Late.. nothing cool, blame a certain turd burglar for keeping me out past my bed time.

SIN Demo2 Patch [11:45am]
The Patch to upgrade the original SiN demo to the Son of the SiN demo has just been released. FTP.RITUAL.COM Also, Matt Worch sent out this email mentioning a work around with the patch for people who have changed the default .cfg files:

unfortunatly activision made a patch that requires ALL original files to be in their original state, otherwise the patch won't work at all. a lot of ppl add their own stuff to the autoexec.cfg, of course, so the whole (11MB) patch won't be applied because of that one stupid little file :(

Download http://www.ritualistic.com/files/cfgs.zip, copy all files into the BASE directory before you patch and try again. we hope that fixes the problems.

Daikatana2 Engine [11:45am]
To follow up on the quote posted yesterday, Planet Unreal asked John Romero about the Unreal engine and Daikatana.

PU: Everyone thought you guys were using the Unreal engine last time I checked. What's the poop?
Romero: Right now, we are not committed to any tech for DK2 until we actually start development next year

Requiem Delayed [11:45am]
Word from Hell on Earth is that Requiem: Avenging Angle has been delayed till 1st Quarter of 1999 now

3D Future [11:45am]
PCMagazine has posted an interesting look at our "3D Future" that you knobs might wanna check out:

As the situation was about to get uglier with the advent of the third-generation 3-D chips, Microsoft overhauled the transform and lighting APIs in DirectX 6 to enhance the efficiency of the geometry processing and balance the system architecture. DirectX 6 gave rise to significantly faster 3-D performance in the two cards we tested, and it exposed the disparity in the accelerators' relative performance that had been masked by DirectX 5. With the new Direct3D API in DirectX 6, the onus is now back on the 3-D chips to push the performance envelope outward.

EverQuest [11:45am]
Not exactly 3D Action, but you puds better be excited about this game anyways. The 3D multiplayer RPG is perhaps one of the least exploited genres in gaming today, but there is one major player due out soon in the form of EverQuest. PC.IGN published a preview yesterday.

First off, the game just looks good. EverQuest has full 3D support, complete with cool lighting effects, smooth animation, and characters that actually move and fight. Multiple views are also supported, so you never have the problem of getting attacked from behind by an unknown foe. Special effects, like spells, lightening flashes, and water motion are also handle beautifully

Daikatana 2 [7:45pm]
Contrary to popular belief, it looks like Daikatana2 will not be using the Unreal engine technology. Here is a quote from Rob Legg of Ion Storm on PlanetUnreal

"We will be doing a sequel to Daikatana sometime in the future," reveals Legg. "But the timeline for that is undetermined at this point. As far as research and development is concerned, we're developing our own 3D game engine right now."

Max Payne [7:45pm]
The Max Payne website has a new update describing the teams recent ECTS trip along with some pictures posted of their visit to the show.

Updated the News Links with more Max Payne coverage links.
Updated the News Page with a few Max Payne/Remedy happenings.
Added a Press Release about Remedy's new Max-FX™ Technology.

Duke4 [6:05pm]
Scott Miller is expressing the same vibe that I got from George B earlier this week. The boys at 3DR are pretty damn confident about Duke4ever. Check out what Scott has to say in a recent Top Secret Games interview

... What will Duke Nukem Forever have that will highten its standards over Duke Nukem 3d and set a new standard for the new age of 3d action games?

Scott: If I told you and you printed it, then Valve, Id, Ion Storm, Epic and Ritual would all realize how hopeless their situation is! Really, though, we have a handful of groundbreaking ideas in DNF that will set the new high bar for future FPSs to jump over. I've played the OEM version of Valve's Half-Life, and it's the only non-3D Realms 3D action game I've seen that even comes close to some of the coolness we're putting into Duke.

Vigilance Demo [2:15pm]
A bit earlier than expected. (Last I heard, the demo wasnt coming out until the 30th) GameCenter has scored the big exclusive Vigilance demo for download.

It's a terrorist world and Vigilance is the answer. SegaSoft's latest first-person shooter will be ready to ship in November, but you can try it out now with Gamecenter's exclusive demo premiere!

Vigilance takes place at the end of the millennium when the world is plagued by terrorism. To deal with this ever-increasing problem, a multinational force is assembled by S.I.O.N. (Special Intelligence Operations Network). The team is made up of eight operatives, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. In the full retail version, you'll choose to play one character, with names like Duchess, Fury, Bluto, and Bishop; you'll also select a specialty, such as biomechanical engineering or computer programming.

