Talon Brave Pic

Looks like we finally get a look at what Talon Brave may look like, main character of 3DR's Prey game. Keep in mind this is just a "proof of concept" piece of art and may not be the final character.

3dfx Glide Drivers

The new Glide and Direct3D drivers for 3dfx cards have been released over at the 3dfx homepage.Direct3D drivers are version 2.13 (Go along with DirectXv5.0) and the Glide ones are version 2.42. Also, there is a new GLQuake driver as well. From what I understand these drivers take advantage of the 4mb texture memory of the newer cards coming out (Canopus 3D, etc.) Redw00d's page says he has heard a 1-3fps improvement for GLQuake. werd to VooDoo Extreme for the news.

Turok Preview

The coolest looking game on the N64 (ok, it was, until GoldenEye came out) has made it's way to the PC. Check out the preview over aon PCGames. werd to Prophet.

Level Designers

If you are still struggling at home trying to make that great kickass level and score yourself a job at a game company, check out this AVault article that talks about "getting into the industry"

Zerstorer

Well, this is it.. what probably is the most anticipated free Quake add-on pack soon to be released. Zerstorer is in the finishing stages of testing and will hopefully be released quite soon. Check out the update to the homepage, apparently they already have the QuakeWorld port ready, and everything looks "rock solid"

Speaking of Zer..

A former member of the Zerstorer team, Brandon "KillMe" James who went on to get hired by id Software, has done an interview over at the Quake Workshop.

Couple More.

Ok, got 2 more interviews for you guys to read while we are at it, dig em:

Rocket Arena Tourney

Warzone is organizing a tournament for the Rocket Arena patch. I had a chance to check it out last night and it's pretty damn fun. Hung out at the Inferno server, got my but kicked a bit until I figured out I was supposed to shoot back. :)

Quake2 Characters

Redw00d's page has screenshots of an assload of the Quake2 characters to be included in the game. The newest one is uh, Flipper.. it's a fish or something, but freaked out beyond belief. The gunner dude is still the coolest though.

BSP and Hexen2

The boys over at www.hexen2.com have some info about the .map file editor, BSP working with Hexen2. Too bad I can't get there right now to find out just exactly what right now.

New Glide for 3dfx

Saw this over on VooDoo Extreme, an email to the webmaster there:

Dear Billy, Thought I'd let u know that there will be a new Glide Runtime driver from 3Dfx tomorrow,Sept 13.It'll be Glide Runtime drivers v2.41 plus DirectX 5.0 compatible.Looks like 3Dfx's server's gonna be busy.It'd be a good idea to post this at your site ASAP.

Trinity

There is a small blurb talking about the size of levels in the next-gen game, Trinity over at the planetquake site. Thanks Billy.

Quake2 FAQ

Slipgate over at www.quake2.com has posted a new updated version of the Quake2 FAQ. This one of course includes all of the latest info gathered about Quake2 that was uh, not included in the last version because it was stuff we didnt know yet.

Verite' for Hexen2

Rick Johnson of Raven Software, developers of Hexen2, updated his .plan with a state of the Verite' address.

FYI, the full version does have a very rare network bug that makes some entities disappear in your current area. I've already found and corrected the problem, so this will be fixed once the patch is released.

The patch will also probably include random class selection for DM games.

There hasn't been any discussion on when utilities will be released, but probably not long after the patch and an OEM version is completed.

Work is being done by Stefan at Rendidion for a Verite port. I should be getting an alpha version soon. I don't know when this will be made available to the public.

Cards based on the Vertie included Creative Labs 3DBlaster, and a few others. Don't worry about this if you have a 3dfx card.

CTF Expansion Pack

Version 1.4 of the CTF Expansion Pack is released. Check out the homepage and grab your copy. A couple of new runes have been added, and there are instructions on how to upgrade from a v1.2 client.

Half-Life

Coldsun of Ranger's Clan fame has started his own Half-Life page in anticipation of Valve Software's first release. He has made up some groovy desktop wallpaper for different screen resolutions that you may have.

