Quake3 Shots [5:15pm]
None of that magazine scan stuff, these are the
actual screenshots of Quake3.
Check out this GZone preview of
Quake3 that um, is in another language but those pictures still work. :) Thanks Matt
for the word.
The images dont seem to load a lot of the time, I'll see if someone at aCtivision can verify if those shots are "exclusive" or not so I can mirror them here.
Drakan [12:25pm]
Well, now that Heretic2 and Half-Life are
seeing the light of day, my 3rd pick for coolest games in production, Drakan is getting a
bit of press. Check out the latest
Next-Gen article: -VE
SD: "Technologically the biggest challenge was creating vast worlds that could be viewed from almost any angle - namely from the ground or the air. The air was obviously a big challenge because we had to render armies of enemies on the ground beneath you and keep a decent frame rate. We wanted to do all this and have indoor environments. Layer technology was the solution. By layering morphed geometry together to create our worlds, the memory was much lower than by storing every triangle and vertex in the world individually. It also allowed us to have vast worlds and get away from the standard single landscape surfaces and static BSP Tree environments, typical in most games. In terms of armies of enemies, we were able to solve that problem by dynamically reducing the number of polygons in our models as you move farther away from the characters."
Half-Life Multiplayer [12:25pm]
GameSpot has gotten a chance to check out the latest version of
Half-Life and the multiplayer maps and they have posted their impressions of the
testing.
Concerning weapons, multiplayer matches take on some interesting strategies. First, one of the Valve level designers showed off a technique he used when he was being pursued. He quickly dropped a satchel charge and from a safe distance, pressed the remote detonation device and his opponent exploded. It feels a lot like the pipe bomb in Duke Nukem but the effect is bigger and the overall look is much better executed. The laser guided rocket launcher was probably the hardest to use.
16Bit GLQuake [12:25pm]
All this from the mighty BluesNews: Matthias "Maddes" Buecher of The Quake Info Pool sends word of an update to the bug list on the info pool, as well as a
couple of unsupported programs: a 16 bit OpenGL .dll for Quake
and QuakeWorld (27 KB), and a BSP Texture renamer
(91 KB). Users are strongly urged to read the read me before experimenting with these
programs. Here's the lowdown:
The "16-bit Texture Enabler For 3Dfx's Win32 Quake OpenGL Miniport" (OGL16BIT) will rename the OpenGL extensions for 8-bit paletted textures. So GLQuake has to use 16-bit textures which leads to an improved image quality (less quantization errors). Check out the readme before using this program and don't forget: use at your own risk!
Blood2 Demo2 [12:25pm]
Monolith has released a new Blood2 demo, to fix
the problems many of us have been having with mouse control, faulty AI, and performance.
Now's the time to do it, since Blood has gone gold, remember?

SIN [12:25pm]
Scott Alden sent out
word for the people trying to play SIN in high res wondering what was up with
selecting one video mode and getting another:
Resolution changing problem with the menus has been isolated. 960x720 was left out of the menu, so all the modes are off by 1 after 800x600.
If you're so lucky as to be able to run at 1024x768, crank the setting over to 1152x864.