NT4 Service Pack 4 [1:55pm]
The details of this release are a bit odd, I'm guessing MS released it a bit earlier than planned. At any rate you can snag a Microsoft Windows NT4 Service Pack 4 dated 7/30/98 from the MS FTP here SP4i386.EXE. There was another version on the MS FTP yesterday that got yanked though. Download and install at your own risk. I've gotten a number of emails about this saying it may hose your system or it may make your day. Here's a good explanation though:

That SP4 was released in July. You may want to caution people about it - SP4 is currently in "release candidate" mode, and there should be a final version out relatively soon - but this current version is unsupported and has had alot of fixes made to it..

Half-Life [11:15am]
I'm sure this isnt the last one, but check out AVault's look at Half-Life: Day One and what they think of the demo.

These AI-controlled characters are, in a word, amazing. The concept may not be new (Jedi Knight had it's civilians and Blood had its "innocents"), but never before has a 3D game offered such living, believable secondary characters. Talk to a guard, and he may offer to follow you and lend a hand. Approach a scientist, and he may inject you with life-saving drugs. Most impressive, though, is the way these characters interact with one another.

Also check out this interview with Marc Laidlaw, the story writer for Half-Life.

Lara's Boobs [11:15am]
This is pretty important stuff to me. (I dont get out much) CGO has posted this little comparison article taking a look at the before and after shots from Tomb Raider 2 & 3 comparing poly counts on Lara Croft's breastages. Her cleavage has reduced, and so has my love for Eidos. :( Also, yes there are a few retards out there who find it hard to grasp the concept of sarcasm and exaggeration. Blow me.

Requiem [11:15am]
PC.IGN has posted a great look at Requiem: Avenging Angel that you knobs should have a gander at:

Requiem: Avenging Angels is a first-person shooter aimed squarely at the Quakes and Unreals of the world. But a few key points distinguish it from the many, many other games in this category: the use of adventure elements, including dialogue; the subject and storyline, which is decidedly Biblical; and the fact that Requiem, unlike a lot of other titles, actually uses its own 3D engine, developed in-house at Cyclone Studios, as opposed to being licensed from id or Epic. Horror and consternation!

Thursday Quake League [11:15am]
A changing of the guard has taken place with the Thursday Night Quake League being handed over to SS-Grunt.

TEQ will pick up exactly where TNQL left off, and continue play starting this thursday (tomorrow).  However, i have "reset" all of the standings, and this will be considered week 1 of TEQ.  The TEQ webpage is located at http://www.silver-surfers.com/teq

SIN Demo & Patch Today [12:25pm]s
Just got word from Phoebus that Ritual and Activision are hard at work to try and get the long awaited SIN demo and patch released some time this evening. Here are a few of the details he got to me through Sean Dunn:

2 Releases. Full New Demo, and a patch that is approx 1/3rd the size.
2 New DM maps. Spry from Levelord, and SinDM9 from Pat Hook aka Sabian
Today they are hoping to finish up work on 16bit software renderer, A3D support, and a couple of other enhancements.

I'm assuming Activision and Ritual realized the huge folly in packaging SinCity for a net demo and the new maps will be a bit more net friendly. If everything goes according to plans we can get our grubby little hands on the new demo before the day finishes. Here is the official line from Activision:

The Sin demo re-release is currently in the hands of the QA dept. here at Activision. Hoping to code release it today, Ritual's working on fixing bugs, getting 16 bit software and A3D sound support in there. There are two new DM levels: Spry (by Levelord), which is the one you may have heard about where you're really small in comparison to your surroundings, and the more traditional Q2 styled SinDM9 (by Pat Hook). Hopefully (no promises, though!) later this afternoon, we'll be able to release both the full demo for those who haven't downloaded it yet, and a patch to the original Sin demo, which will be roughly 1/3 the size of the full download. Stay tuned . . http://www.activision.com/games/sin/

Linkage [10:55am]
The weekly links have been posted, couple of good ones this week that should entertain you folks for a bit.

Heretic2 [9:15am]
Jake Simpson updated his .plan file with some chat about multiplayer stuff in Heretic2 which is good to see.

We are having Internet Gaming Zone support in Heretic II, as well as GameSpy support too. Its confirmed that we are going to be adding custom skin support as a later patch, as reported before. That doesn't stop you making your own skins to replace those in the game (there will be 16 skins currently), just that everyone you play won't have them. We will be supporting Co-op play, but we are still undecided as to team play in deathmatch. It all depends on what happens in the next few weeks, and how easy the Co-op stuff goes in. If we don't get it in for release, then dependant on consumer demand, it'll come in a patch too.

Engine Showdown [9:15am]
Gamecenter has just published their "mega-feature" on 3D game engines. Hold on to your hats, this article is large and in charge. Now go see the whole article right here.

