Part of the reason alot play cs is you can pick it up pretty quick, its not that tough to become a decent player. Playing a faster paced game like quake and ut, when it's your first fps multiplayer game, your gonna get your ass handed to you quite a bit before you become what would be considered decent. Therefore, alot more stick with cs than with q3, ut.

Now that's not to say one is better than the other, they are just different. You can't go by numbers though, there are a few games that spank these, evercrack, d2, etc. You have to look at the overall, in cs the person may be on the server longer but actually play less, sitting there waiting for the 2 campers to finish each other off for a half hour. Cs is also older, you can have a weak connection(56k) and a slow computer p2-266 riva128 and still be decent. With that setup you wouldn't have a prayer in q3.

in cs anyone can kill you, no matter if veteran or newbie. you're slow, you can't move when hit, you just can't do the "l33t" stuff from quake. let's say fatal1ty plays q3 vs some llama. he'll beat the llama about every time. in cs, it may happen the llama shoots him, just because he's sniping from behind the right corner.

I think it's worth pointing out that the Q3 stats contain about 400 bots. The UT stats contain 0 bots -- the UT server query code specifically doesn't report bots. The Q3 code does. I wrote a script that searches for bot names (okay, so there might be a few "Visor"'s around that are humans too), and it found about 500.

Reasons CS is dominating? Tons of HL copies sold + Realistic weapons and situations (well more real than rocket-jumping at least) + Team Play + reasonable HPB play.

I see lots of people complaining about waiting around for the last 2 players to finish up. IMHO, it's not that bad. Most servers play a 3 min time limit so usually AT MOST you wait 90 seconds for time to run out. On the other hand, being the last person on your team is a huge rush. It's up to YOU to dodge 3 enemies, find the bomb, plant it and guard it. Feels good to win like that. That aspect alone makes me forget about the odd camper dicking away in a corner. It's also easy to get them to move sometimes by initiating a vote to boot them... a few votes is all it takes to get someone off their ass.

What's funny about those Q3 numbers is that there were over 500 "Sarges" among those 4,521 players.

crt needs to release some new official RA3 maps. I'm getting bored of the current 7 (except for RA3 Map1 and RA3 Map4 - I could play those forever and ever and ever)

if someone can give me a fairly accurate way to measure # of players for everquest / starcraft / diablo etc ill include them next time around.

i think actually i remember those stats showing up in diablo2 when you join battle.net hrmph. i guess i just need a way to measure EQ / Asherons / UO

Most of the people crying about CS are the guys that are pissed off at valve for not making it as easy to assrape hpbs. CS is a damn good mod. I play way more Q3 but you have to be a retard or really close minded not to see the merits of CS.

i think that whatever the most popular game is at any given time is the game that is most likely to have the most assholes. When q2 was the most popular game around you can bet that there were plenty of dicks playing and ruining the fun for others. Now if you jump onto a q2 server, the only people left playing it are the hardcore folks who genuinely love the game. So of course they're not gonna be dicks, for the most part.

I played CS for about a month or so, I gave it a good run. I tried REAL HARD to like it, but I just couldn't.

every other game i'd join; it'd go down to two people on each team and take 10 minutes. Sometimes, more often than not, a few people would just ruin the game. Seperate teams and not kill each other, ever.

From what I saw, CS looks to be a cesspool of idiots. I mean, a breeding ground. Mass spawning. A circus. Canada.

Does the Q3 number filter out bots?

Even the pro "Anything Quake" pages (shack, stomped) have stepped away from their Carmack shrines to give CS it's well deserved props. Better late then never I guess.

Also I would love be a fly on the wall of any fps developers office when they see those numbers. When they are trying to figure out what they are doing wrong.