Blood2 GOLD [4:25pm]
Word from Jason
Hall is that Monolith's latest title has gone gold. Blood2. Jason also talks a bit
about recent SHOGO stuff. The point release for the multiplayer patch is slated for the
15th.
Blood 2 is now much better optimized n' stuff and is now GOLD. GT has it and they are now "doing what they do" with it! Expect it in the stores very soon.
Now that Blood 2 is gold, we are planning on re-releasing the more optimized demo. All that is really left for the new demo is for it to be tested (I'm installing it now - whoo hoo!). As soon as it passes all testing, we will make it available for the people who are interested! People who played the original Blood 2 demo and had speed/mouse/bug issues should be much happier with the new one.Once again, thank you all for your helpful input! This newer demo will also be a better gauge to determine how fast the final version of B2 will run on your system!
SIN Optimizations [2:35pm]
Here you go, word from Ritual on a couple of
tricks you can pull to speed up those load times on SIN maps. I never could figure out why
it was crashing on me at the end of level2 btw. Just had to skip ahead. :(
***SIN LOADING TIMES***
If you want to increase your times for loading quick saves type these commands at the console before you start a game:
developer 1
set flushmap 0
This speeds up "quick" loads i.e. when you already have the map loaded. Dying in the game isn't as painful now :-)
By setting developer to 1, it will not draw the status bar, so you won't get to see in between level information. This will save you about 20 or so seconds of loading time on just about any map. You will probably also see some warnings printed out since developer provides verbose information about what's going on in the game.
"flushmap" was used to explicitly free maps after they are already loaded for development purposes.
Tribes [11:25am]
I'm still kind of split about being excited
about this game or not, but you guys should check out the new Tribes preview that AVault has
posted.
What makes Tribes so addictive isn't just the enormous outdoor environments; it's not the massive 32-player capable online play; nor is it the 20x rifle that can cap an enemy from two miles away. It's not any one of those things -- it's all of them, and a lot more. The features built into this title are all top notch. High resolution 3D graphics make sure the game will be no slouch in the visual appeal department.
Heavy Gear2 [11:25am]
Um, the demo is delayed for the second time
now. They swear it is getting awful close to a demo release though. Here is the verbage
from the aCtivision page:
The multiplayer bug that has been delaying release has been a pesky one, which has taken longer than expected to fix. The update from Production is that it has now been fixed, and our QA Department is currently performing a final compatibility sweep of the demo. Despite our best forecasts earlier in the week, the demo will not be out today. Whether release occurs tomorrow or later depends on what QA finds in its sweep. We are very close!

In late December/early January they will also be releasing the K6-3 (Sharptooth) which will be 450Mhz and 500Mhz....which will have 256K cache on board....
450 is right in Q1... I'm not sure about 500 though... Q2? the 256K L2 is right... the igee is that I'm not sure that December/Jan. are right... I know we'll be in full production at that time but I don't think they've decided on a release timeframe yet...it's still undecided...

Checked out TombRaider3 last night, The most
noticeable improvement I can see in the game is the incredible numerical increase from 2
all the way up to 3. After playing Heretic2 and using a mouse in 3rd person, using a
keyboard just feels like crud.
I'm now completely setup with the new lan here at home. Finding a *good* ISDN isp in Dallas is proving a bit more difficult than I thought. GTE = hourly rates = I dont use them anymore.