Unreal Box Art

In an amazing turn of events, it seems that every 3d action game coming out within the next year will be packaged in a box. EliteTech has gotten a hold of one of these so called "boxes" that may be the retail version of Unreal. Check out the page and you be the judge.

DA PAK

I just got this email from headshot, the guy who made QCON1, the very successful DM map used during QuakeCon 97 for the tournament:

I write to introduce our soon to be released project called DA PAK. After the QuakeCon 97 Dan 'Danimal' Proietti and I (Dan made qcon2, I made qcon1) started to work on a Deathmatch level pack. It will feature 9 custom base style DM levels as well as some nifty server mods. Copy, maintainer of the Levelab recently joined the team and will contribiute a map to DA PAK as well. SpaceOrb Help

Birdman's Quakelair has some new config files for users of the SpaceOrb 360. Here is a quote from his page:

Changed a few settings in my birdscfg.zip, and set it up to work well with Hexen II also (instructions included).  These few files will work with ALL the Quake32 engine games: WinQuake, QuakeWorld, GLQuake, GLQuakeWorld, Hexen II, GLHexen II (not DOS or VQuake) I got rid of the need to have 2 different cfg files for horizontal/vertical,  so now you can just change the orientation setting from within the Customizer. Got rid of some other unnecessary stuff and took out all the button bindings except jump & fire since things are different between Quake and Hexen II. I uploaded a text file with the Hexen II bindings in it if you need it. Hold down 'shift' and click Hexen II Bindings to download.

To make it easier for everyone to know when there are changes to my cfg, I added a version # to the filename. This new version has been named birdscfg_100.zip. Included this # if you ever email me with problems.

The Frag

.plan Wagon

Kevin Cloud of id Software has updated his .plan about the qtest2 demo speculation going around recently:

I've been reading on the net that the Quake 2 demo will be released in four to six weeks. This is pure speculation.

I want to release a Quake 2 demo. It is uncertain whether the demo will be just a Qtest-like tech demo or a full featured demo. We have certain internal expectations for getting it completed. However, it will be done when it is done. I don't want to raise people's expectations for no reason. Please don't expect a demo in four to six weeks.

Over the last few weeks I've seen a ton of Quake 2 screen shots on the web. Six screens from here, and ten from there have all add up to complete over saturation. It was not my intention to blanket the web with screen shots.

In order to limit distractions, we scheduled a number of magazine visits during the same week. During this period I did not keep a close enough watch on the content of the screen shots or the amount they took. Besides some of the shots being completely boring, many of them are of unfinished areas, or areas that will never make it in the game. This is not the fault of the magazines. Rather I dropped the ball in not properly controlling the release of new screen shots. I apologize for this mistake. In the future I will try not to let it happen again.

I'll be on Quakecast tonight. I don't know what all will be discussed. I am sure the guys there will make it interesting for everyone.

Randy Pitchford Interview

After all the hooplah talking about Shadow Warrior and racism, I got a hold of Randy Pitchford (aka: DuvalMagic), one of the level designers for Shadow Warrior. He left 3D Realms after the project was complete though, unhappy with his situation at 3DR. Randy has a lot of interesting info talking about his times at 3D Realms and some funny stuff as well, here is a sample, click here to read the full thing.

>As a key developer on Shadow Warrior, what do you think about the racism issue that seems to be getting so much attention?