Quake II vs. Unreal: The war cries still echo through the online community as 3D gaming fans continue to debate which fragfest is the best looking, boasts the baddest goons and the raddest levels, or is generally the most fun. Even executives have jumped into the fray as the same shouts are heard in company boardrooms throughout the game industry. In the realm of gaming, 3D shooters are more than just another genre; millions of dollars are at stake.

As always, GameCenter misses the boat and forgets a number of engines again. I think last time they forgot the RBR tech but included the Messiah tech. This time its the other way around. Oh, my favorite quote though pointed out by Robert:

Now, however, after a number of significant personnel defections, the cancellation of Quake III

Quake3 Discussion [9:15am]
Wow, you guys are going nuts on the Quake3 messageboard. I've spend a good 30mins reading through some of the messages and its reallly interesting to see what people would like to see in Q3. Stuff that the majority seems to agree on:
- Bring back the shaft!
- Keep the Railgun!
- Include a ClanRing / QWRING mod
- Better spectating
You can read the stuff much faster through a news reader if you are so blessed with news://news.3dchat.net/ s

The RRedline is an awesome chip. Unless we have royally screwed something up that has not shown up in testing yet, the RRedline should smoke a TNT, and will even best two SLI'ed 12 MB Voodoo 2's at most games. Yes, it really will be that good.

So well, I jumped on the USB mouse bandwagon finally yesterday. It's no joke the *huge* difference a USB mouse makes. Aside from Windows smoothness, what you guys should care about is game performance. Well, my settings before USB:
Sensitivity 6.5 + m_filter 1
After USB:
Sensitivity 4.5 + m_filter 0

Yea, the mouse is so smooth and sampled so much faster that I actually have to drop my sensitivity. The mouse was quite noticeable in Quake1, but where it really showed an improvement was Quake2. I would gamble to say the new mouse probably improved my Railgun accuracy by a good 10%. It's a MS Intellipoint for Windows98 btw.

SouthPark The Game!? [11:49am]
Well, we all remember the Q2 TC and a few other attempts at making a game based on the SouthPark "universe" right? Well check out the preview posted on IGN64 giving details of a project in progress:

Six episode-based one-player adventures that makes players feel like they're really in South Park episodes.
- Five multiplayer modes featuring Capture the Flag, a Grudge Match, and Kick the Baby!
- Hundreds of hilarious soundbytes created specifically for the game (using Acclaim's advanced voice compression also heard in Turok 2)
- 3D polygonal graphics

- Play as Kyle, Stan, Cartman, or Kenny in the one-player mode.
- Choose from more characters in the multiplayer modes.

Billy Z has gone buck wild with that incredible 3D engine which I've gotten to check out a couple of times since RBR is right here in Dallas. You guys will go nuts when you see how many polys this engine can push.

Where Are Lara's Boobs? [10:39am]
The Adrenaline Vault has grabbed some screenshots from Eidos' Tomb Raider 3. As evidenced by this shot, Lara is now a B-cup, which should make you fem-libbers happy. Heretic2 [10:39am]
GameSpot has posted a bit of a goofy interview with the main character of Heretic2, Corvus. There is a bit of interesting information about the Raven title in there though so its worth a read.

Max Payne! [10:39am]
Next-Gen interviews Sam Lake and some others of the Remedy action team for Max Payne. Check out the interview right over here:

What features does Max Payne possess over other competitors in the third-person action genre? Who are the game's main competitors?
Petri Jarvilehto - "The main competition that we're up against is naturally other third person action games. I don't think we actually compete against Tomb Raider though, as those games are much more puzzle and jumping oriented, whereas Max Payne is focusing on action and storyline.
"The features that set Max Payne apart are the stylistic combat, it really looks and feels like a movie, slow-motion as a game-play element, strong character that stands above the crowd and last but not least a proper storyline to give context and meaning to the action."

Rainbow6 [10:39am]
Fresh3D has whipped up their review of Rainbow 6. The review features some great screenshots of this shoot em' up hostage taking game. They also have whipped up some Screenshots, actually not some (A whole lotta)... 56 of them rip em up blow your freakin mind out screenshots. They have also reposted their interview with Carl Schnurr, the Rainbow 6 producer. Last but not least, they are holding a Rainbow 6 Contest to give away several copies of the game.

SHOGO [12:55pm]
Gamers Alliance has put together what should hopefully be all you need to convince you to go buy Monolith's SHOGO: Mobile Armor title which should be on shelves around now.

The levels and basically the entire graphics and visuals are all of very high standards. The LithTech engine is as good as we were all made to believe. The result is a super clean image, with nice colors and 3D effects. Monolith have given a lot of thought and work into the levels, which are all beautifully rendered. The characters themselves are very nicely designed, and even look good when you come up real close to them.