TombRaider 3 Demo [10:15pm]
The PC.IGN guys have posted the TombRaider 3 demo here. I'm fighting with
hardware a bit more here at the homefront than I surely planned on. This crap better pay
off in the end damn it!
Oh man it's been a long wait, but the Tomb Raider III demo is finally here. Tal and I have been playing the heck out of this thing for the past few days and I have to tell you, it's pretty damn fun. Just click here if you're using a modem and here if you've got a network connection and you'll be on your way. If you run into trouble with either of these give this a try. We offer these tips for those of you downloading the demo for the first time.
SIN Troubles [2:15pm]
If you already have a copy of SIN, make sure
you arent using that autoload CD menu that ships with the CD after you install the game.
Just use the desktop icon that was created during setup. Here's Don's .plan
update on that issue and a few others.
oh, Wednesday's section is up, Thursday's is canned due to me not having a playable connect past couple of days, and Tuesday's will be up in about an hour. :) I had to take a road trip today to pick up some hardware.
SIN [10:05am]
Started playing a bit of SIN myself last night.
(It was crashing on me though, bleh) but the boys at SharkyExtreme played through Ritual's
baby and have posted up a
review. Also, if you are having problems with the SBLive! and SIN, here is a fix for you.
Does SiN raise the genre to a new level? Not exactly. However, that was never Ritual's intent. They've clearly taken the Quake II engine, admittedly aging technology, and transformed it into a fresh game in an industry cluttered with clones. Through solid level design, a twisted sense of humor, familiar weapons, interactivity and near-perfect netplay SiN raises the bar for its competition, making their job that much tougher.
Carmack's FRAG2 Talk [10:05am]
Shooters tonight will be airing the
videotaped talk that John Carmack gave at the recent CPL FRAG2 Tournament. The show starts
at 7pm PST so go ahead and try. Your best bet is probably to wait till tomorrow after the
initial rush is over. Speaking of which Carmack is going to give another talk at the PGL finals in San Francisco next week:
John Carmack, co-founder, owner, and lead programmer of id Software, will appear in person on Nov. 14th, for the third and final day of the AMD PGL Championships being held at Club-i in San Francisco. He's not just there to witness the deciding matches in both the 1-on-1 (Quake II) and Teamplay (4-on-4 Quake clans) categories featuring id games.
From 2:45 to 3:30 (Pacific Time), he'll also be fielding questions and suggestions regarding the development of the much-anticipated Quake III Arena.
AMEN Shots [10:05am]
CaveNews
has gotten a hold of 3 new screenshots of AMEN from CaveDog. I'm hoping we hear a bit more
about this game now that SIN & Half-Life have both been completed. From what little we
do know the game sounds nifty.
Tribes Shots [10:05am]
I'll have to admit I never did get over to the Tribes
booth at FRAG2 last weekend, oops. Kamosa at Dynamix has posted the screenshot archive for
October. Within it are the first looks at the flying scouts and personnel carriers,
as well as various other gadgets. The most stunning however have to be the 3

Unreal Arena? [10:05am]
Next-Gen posted this article with some
speculation on the "next project" that the boys at Epic may be working on.
In a statement regarding earnings GT revealed two choice news tidbits that had not yet been announced.
The first, and certainly biggest, is Unreal Tournament, a title that, according to the release, is scheduled for an early 1999 release. While there were no details on this heretofore unannounced product, we're fairly certain from the name that it's going to be a multiplayer only title like Quake III.
However, shortly after that Mark Rein made a statement over at PlanetUnreal which makes things just more of a mystery
Unfortunately I can't engage the gossip caused by the GT financial press release. They obviously made a big mistake in using the name of an unannounced product in their press release but I can't reverse that now.
When we're ready to announce what Unreal Tournament is then we'll announce it. That will probably be in 4-6 weeks. Until then I'm sure we'll have to endure a lot of inaccurate speculation as to what the product is based solely on what people think they can figure out from two simple words in a press release. Oh well, these things happen.
Blood2 [10:05am]