Yeah, well, it was unfortunate, but expected. Norwood's original concept for the game was to be an accurate ancient ninja style romp. Most of us (developers) made a strong effort to educate ourselves about Japanese culture, language and architecture. Something strange happened near the end, though. George learned from Duke3d that offensive content sparks controversy. With Duke it was sexism, with Shadow Warrior it's racism.  I'd have to confirm that most of what people are calling "offensive" in Shadow Warrior was either intentional or due to ignorance. I remember when Broussard came into the development office one day and announced that the main character would be named "Lo Wang." I nearly fell out of my chair when Keith Schuller popped his head out from behind his cubicle and said, "George, you do realize that Wang is a Chinese name and not Japanese?" George said something like, "Really? Oh well..." About two weeks later after the name was posted on the web page with a few .wavs of Lo Wang speaking we got our first hate mail about the game. George made copies of it and proudly passed it around the office. Truth be told, I did have a few laughs over much of the Lo Wang speech. I even wrote a bunch of them.  But, I knew then and know now that Shadow Warrior rode the line of tastefullness. I probably wouldn't have gone over the top if it was up to me. Now, as an owner of RebelBoatRocker, I can have more influence over content. We don't want to piss people off, we want to provide fun.

Big Quake2 Preview

Thanks to Phillip Pi, aka ant for the word that PCGames.com has posted their own Quake2 preview with a few screenshots I havent seen before. There are quotes from a few of the guys at id and other goodies as well.

Prey Shots

The boys over at VooDoo Extreme have done it again, this time it's a couple of new screenshots of Prey. Well, for those of you who doubted colored lighting's existence, these shots will prove you otherwise for sure. heh.

More Prey

After you check out those pair of shots, head over to Eidolon Gamer's Society and take a gander at their preview of Prey.  More shots there as well.

AFT Demos

The demos of the AFT are now available at the ClanRing pages. Several of the demos were lost though due to some goof ups at the tournament, Here is the zip file of what they do have though.

Radiosity Light Explanation

John Carmack, lead programmer over at id Software took the time to explain exactly how the new lighting model to be used in Quake2 works. It's uh, called radiosity and stuff. Head over to www.quake2.com and have a read.

Rocket Arena Stuff

The progs.dat for rocket arena, a patch that is for the 1on1 melee fighting purist has been released. It is taking the QuakeWorld server by storm so be sure and check it out. Hell even Disruptor put up a Rocket Arena server now, check out his .plan update:

I tried out the rocket arena patch for QuakeWorld the other day. Very cool! So cool in fact, I've put up a server here at id.

AFT Pics

There are some pics now posted over at www.threedgraphics.com/aftpix/ for everyone to check out. AFT is of course the All Female Tournament that was held in California a little while ago. Walla from Clan 311. (The same clan that Kornelia is from, the winner of AFT) shot some video and made these pics.

Fantasy Quake on AVault

For everyone who is just too much of a wuss to download this cool patch. (It is rather large, a mild commitment to download this thing if you are on a 28.8 modem) AVault has done a preview of this very cool patch. -Prophet

QuakeWorld v2.10 and Jack

Jack Mathews, who has recently been hired by the coolest 3d hardware company in the world updated his .plan file to break the news that he can no longer work on the QuakeWorld project. He will continue to work on the Qspy project though, which is a good thing. Oh, and also some choice words for AOL. heh.

I was bored, so I went through all my unread email for the past few  weeks, and I noticed a very disturbing trend that I need to mention now.

Get off of AOL. Don't walk. Run.

AOL is probably the absolute worst network of all time to be  connected to. If your Quake gameplay sucks, and you are on AOL, it  doesn't matter if you have a 56k modem or not, the gameplay WILL  blow.

Well, this is pretty big news I suppose. QuakeWorld 2.10 will be the last release of QuakeWorld that I will be involved in. Before you guys start up all the silly conspiracy theorys, there are basically a few reasons for this. One would be my employment at 3dfx. I don't want id in the awkward position of having to say "we're unbiased, but ummmm, don't pay attention to Jack over there." Or "NO! Jack is NOT doing a GLIDE port of Quake! Sheesh!" Plus, working in the porting group means that I will be working on a multitude of games, which will be just fine for me :) Lastly, honestly, QuakeWorld is pretty much at the end of it's evolution. Zoid and I have put new life into it, but with Quake 2's release around the corner, Zoid will be busy as hell with his work for Quake 2, I will be busy as hell with developers wanting to put their 3Dfx games out by Christmas, and well, the point is that everyone will just be busy. Zoid will still be hanging around to make sure QuakeWorld doesn't fall apart until Q2 comes out, and I'll be on the back end making sure that the OGL miniport for 3DFX still gives damned high framerates for your playing! So don't go talking in the newsgroups about how opposing sides forced me out or that X didn't get along with Y or anything stupid like that happened. What happened was that my dream job is just preempting my hobby is all, and I'm cool with that. I've also made a good friend of Zoid, and that is a very rewarding thing as well.Now, if you people think I'm out of the community tho, you're damned wrong. Nothing could drag me from QuakeSpy, and there ain't no moral dilemmas involved in me continuing that :)So this .plan will still be the same old shit, with me prolly evangelising 3Dfx a little more, but then again, how COULD I do more :)I'll also have more time to put for Quake Spy, which is also something I bet Joe, Tim, Bastard, and TeamQSpy are glad to hear :)

