I'm not here

Ok monkeys, I'm takin off on a flight to LA and will be MIA probably until Sunday. Just got done doing a little bit of "Marine Work" as Redwood calls it over at id. Ran across a couple other people there as well. The thing that impressed me most is how much better the character animations are now. (Actually it probably goes back to programming, as the animations were always good) but uh, it looks great. Gimme a copy to take home eh?

Top 100 Quake Levels

The guys at www.meccaworld.com have finally put together what a lot of people have been waiting for. A list of the top 100 Quake levels to ever see the net. Head on over to their Quake section and have a look at what they said.

Jedi Day

Several different items of interest in Jedi land:

Thanks to JediKnight.net for all those bits of news.

Quake Art

PaK emailed me about this Quake Art Page which I found pretty interesting so figured here was a good place to link it. :) It's the Quake Easel!

Thursay Night Quake League

I kinda like this idea, a league that plays once a week.. set aside your Thursday nights and head on over to the League page to sign your clan up.

3D Mapping Guild

A new page dedicated to all the map makers out there has been opened up. There are several tips / and bits of info there for you to check out and maybe learn something.

Linux QW Server Parser

Check out this homepage for info on LQWSpy. As stated on Blue's page, this parser has nothing to do with GameSpy / QuakeSpy, but just shares the same word "spy" and happens to also parse Quake servers. :)

ClanRing v3.1

Just got this email from homecut Paul Baker of ClanRing:

w00p! The first beta of 3.1 is out the door. I need everyone to help test it for any bugs. As of this posting, the only server running it is clanring.mpog.com:26000. It has been sent to the other test servers and will hopefully be up on all of them by this afternoon. Look below for the list of development servers. If the teamplay variable displays 2?ClanRing3.1 or something to that affect than it is running the beta and you should connect to it and play on it :) Things everyone should test out:

Leet Ass Status Bar - When you connect to the server type "statusbar" or "sb" for short. Then make sure you increase the size of your screen all the way. If you are running glquake or some other higher res version, type "setres". A menu will popup showing you the available resolution heights. Type the number of the resolution you are at. This should move the LASB down to the proper spot on the screen.

New & Improved FreeLook - This was written by Sinth[LoD]. It is way better than the freelook of the previous versions. Everyone check this out, I'm pretty sure you will like it. When you are ChaseCam-ing someone (type "chasecam"), type "freelook". Now move the mouse in whatever direction you want to look.

SetGib - This doesn't really need to be tested, but you all can play with it. Type "setgib" and it will call a vote to either turn gibs off or on. This really has no point, except having them off is a beneficial to HPB players, as gibs (especially at the start of the match) can really lag modemers at times. Oh, and sometime today I should have all the commands below up to date with 3.1. But don't hold your breath :)

Check out the ClanRing Mod page.

Speaking of Servers..

Just got word from Patrick over at VRGames that in addition to those 32 QuakeWorld servers, they are running 4 NetQuake servers with the Clanring mod, and will be firing up 4 more QWRING servers sometime today. Yummy!

GLQuake + QW Help

Thank you to Brett "3 Fingers" Jacobs for permission to use his GLQuake setup guide as the GLQuake help section on my beloved Sugar Shack. I Just spent a while turning this guide into html and will pass over it again now and fine tune it. Make good use of the ctrl-f search engine, because this thing is big.

Speaking of 3D..

Thanks to Dr. Z for the email that there is a 32 3D card roundup looking at "affordable 3D cards" for everyone to look at and choose from over at the PC Magazine Online page.

PowerVR's 2nd Gen

PowerVR, the guys behind the PCX2 (which btw is not their 2nd gen chip) are hard at work on a yet to be named chipset, here is a quote from the Next-Gen article: -Hanif

As it stands right now, sources have indicated that there will be at least five new chipsets all based around a reference piece of second generation PowerVR technology. The original names of Highlander and PMX only referred to one such chipset: the one slated for base use in PCs. This leaves a host of other chips which will be used for everything from Dural (which also is said to have a new as-yet-unknown name) to arcade applications.