Carmack on Q3A [5:45am]
John Carmack, Mr. programmer guy over there at id
Software updated
his .plan with a bit of a summary of the speach he gave at the recent CPL FRAG2 Quake2 Tournament that RiX won. It looks like
Quake3 is going back to the QuakeC roots of anyone can customize the game. This time it's
in ANSI C. Post what you think over at the Quake3 msgboard eh?
...The only real solution to these problems is to use an interpreted language like Quake 1 did. I have reached the conclusion that the benefits of a standard language outweigh the benefits of a custom language for our purposes. I would not go back and extend QC, because That stretches the effort from simply system and interpreter design to include language design, and there is already plenty to do.
I had been working under the assumption that Java was the right way to go, but recently I reached a better conclusion.
The programming language for QuakeArena mods is interpreted ANSI C. (well, I am dropping the double data type, but otherwise it should be pretty conformant)
The game will have an interpreter for a virtual RISC-like CPU. This should have a minor speed benefit over a byte-coded, stack based java interpreter. Loads and stores are confined to a preset block of memory, and access to all external system facilities is done with system traps to the main game code, so it is completely secure.
The tools necessary for building mods will all be freely available: a modified version of LCC and a new program called q3asm. LCC is a wonderful project -- a cross platform, cross compiling ANSI C compiler done in under 20K lines of code. Anyone interested in compilers should pick up a copy of "A retargetable C compiler: design and implementation" by Fraser and Hanson.
Speaking of which, The boys from Pseudo videotaped John Carmack's speach at FRAG2 and will be airing it this week in it's entirety. Thursday at 7pm EST. LinuxGames has posted a bit of a summary of their own from Carmack's talk as well.
Steed's Q3 Talk @ FRAG2 [6:15am]
The boys at Q2PMP have posted a report from FRAG2 going
over the details that Paul Steed revealed for Quake3 at his recent talk. -Blues
2. Arena will be client side for added speed. They have upped the framerate to 15 fps, things will look smoother at no cost to speed. The game speed should not be much slower than Quake 2's current gameplay.
3. If you got a glimpse of the PC Gamer article, we saw where Paul had modeled the designers. Arena will come with a tutorial on how anyone can "digitize" themselves into the game. They are trying very hard to make the game more easily customizable.
4. Paul says he is gonna do about a dozen models for Arena. Don't get him wrong. He wants to do a bunch of models, "especially a bunch of women" but he knows that the public is just gonna throw their own stuff in anyway, and they are trying to promote customizing more.(He expressed that a lot) So what we'll get will be "the basic toolset".
Duke4 [6:15am]
Chris Day of 3DPortal
made a trip down to the FRAG2 Tournament this
weekend and was given the opportunity to check out Duke Nukem4 being worked on by
3DRealms. Chris is the first person I know of to have seen Duke4 since the switch from
Quake2 technology to Unreal code. Here is his story
which gives away ZERO details on Duke4, but hey he said my announcing was the highlight of
the event, so what the hell. :)
Based on what I got a chance to see, not only does 3D Realms have their sights set on creating the best FPS ever, but they are obviously headed in that direction just a couple months after the switch from the Quake 2 engine to the Unreal engine. Perhaps the coolest thing of all though, even more so than most of what I can't mention, is the sketches of artist Paul Richards, which are beautiful and really set up the look and the feel of the game perfectly.
Nihilistic [6:15am]
PC.IGN has posted a new article talking with the Nihilistic crew
about their new technology and what we can hope for. -VE
"Our primary focus with this engine is creating a highly moody and realistic environment, so we are spending the most time working on features involving lighting, shadows, fog, etc," said Huebner. "We also have some really incredible 3D artists working on models, so we've spent a lot of time in the engine creating a character rendering system that does them justice."
Blood2 [6:15am]
The Monolith guys have word on an updated Blood2 demo
to be released after receiving many complaints.
Serious optimizations have been made (and are still being made).
It is WAY (and I mean WAY) faster now on ALL systems (especially lower end). If you can currently play Shogo with a reasonable framerate, you *should* be able to play Blood 2 just fine.
The mouse "feel" has been fixed. Much smoother. MUCH, MUCH SMOOTHER! The way it should be...
Qizmo [6:15am]
A new version of Qizmo

excited, but maybe you guys feel differently. Here are some images from www.halflife.org.
Voice Communication [4:35pm]
Wacky coincidence I guess that the release of 2 different voice communication programs
that you can use along side with Quake2 have been released. First off Here is BattleField
Communicator:
Battlefield Communicator is available in demo form as a free download from the ShadowFactor website (http://www.shadowfactor.com/). Users can register the software on-line for $24.95US. The Battlefield Communicator Dedicated Server is available as a free download at the ShadowFactor website.
After you check that out, take a look at RogerWilco that Blue ran across today.
Roger Wilco is a stand-alone application that allows you and your friends to talk to each other while playing multiplayer online games. It works with most existing games such as Quake II, DIABLO, and StarCraft, and does not require subscriptions or dedicated servers. Indeed, it works with 28.8K modems, because thats what a lot of people have! It seems to be part of the game, and lets you talk to friends and enemies instead of typing messages.
IDDA [4:35pm]

Disruptor [4:35pm]

the turning point of my life and career.

Half-Life Mission Pack [1:05pm]