Hexen2 Strategy

The flood of strategy help for Hexen2 is on! This time it's from Phayyde moving to the new Hexenworld pages. Check out the new place over at www.hexenworld.com/strategon/

This is probably the coolest front-end util that I have seen for GLQuake, and now it has support for Hexen2 and any other GL based game that you wish to play. There is also support for running patches (CTF or Quake Mission Packs for example) Be sure and grab this baby.

Quake2 Stuff

Netgamer has posted their impressions of the Quake2 demo that has been showing at the ECTS show over the past couple of days at the Activision booth. Also Computer Games has posted their own preview of Quake2 as well.  Oh, and the new screenshots courtesy of PC Gamer are at the bottom of today's updates.

X-Men TC Shots

Zero Gravity, the company working on the X-Men TC for Quake. (This is actually endorsed by Marvel comics) has posted a few screenshots on their website. There are pics of the new models / levels / and textures as well. Pretty cool.

Brian Bruning Interview

The man from 3dfx, Brian of Developer Relations sat down for an interview with the boys over at VooDoo Extreme. He talks about stuff like the 6mb VooDoo cards and how they are not just a gimmick, but can and do prove very useful to developers.

Paul Shuytema Interview

The project leader of 3dr's highly anticipated next 3d game, Prey. (So advanced that you absolutely have to have a 3d accelerator card to even run the thing) Has done a nice interview over at the Questgate Prey page. check it out.

Wheel of Time News

Haven't heard much from these guys in a while, well Glen Dahlgren of Legend updated with this info:

"I know it's been a little while since my last update, so instead of  reporting the general news, I thought I'd give you a little glimpse into my latest activities. Most importantly, Epic has just returned from a very successful ECTS and made the new versio of the editor/engine available to us. When you're dealing with 30+ meg zipped files, transferring them takes the better part of a day. But man, is it worth it; this version includes improved 3D hardware acceleration, new special effects, scripted AI, tool that don't crash (as much), etc. etc. Our level designers (who haven't all gotten their paws on this one) are salivating. Internally, new textures from our dedicated fine-artists are starting to look really good. And initial architecture from the lds is v y promising (nothing to post yet, though). "

Hi

I've got a tumor or something, feeling about as bad as I have in a long time.. just got to work to update though (Dedication or stupidity, I'm not sure which) So gimme a bit. I apologize for being sick. :)

ECTS Pics

OGR.com has posted a few pictures that may be worth looking at if you are just dying to see what the hell this thing is all about. It's Euro-E3 ok? Thanks Prophet.

Demo

As always, I forgot to mention the weekly section update, A new demo is there which is of me making a complete fool of myself with rocketjumps. I slapped a few crazy shots in there (airborne of course) that have gotten me some nice email, so it is worth checking out. :)

Wampey in the Hizouse

The weekly polls are in, answering questions such as what people think about Hexen2, and all other sorts of good stuff. Check it out and fill out this weeks poll while you are there.

