Xbox Scorpio Gives Developers An Extra 1GB of RAM

Microsoft intends to continue tweaking Scorpio so developers can put out the 'best versions of their games.'

Ahead of Microsoft's E3 press conference scheduled for this Sunday, Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra announced that Xbox Scorpio will "unlock" an additional 1GB of DDR5 RAM to work with, for a total of 9GB of DDR5 RAM (via Polygon).

"We'll keep tuning Scorpio to empower creators to share the best versions of their games. Unlocked extra GB of RAM for them, now 9GB of GDDR5," Ybarra said on Twitter. The additional gigabyte of memory is necessary for running applications in 4K resolution.

Microsoft revealed the Scorpio console's hardware specs in April. The beefed-up Xbox One console has 12GB of system memory total; thanks to the extra gig, developers will be able to utilize 9GB for their applications. The 3GB left over will go toward system functions such as displaying the Xbox Dashboard in 4K.

Bear in mind that "Project Scorpio" is still the console's working name. Microsoft is expected to announce a proper name during its E3 press event, scheduled for this Sunday, June 11, at 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern. Even if the name doesn't end up being Scorpio, the letter "S" seems to factor prominently into the final branding. Earlier this week, Microsoft registered a trademark for an "S" with a break in the middle (via The Verge). You can view the logo below.

The trademark filing is related to " Video game consoles for use with an external display screen or monitor; video game interactive remote control units" and "Computer game software for use with personal computers and video game consoles."
