The Pentium4 Savior

Uhoh.. putting Intel under the microscope again. We all know that the P3 is having issues and that whole poop storm that has been hanging around the Intel offices for a while. Well Intel is placing their bets on the Pentium4 delivering them from their sins. (Also check out this article on AcesHardware, a design decisions piece which is pretty informative) They are gonna put out 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz chips supposedly next month, and 1.7GHz chips in the beginning of next year.

... and, by the second quarter, Pentium 4s approaching 2GHz. If Intel stays on track with its current plans, Pentium 4 will exceed 2GHz by the second half of next year.
Of course, Intel still has that whole Rambus mistake to deal with. Doh. All that aside, the only thing that really matters is if it is fast, and doesnt cost stupid amounts to own.

  • Much to intels chagrin, amd is going to be neck and neck with them for the long haul. The only real advantage the P4 has over the P3 is that its far more scaleable and can ramp to higher frequencies. Clock for clock its basically equivalent to the current P3. Intel will probably have a marginal (MARGINAL) performance lead when the P4 is intro'd sometime next month. Wont last long though. AMD's next chip (Mustang) will have enough architecural enhancements to put it back on level ground again and will also ramp to higher frequencies.