Cheating in Hexen2

Well, here it is.. seems people have found out about the cheat code available in Hexen2 deathmatch. Phayyde emailed me this info which well, you puds who like to cheat in deathmatch can enjoy:

Raven coded a backdoor cheat using HexenC into the Demo progs.dat. That's right. Raven coded a backdoor cheat into MULTIPLAYER deathmatch. Pretty cool, huh? I'm not so sure. The code looks like this:

void ()player_everything_cheat = {
if ( ((deathmatch || coop) && (self.netname != "Cosmos")) ) {

return ;

}
CheatCommand ( );
Artifact_Cheat ( );
self.puzzles_cheat = 1.00000;
};

It's all over the code. What it means, basically, is that ALL CHEATS WORK in deathmatch if your name is Cosmos. You can even fly. And be invincible. With unlimited everything. In deathmatch. I think this was a strategic move by Gummelt and the boys to make Hexen II registered more desirable. Well, that little strategy is going to work. Meanwhile, don't play on servers where you see guys maned "Cosmos". Beware: people can bind name commands along with the cheat impulse so that you'll never be able to tell that they are cheating. In other words, they could cheat and you wouln't even see the name Cosmos. Here's how. bind -key- "name Cosmos; impulse 9; name WhateverIt WasBefore" This works, I've tested it on my own machine with no opponents. The Hexen II servers are safe no more.

This is a direct clip from my page, the Strategon. It's at: http://www2.netdoor.com/~sjones/Strategon/

ECTS Coverage

The neverending ECTS coverage, here is a list of the latest places to get your fill of info:

.plan Wagon

Looks like John Cash is askin some of the mofos' to recognize! Homeboy is goin off! dig it:

WARNING: Bad Mood Plan Update

Stupid Rumor
------------
Quake 2's monster AI is in no way a derivative (AKA rip-off) of Steve Polge's work. We'll be releasing our prog source; don't you think it would be pretty damn obvious if I'd done that?

PC Gamer (Europe)
-----------------
They did a really nice review for their October issue. Lots of cool pictures and a very favorable article. But it seems that I may not actually work at id. There's one picture that shows I at least hang out here, but according to them the programming is done by John Carmack, assisted by "Bryan" Hook. They mention everyone here but me; yes, even Donna. Fuckers.

PC Gamer (US)
-------------
I don't care if these two magazines aren't related. These guys don't mention me either. Their October spread is really huge, like 20+ pages. Nice article and good review. You think they'd have had room for two nice four letter words (John Cash in case any of you absent minded reports see this). Bah! These magazines both mentioned Romero several times and he doesn't even work here anymore.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not an egotistical person. I don't live just to see my name up in lights. But it would be nice to see it somewhere down in the fine print.

Note to sCary: Here's one for your "Stuff that Sucks"... You work your ass off for months on end and still nobody knows who the fuck you are.

Note: Now this is freaking me out the more that I think about it, there are guys out there who actually read these sections that I am making that are over the age of 21.. It's wacky enough that my mom reads this stuff.. I'm gonna go have a breakdown now.

More SiNFO

Well, programmer stud boy across the office here Mark Dochterman decided to give out some details on the new way we are handling models / animations / and AI in SiN. It's really pretty damn long and includes a number of details. You better go check it out or I won't let you read my page anymore.

2 Qoole Beans

Qoole v2.0 is available on the website. Mr. Qoole himself seems to never get tired of working on this editor to make it the best thing he can possibly make, you better go download it and check it out. You can even order a CD with all kinds of custom extras included on it while you are there. -Vertigo

Palette Editor

If you are somewhat advanced into Quake editing / dorkin around with the engine and graphics, check out the new version of RGB (version 1.1) That lets you change the Quake palette to whatever you like. It's at the SHTF Homepage.

AFT Reviews / Interviews

Gamers.com has interviews and a review of the final day of the All Female Tournament that was held in California a little while ago. The top 3 finishers each answered a few questions for everyone to read. It's actually at http://quake.gamers.com/features/aft3/   -Prophet

New Visage

A new version of Visage, all puprose Mac Quake Pak Editor has been released, in case you are wondering "wtf is that?" well here is a better explanation:

"Visage is a tool for manipulating the graphic images contained in various Quake files (MDL, SPR, WAD, etc).   With Visage you can extract and replace any Quake graphic from any Quake file.   Visage supports cutting and pasteing through the clipboard and importing from and exporting to PICT files.   Visage is also a simple PAK editor.   Visage is also a random MAP file generator."