3D Sound Land

Couple of notes on the 3D Sound Card market:

Jumping on the audio/video editing bandwagon, Canopus announced the DV-M1 Firewire editing system. The kit will incorporate the Sony DVBK1 hardware DV codec, and will consist of a full-length PCI card and a 5.25-inch I/O dock that can either mount inside a free 5.25-bay or free-stand on your desktop. Multi-channel audio processing, DV data transfer for IEEE-1394 camcorders, and robust software features round out this package.

DemTool

Forgot to mention this one yesterday, the demo tool that the guys from Quake Done Quick used to piece together all those amazing demos is available now for public consumption. If you havent yet checked out the QDQ demo, make sure and have a look while you are there.

Requiem Servers

If you are looking to play a bit of Requiem, the homepage has been updated with a list of servers for you to check out and find the best ping to.

Job Search

w00, more job openings in the gaming industry, the Mad Samoan, Jeff Wand, over at Ion Storm is looking for a 2d artists with the Photoshop skillz. here is a quote:

A11-19-97

If anyone knows of a good 2d/Photoshop artist that's really good with medieval themes, could you send them my way or e-mail me? It would require moving to Dallas too. I only want to see 2d samples of drawings or 2d computer work.

Crash Landing

Man.. this stinks. Another victim of real life. Crash's Single Player Quake Page, which was one of the best in the business will no longer be updated. Thanks Crash for all your hard work.

Comdex Reports

Thanks Hanif for this list of articles coming out of Next-Gen talking about all that is happening at Comdex right now while you are just chillin there on your computer:

Half-Life Demo in April

The Sierra page has been updated just to confirm what I think was pretty much implied a while back when Sierra put out that older press release announcing the delay of Half-Life a while back. A playable demo of Half-Life will be available for download hopefully in the middle of April. This will be 30 - 45 days prior to the full game becoming availalbe on store shelves. -Blue's

HexMaker

The guys behind Deathmatch Maker, Virtus, have posted the Hexmaker page for your enjoyment. This of course is the Hexen2 strain of Deathmatch Maker, their entry into the level editor battles. -Blue's

VRGN Goes Live

Good god, we got ourselves 32 new QuakeWorld servers all at once courtesy of VR Games. Check it:

VRGN, or Virtual Reality Games Network, or http://www.vrgames.net is the totally FREE broadband Internet gaming site and it is up and online and ready for play.

VRGN is the first completely dedicated, full-pipe, T3 bandwidth, NO USER ACCOUNTS, non-ISP, in your face Internet multi-player game server site on the Internet.

If it ain't games, it ain't on VRGN!

....and if you can't believe me when we say we have the power to run this many servers, take a look at this........ http://209.39.134.2/servers/bigbox.html

An Internet based multimedia entertainment service powered by more than two million dollars' worth of INTEL and Sun Microsystems hardware and software, is at the ready to become the ultimate on-line gathering place for gaming fans from around the world. The site is driven by NetraTMInternet servers, SPARCserverTM systems, and SolsticeTM SunNet ManagerTM software - from Sun Microsystems and the multi-player Internet servers are dual INTEL Pentium II 300mhz with 256 mbytes of RAM and SCSI III interface peripherals running the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0+. The website is fed by a high-capacity, 44.7 Mbps DS-3 fiber optic communications link provided by AT&T WorldNet.

The QW servers (which I get like a 20ping too.. heh) are on 209.39.134.2 to .4 on ports 27500 - 27507 The only thing lacking is running the QWRING mod on a couple of the servers, which I'll suggest to them this afternoon. Several servers are running Arena, PainKeep etc, check out the id Misc master.

update: Patrick was quick! He just emailed me back saying "consider it in the works"

Jedi Launcher

The JediKnight.net guys never sleep, here is the latest news from Jedi world:

Well... Running patches have been a problem for some in the JK community. One individual has stepped forward and created a separate program just for launching / organizing patches. It also allows you to set various other settings for the game. ie. (display properties).

