Late Movie Time!
by Jack Mathews, Oct 24, 2000 7:58am PDTBetter late than never comes movie time! This week's movie was The Legend of Drunken Master. It's a Jackie Chan movie and is actually (I believe) Drunken Master 2 (released five years ago overseas). Anyway, like most Jackie Chan movies, it is really poorly dubbed, quite campy, and fun as hell. It's all about the fight scenes really, and they're excellent. I haven't had much exposure to Jackie Chan, but I enjoyed these scenes more than anything I saw in his other American theatre releases. Plus, the ancillary characters (such as his step mom and stepbrother) are actually very funny as well. The movie won't win an Oscar, but it's a really fun diversion.

Drunken Master 2 is how we Americans learn to fight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
- It was made originally in 1994 as Drunken Master 2.
- It is a remake of/sequel to Drunken Master (also a Jackie Chan movie) which was released in 1979.
- It is much better than the original ;)
- Jackie Chan was 40 years old when he made this movie (!!!).
- Ti Lung, who plays his father in DM2, is only about 8 years older than Jackie Chan.
- Anita Mui, who plays his step mother in DM2, is actually 9 years YOUNGER than Jackie Chan.
- The fight at the end of the film was originally supposed to be Jackie Chan vs. "Henry" (the guy that kicked steel-worker butt near the beginning of the movie), but "Henry" injured himself during filming and so the end fight was done between Jackie Chan and Ken Lo ("John").
- Ken Lo is a Muay Thai Kickboxing Champion, and is Jackie Chan's bodyguard in real life.
- The fight scenes in Drunken Master 2 were choreographed by Yuen Woo Ping. This is the same guy that choreographed other movies such as Fist of Legend, The Tai-Chi Master (both Jet Li films) and The Matrix. He is also choreographing upcoming movies such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh) and The Matrix 2 (Jet Li).
Semi-Facts ;)
-------------------
- Drunken Master 2 is NOT like Jackie's other recent movies. There is no jumping from helicopters, he doesn't fall down any buildings, and he doesn't jump onto moving trains on a motorcycle. DM2 is a balls-out, full-on hardcore martial arts movie, with some of the best fight scenes ever made.
- Drunken Master 2 can be considered one of the best Martial Arts films ever made, outstripping even Bruce Lee's films (although Bruce Lee could likely take Jackie in a straight fight).
- You cannot call yourself a fan of Martial Arts movies if you have not seen Drunken Master 2. ;)
I'll think of more stuff.. just wait. ;)