RASV + Transparent Water

Ok, so I forgot to mention this the other day, the Random Acts of Senseless Violence Quake pack has a patch available to make it work with transparent water with GLQuake. be sure to check out the website and grab it if you wan't to be able to call yourself cool.

SGI + Intel!?

Yow, Billy over at VooDoo Extreme emailed me about this, it seems that SGI has signed on with the boys over at Intel to begin shipping Wintel machines. Check out Billy's page for the full scoop.

Hexen2 + Modem

If you are strugging with trying to get a modem game of Hexen2 going, there is a tutorial out there just for you! Hexen2.com has some help by one of the guys at Raven themeselves that should get you on your way.

Pure3D Winners

SwanSong sent me some mail that it looks like the Pure3D winners have been announced on their website. Check it out to see if you are one of the lucky winners and can start playing GLQuake soon. :)

Thresh on USA

Just when you thought you had seen it all, the guy who won a Ferrari for playing a game of Quake scored himself a spot on the USA network last night, here is the email from Lithium:

I just got back from hanging out and turned on USA Network...what else was on but a pretty decent length section dedicated to Thresh...it went through his Doom to Quake experiences, and shows the ferrari of course...the most memorable quote was that he said he shipped the ferrari back from Atlanta because he did not know how to drive a stick shift. . .

New Section

Ok, this is wacky.. I have gotten 4 emails today suggesting I open up an email forumn type thing where people ask me questions about anything and I have the answer. (like Dear Abby, except she has a clue) Guess I should look into this. Btw, that weekend section just isn't gonna happen, I find that I need to make up for my 4 hours / night sleep on the weekends.

ECTS Assload

Quake2 Shots

Saw this mentioned over on Redw00d's so I figure I should show these off as well, there are actually 6 new screenshots of Quake2, and these ones are actually good.

q2scn02s.jpg (3640 bytes) q2scn02s.jpg (3640 bytes) q2scn02s.jpg (3640 bytes)

These shots come to you from Norman's Quake page, which is of course the place where everyone got their panties in a wad over that Quake2 sounds joke a while back. These look much better than the recent PC Gamer shots so I figured people might want to actually look at these ones. :)

Navy Seals Patch v1.8

Kinda forgot to mention this one yesterday, (dur) but well, Gooseman's coolbeans Weapons TC for Quake has been updated to v1.8, check out the new features:

CTF Expansion Pack

A new version of the Capture The Flag Expansion Pack has been released with bug fixes in the maps ctf1bsp6 and ctf1bsp9. I would recommend just downloading the two maps instead of the entire pack over again, but if you are a spoiled little T1 bastard just feel free to use up that bandwidth, see if I care!

Blue's Mailbag

Blue has made a couple of posts on his page talking with and about Steven Polge and his reaper bot source code being modified without his public release of the source. Check it out if that interests you.

Congrats to Scott Miller

I guess we should all be proud of Scott Miller over at Apogee (thanks Faustus), he seems quite happy with himself and Shadow Warrior after GT predicts 30,000 more copies sold due to this "controversy" over racism.

"Scott Miller, head of Apogee Software, Ltd.
(3D Realms Entertainment is a division of Apogee)

========================================
Sept. 7, 1997

* Our publisher, GTIS, tells us that we can expect Shadow Warrior to get at least another 30,000 sales thanks to all of the extra controversy this game has gotten."

... and there you were thinking that you were cool.

Daddy's Home

Yummy.. weekends..I uh, missed you guys or something, so decided to make an update. Keep in mind I am taking away from my work on my Spice Girls fan page to do this, so you better appreciate it!