Here's the breakdown:

Author: Michael B. Klein mailto:michael@kbk.org

Program: Jedi Knight Patch Commander (229k) (Readme Included) http://www.jediknight.net/files/jkpatch.zip

Pure3D Drivers

Some new drivers for my favorite 3dfx based card. Check out the Canopus Pure3d page and download the new drivers. -Blue

H3D

H3D, (who were apparently at id Software yesterday according to Brian Hook) will finally be hitting the market soon. They have been nice enough to offer me a pair for "evaluation" although I have already witnessed the coolness of these things back at QuakeCon, and most recently The FRAG. Check out the website.

H3D has also recently signed a deal with EA -Hanif.

All Star CTF v0.91

The new version of All Star CTF has been released over at the homepage. 4 new levels have been added in this version so be sure to go over there and download the new client pack.

Free Ion Stuff

The guys at Ion Storm are giving away free t-shirts etc as well as possibly a lifetime supply of Ion Storm games to people who fill out the new survey they have posted.

GameSpy Competetion

The guys at www.gamespy.com are holding a competetion to come of with the new sounds for launching GameSpy. they are giving away $300 worth of stuff, and the honor of your sound being heard around the world.

.plan Wagon

What all the homeys are sayin:

Please note that I accidently left a little debugging code in Linux Q2Test. When you fire it up and it says, "waiting...", just hit [ENTER].

If you are using GL on a 3DFX, make sure to kill the gpm process or you won't have mouse support (gpm doesn't give it up when the 3DFX goes into operation).

Overall, looks like a good release. Anyone running it with 2.1 Linux Kernels? If so, does sound work? Drop me a note.

Everyone elses opinion on the games you play:

Oh, speaking of console games, I happened to notice my N64 collecting some dust as of late so bought a new game for it, NFL Quarterback Club 98.. Just wanted to say it is the most incredible looking Football sim I have ever seen. As for the gameplay though, um.. I watched Charlie call a pass play over and over marching down the field because of pass interference getting called every time he used it. I guess the AI sucks a gonad. It'll still rock for 2 players against each other though.

Mergers

Couple of "mergers" goin on in the web that are worth note.

Quake Design Follow Up

Well, I happened to be talking to Romero on the phone earlier and the subject of that "design doc" that I posted yesterday came up. John told me that they had a bunch more stuff that he brought in from his house this morning and I agreed that everyone would love to see all the old design ideas etc that were talked about and what actually made it into the game.

I always wondered what the heck happened to that Hell cube.. Expect something over at www.ionstorm.com "soon"

Levelord Spotlight

Gosh.. a picture of our own Levelord from Ritual as a kid.. isn't it cute? Siren's Pic Page has posted the spotlight on Richard with him answering a few questions. An interview even!

Q2 Test for Linux

Thanks to Redwood for the word that Zoid has released the Linux port of Quake2 Test Demo. There is support for SVGALib console, X11, and mesaGL w/3dfx VooDoo.

Grab it from Ritual - q2test-i386-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

Redwood listed these other 3 sites to download it from but they werent working for me. Oh, this includes a .pak file and everything, you only need this download to play Q2 under Linux.

Interviews:

Malice for QuakeWorld

Here is the email I just got from Embrionic of QA:

Here's the official MaliceWold progs version 1.00. Server Admins... just drop this file in your \quake\malice directory..

Then run:
\quake\qwsv +gamedir malice

We are still tweeking the installer. All it does is allow you to use
the Malice palette with QuakeWorld. This will be resolved in the next day or two. In the meantime, search for those MaliceWorld servers and jump on =)
The first official server is at:
208.129.23.5:27500

The pcx must go in your quake\malice\skins directory.
If you're running a server (or have a question) contact us at

Year In Review

The Quake Womens Forum year in review post is up. Check out the page and cast your vote for coolest stuff to have happened in 1997. My vote goes for all those guys getting jobs in the gaming industry. :)

Daikatana FAQ

Another version of the Daikatana FAQ has already been released. Up to a spankin v0.2 now. What's new in this version you ask? Um.. I bet some people came up with some new questions and now they are answered.