Klingon Honor Guard [8:25am]
GamesDomain has put together a new preview of Klingon Honor Guard based on the Unreal technology. Hopefully we'll be seeing this title soon. Which one you think first, the Unreal patch of KHG? -VE

Klingon Honour Guard is a 3D shoot-em-up which uses the Unreal 3D engine licensed from Epic Megagames, although instead of killing Skaarj, the baddies in Unreal, you'll be blowing away scorpions, strange dogs, giant fish, Andorians and even Klingons, who happen to be working for a rebel Klingon house and who aren't generally too happy with you wandering around their territory

Quake3 Wish List [10:25am]

Also, it's no secret that we are developing future versions of Voodoo Banshee. Voodoo Banshee is meant to be a family of products.  As a part of that future family, you will see faster processors (higher clock). The dual TMU thing is really a question.

It's technically possible to add a second TMU, but we want to keep Voodoo Banshee a single chip product.  The dual TMU approach is really what Voodoo2 is all about.

3dfx vs nVidia [5:05pm]

3Dfx Interactive(R), Inc. The suit follows repeated attempts by 3dfx to reach a mutually acceptable solution with NVIDIA.

There are no details about Q3 in the interview but if you wanna read what Paul thinks of online gaming take a look.

HL OEM Stuff [2:05pm]
Yea, there is some Russian page that you could DL the OEM version of HL from for a while. They obviously didnt see those huge warez banners all over the files and just posted it oh so innocently. Here is an email BillyW over at VE traded with Harry Teasley from Valve:

Billy: Will the OEM version be released on the internet?  If not, will we see a demo version of Half-Life (other than the OEM version)?

Harry: The OEM is 250mb, so downloading it would be too much for most.
Chopping bits away is tough: there's a lot of content in the game, and you can't get a good feel for it without a bit of the game to experiment with, if you follow what I'm saying.  We're considering the possibility of looking into a releasable demo, but only after the full version ships.

Q3 Shots Yanked [1:45am]

System Shock 2 [11:35am]
Prophet's News has gotten a hold of some new details of System Shock2 which you folks should find interesting.

System Shock 2 utilizes an enhanced version of Looking Glass Studios' proprietary Dark Engine, which is being used in Thief: The Dark Project, to create an immersive role-playing world rendered in 16-bit color with colored and dynamic lighting models. The game will also contain advanced role playing features including character generation and growth, an elegant inventory system, a science fiction world to explore and a unique multiplayer mode.

Prince of Persia3D [6:45am]
You guys should dig on this. Check out the new preview AVault has put together of Prince of Persia3D

There had been discussions for some time among those who participated in designing the original Prince of Persia games about taking the story into a 3D world, but, as the game's producer Andrew Pedersen notes, "For a long time the technology was pretty limiting and we didn't feel that we could make the kind of product that would be a worthy sequel." With the recent increases in the speed of personal computers and the crucial spread of 3D hardware video acceleration, he decided a team could finally "do a real kick ass game with big levels and real-looking characters while maintaining a high frame rate."

Klingon Honor Guard [12:35pm]
The boys at PlanetUnreal have put together a good preview of Klingon Honor Guard, what looks to be the first game that wil be hittin the shelves based on the Unreal engine technology. (Aside from Unreal, of course)

Klingon Honor Guard is Microprose's first attempt in the first person shooter genre. By the looks of it, they are destined to do well. KHG is the first of many Unreal engine based games to be released. Is KHG an Unreal clone with a bunch of Klingons running around instead of Skaarj?

The answer to that is a resounding no. KHG uses many new innovations that games like SiN and Half-life will boast. One of the more exciting features is the blood spray effect. When you slash someone with your bat'telh ("betleH") the blood spray will fly and stain almost anything. Another is the damage sign. If you shoot a rocket and hit an object, it will leave a scorch mark. This goes for many of the other weapons as well. Weapons… Ah yes, the weapons in KHG are among the finest to be had in a game. Especially the bat'telh… which translates into "sword of honor."

Quake3 Article [12:35pm]
If you are looking for a little bit of rehashing on the decision by id Software for the direction they are taking Quake3, check out this CGO article which has a few old quotes from Carmack describing the logic behind the decision and a few of their expectations. SHOGO [12:35pm]
Jose at PowerVR Generations recently got some questions answered via email by Monolith's John Jack, on graphics options that will be available in Shogo. Here's an excerpt:

Q : Texture size - Currently the "dominant" boards , so to speak, are those equipped with 3Dfx chipsets. However they support a maximum of 256x256 texture size while practically the rest of competition supports a higher size. Will we be seeing textures of , lets say, 1024x1024 in Shogo ?
A : We chose to stick with 256x256 maps in Shogo because of the above reason. Future titles after Blood2 may support higher res textures.