Qoole Beans

White Fang, stud boy who is behind the Qoole project, Quake Object Oriented Level Editor sent along word of a release party, check out the mail:

There will be a Qoole 2.00 release party tomorrow night (Monday Sept. 8) at 6pm PDT (9pm EDT) on EFnet IRC #qoole. Everyone is invited. If you can provide a mirror site for the download, you are asked to show up one hour earlier (5pm PDT).

.plan Wagon

A couple of guys over at id have made some .plan updates worth looking at. Paul Steed has an absolutely huge .plan update that any person working on model animations should read. As always he has his own trademark bits that I feel obligated to quote here:

NOTE: THIS POST TURNED INTO A LONG ANIMATION TUTORIAL SO READ ON ONLY IF YOU DIG THAT SORT OF STUFF OR SIMPLY SKIP DOWN TO THE 'CHEST-BEATING' SECTION. ALSO NOTE THAT I SAY SOME BAD WORDS SO IF YOU'RE NOT 18 PLEASE FORGET THESE WORDS AND DON'T UTTER THEM, WRITE THEM, HEAR YOU PARENTS SAY THEM OR EVEN THINK THEM UNTIL MIDNIGHT OF THE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR 18TH BIRTHDAY WHERE YOU'LL PROUDLY REMEMBER THAT FUCKING COOL ARTIST DUDE AT id WHO HELPED MAKE QUAKE2 INTO ONE OF THE GREATEST ACTION GAMES EVER
<snip>

Now we come to the part where I decided to save some frames and make the interpolation take a more proactive role (kinda like letting her get on top for awhile)
<snip>

Brian Hook updated about racism in computer games, but had this little bit about Quake2 that you might like as well:

"ObQuake2: you guys are gonna love the power armor."

Quake2.com Tech Page

Slipgate sent out word that www.quake2.com will be hosting a new page dedicated to the technical side of Quake2 (soon to be released?) over at http://techie.quake2.com . This is stuff like graphical / sound specs etc. Be sure to stop by there if you have any kind of questions concerning the "techie" side of Quake2.

oh, while you are looking at Quake2 pages, check out www.pegasusworld.com

GameDesign Tips

As always, the Madman's Game Design page has been updated for the week, stuff that is going on this week:

Half-Life / Worldcraft

Saw over on Voodoo Extreme that there is an article on Gamespot talking about Half-Life and Worldcraft. (Version 1.5 was recently released, and it's pretty damn good)

While I'm ripping off Voodoo Extreme..

There is a list of things that people can expect in Quake2 that Unreal won't have, as well as a list of stuff that Unreal has and Quake2 won't have. considering Quake2 is closer to release, I'll list Quake2, :)

As far as I know here are the major features Quake 2 will have that Unreal doesn't...

Quake 2 has radiosity lighting (Unreal uses envelope-based shadow lighting). This is a conscious tradeoff I made. Radiosity makes for more realistic static lighting, but at a huge cost in precomputation time. I'd rather have more visual editability and dynamic lighting, and the cool effects (like spotlights and cylinder lights) afforded by enveloped lighting.

Quake 2 has hierarchical animation (Unreal uses interpolated, tweened, vertex animation). Quake 2's advantage is memory usage and that you can blow objects into pieces easily, while Unreal's animation is better for smooth, organic animations. I'm guessing Quake 2 uses mechanical cyborgs because hierarchical animations don't work well for more natural creatures.

Quake 2 has particle systems. Unreal uses mesh animations and fractally animated textures for special effects. I wouldn't say one technique is better than the other - they're very different approaces, and both look awesome. (Quake 2's railgun and Unreal's ASMD both kick ass!)

Dave Perry Interview

Dave Perry, one of the guys at Shiny, which is of course the company producing that very impressive looking game, Messiah (had movie of it posted last week) did an interview with Videogamedesign.com, check it out. -Prophet.

Diablo 2

Yea, not Quake but well, everyone loved the hell out of this game before cheating took over, OGR has a mention in their news about the sequel to this great game. They mention 5 new character classes, and a late 1998 release.