DC-Con

The next big LAN tournament that you are obligated to attend if you consider yourself a real Quake fanatic. DC-Con has been announced. Check out the homepage hosted by Clan Kapitol. They are talking 4 - 500 players. I know I'm gonna try and be there. :)

Apocolypse in GL

Steve Fukuda emailed me about these great looking new screenshots of the Apocolypse project that they have posted. Seems their project and GLQuake get along again.

Pro Gamers Press

Seems the idea of professional gaming is being pushed pretty damn hard. Saw on Blue's this link to a Sacremento Bee article talking about the PGL / Cyberathlete concept, and also it seems the latest issue of Forbes magazine has a profile of Thresh.

Star Wars CTF

The Star Wars CTF project is now under new ownership. Clan Z has taken it over and plans for version2.0 are already in the works.

Quake Finder v1.1

New version of QuakeFinder for the Macintosh has been relesed.

WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.1?

- Drag and drop servers between lists
- Drag text onto a list window to extract the servers
- Auto-saves Default file on close (still asks first for other files)
- Added Refresh Current List menu command by popular demand
- Added Select None menu command
- Beeps when extracting servers from text and no servers are found
- Server queries are aborted faster
- Fixed a possible problem with keeping track of the Quake application
- Game: popup menu in List Info fixed on non-Appearance Manager systems
- Clear key now deletes instead of Escape
- Escape key now aborts as with Cmd-Period

What the homecuts are up to:

11/17
*made it so you can't launch barrels in to orbit
*fixed some globals that were shared but were supposed to have been statics
*verified all monsters were present and could be killed on a couple of levels
*updated some of chick's code that was behind the times
*a bunch of the monsters had their gib sound playing on the wrong channel
*re-enabled monster light sensativity
*finished rewrite of the turret code (AKA "the stuff")
*stopped certain classes of monster infighting that were useless
(like a fish trying to take on a flying monster)
*made sure that dead players/monsters can not activate triggers

Q2 Test for Linux

Thanks to Redwood for the word that Zoid has released the Linux port of Quake2 Test Demo. There is support for SVGALib console, X11, and mesaGL w/3dfx VooDoo.

Grab it from Ritual - q2test-i386-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

Redwood listed these other 3 sites to download it from but they werent working for me. Oh, this includes a .pak file and everything, you only need this download to play Q2 under Linux.

VooDoo2 for GameCenter

Yea, oh my goodness, an evening update.. After being amazingly skeptical about a company with a proven track record. (Looking like fools) GameCenter has given their first impressions of the VooDoo2 chipset from 3dfx. The GCenter guys got to look at the chipset first hand at the Comdex show. Actually they convinced the Jazz Multimedia guys to loan them a card for a bit of testing.

Prey Update

The 3DRealms page has been updated with the progress of Prey. They also released a couple of new screenshots that are pretty cool looking, here is one of them: Found that one out from Blue's page.

Speaking of 3DR and Prey, they have also announced the signing of KMFDM for the Prey soundtrack. Thanks to www.preystation.com (Lithium) for the word on that.

The Plans for Quake?

Mansa made a visit to id Software back in QuakeCon97 and while in the area that was once John Romero's desk, Tim Willits and he ran across this document which Willits said was Romero's plan for Quake, here is the page I got it from, thanks to THE ^TSuba.

Update: Just got email from Tim Willits:

-Hello,
Feel free to add to the page that this was the ENTIRE design document for the Shareware version of Quake 1.

Heh, heh..

SiN in PC Gamer

The December issue of PC Gamer has a nice 3 page preview of SiN which everyone should check out. There is a screenshot or two that have not been seen as well as a few bits more of info on the weapons that Ritual is currently developing.

