columbia is now out.

All signs point to a major bidding war for the next deal (or just movie?). Supposedly Warner Bros is the front runner, but everyone else is currently in the mix too including Columbia, Universal, Disney, Paramount.. well everyone. It's Bond. That said, the video games I believe are controlled and licensed out by MGM on Danjaq's behalf? Regardless, nothing to do with Sony.

As for GoldenEye, I'm not sure Nintendo needs permission to to re-release the game (no changes) from Rare (or Microsoft). It's a Nintendo game, the problem is the Bond license. They'd have to go and get that. I don't think anyone is licensing it at the moment. Activision coughed it up like 5 years ago which is why you can't even buy the Bond games on Steam anymore - they lost it. Still, it's unlikely because of how complex the licensing issue is.

I'm happy you're still up on the current dealings of Bond.

how easily could they get 007 TWINE for n64?

Harder, because again they'd (likely) not only have to get the Bond license, but also Electronic Arts to go in on that deal. I guess if you're going in for GoldenEye, might as well get TWINE as well, just you have to get EA on board and they'll want a cut.

Please give an option to run these games at 60 fps. May as well throw 1080p and extra AA options as well. The main reason these titles haven’t aged as well is frame rate.
