Shack's Arcade Corner: Moon Patrol

Greg Burke is back with a look at the arcade classic Moon Patrol. Good luck getting this music out of your head.

This week on Shack's Arcade Corner we take a look at Moon Patrol. Released in 1982, Moon Patrol was developed by Irem and distributed in North America by Williams. Moon Patrol is widely credited for the introduction of parallax scrolling in side-scrolling video games and had an awesome sound track for its time. Players controlled a moon buggy as they traversed the surface of the moon. The moon buggy was able to fire projectiles straight ahead and up. The game had 26 checkpoints named A to Z, and your final score was based on how many enemies the player killed, how many times they died, and how long it took them to reach the checkpoint. There was also a Champion's mode that provided an endless level for high score setting arcade junkies. Moon Patrol surprisingly was never ported to NES although it did find a home on some other consoles. Check out the video to find out more awesome facts about Moon Patrol.

For whatever reason this arcade game clicked with me like few others did. Managing lateral and vertical challenges made me feel like some kind of Euclidean savant.

      I think the music helped.

I like the Arcade Corner segments, I just wish they were longer.

2-3x longer to dive a little deeper into the game, show interesting tidbits, and more gameplay. Something closer to what Lazy Game Reviews does or somewhere inbetween. What did people loved most? Encourage me to head down the rabbit hole and seek out more info about the game.

The music in Moon Partrol always makes me think of Jungle King / Jungle Hunt. You should do a video on that one. It's kind of interesting because the game was originally released as Jungle King, but the Edgar Rice Burroughs family sued because of the use of a very Tarzan-like character in the game.