KeyGrip v1.0 Released

Something a LOT of people have been waiting for out there in Quake .dem editing land has finally been released. Version 1.0 of KeyGrip, the Quake demo editor. This new version is MUCH MUCH faster than the previous version. (I remember the old one bogging down a pp200 with 128megs) If you are interested in making "Quake Movies" this would be a wise choice of tools. Check out the homepage for details.

Hover Released

w00, all sorts of stuff is getting released all of a sudden. Hover, a racing / shooter TC for Quake is available for download over at the Means of Destruction page. There are already more plans for future versions of Hover that sound pretty cool. This is version 0.6 -Redwood's

FAQ Proxy v1.0

Let's go for the 3rd cool release of the day here.. FAQ Proxy, a program that everyone extremely thankful for over at the T3 Tournament, has been released. (Speaking of the T3 tourney, the U4 vs DeathRow finals are coming up this weekend, there are like 7 members from CPL and PGL between the two clans.. should rock) Here is a list of the new features in FAQ Proxy:

-- Reconnect & follow commands.
- Powerup timer.
- Report your armor/health/weapon/ammo/location/powerups/visible_players
with one command.
- Certain messages can be used to trigger sounds.
- Automatically detects pmodel/emodel cheaters.

HeadHunters Quake

Version 3.1 of HeadHunters, possibly the final version, is available on the homepage. I finally watched some people play this patch at the Muppet Clan lan party. Wintermute laid the smack down. Btw, I got to play Gonzo there, he's a hell of a player, amazingly aggresive.

This will probably be the final version of Headhunters, and is totally bug-free. Enjoy it. And if you haven't already, be sure to check out the new strategy guide for a complete Headhunters strategtic primer."

PCI Sound

Saw a link to an interesting article on Redwood's page about Creative Labs and the anticipation of them releasing a PCI based sound card on GameCenter.

Banshee in 98

There is an article on Yahoo, a "10-Q" form that talks about the chipset after VooDoo2 from 3dfx, Banshee. Banshee is an all in one chipset (Kinda like the VooDoo Rush, but fast..) Banshee looks like it will hit OEM as early as 1st Quarter of 98, and will see store shelves around the 2nd quarter.

Vid Drivers / BIOS

Team Fortress Bot

Wolfgang Lehrach needs someone to take over the TeamFortress bot project that he has been working on. Wolfgang seems to be in a rut and wants the project to get done, so someone else with fresh ideas and free time would be a peachy help, here is a quote:

Thanks for all the letters of support from the TF communitee. The reason I'm stopping is that this bot is going nowhere at the moment and I'm doing nobody any favours by hanging on to it.

Everyone elses opinion on the games you play:

.plan Wagon

All kinds of .plan updates goin down:

* talked to John Tynefield at 3Dfx, and he implemented a new environment variable for 3DFXGL.DLL that prevents the pass-through from kicking in when the focus is list from the application. This greatly assists debugging.
* last night my code dump didn't get fully copied up, so I had to re-merge the new source base with old source base before I could get any work done.
* credits were not being properly centered because of a stupid bug, fixed it.
* messed around with Visual Quantify for quite a bit. The features and UI look like they may not suck, but right now I'm not getting output I consider valid, mostly because I don't know how to use, which is a by product of their really really bad documentation. I'm going to see if Rational won't hold my hand on this one.
* went to dinner at Steak and Ale
* read old Microprocessor Report article on the Hitachi SH-4. Man, that chip just sounds like it's gonna ROCK!
* player config menu was radically redone, again. I had to rewrite our file scanning code to support "musthave" and
"canthave" attributes, then I also had to put support for directory scanning into the menus. I spent the vast majority of today working on the player config menu and support routines related to it. It's not completed, I still need to put in the skin icons and also filter out the skin icon PCX files, but other than that, it's looking pretty groovy, baby.
11/15
*fixed a crash when a nextframe override had been set but the current move was changed afterwards
*changed a sound name for American
*fixed soldiers in melee attack mode continued to fire after enemy was dead
*made flies work again
-worked on some other stuff that didn't get completed today
