The FRAG
Well, as always even in a building filled with ISP's, T3's etc, we didnt score an internet connection down at The FRAG for the first day (Note the lack of updates on Blue's / Red's etc.. heh) . They were just getting things ironed out late in the evening while I was announcing the rounds though, The prelims will be finished up around 2-3pm today, then the 1on1 double elimination 64 man (and woman) tournament will begin.
Several people have been volunteering and working their butts of to help us make this thing happen. The FRAG has turned out to be the largest event of this kind ever, and we are very proud of what has been accomplished. Hundreds and hundreds of players are here, of the top caliber playing ability going at it to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes and a shot at maybe making it into the CPL.
Due to the absolute huge number of entries, we held off on making demos until we get to the higher rounds. Also, We were gonna post the results from the first 10 rounds of elims, but will be waiting instead till all 17 rounds of 16 player matches have been completed. I will then post the 64 player names who advanced, along with their rankings.
I have also started work on a cool little photo album of The FRAG that you guys may wanna check out. I'm making it somewhat nice so it most likely wont be posted till around Monday evening.
Oh uh.. in case you are wondering, we are having the times of our lives. Last nights highlights included watching players like the EG brothers mikeJ and Threat both blow out their prelim matches taking a high ranking, then the last night of the match watching Kornelia win her prelim, finishing with 90 frags, 30 more than 2nd place Forego, who places 2nd at QuakeCon earlier this year.
In case you are wondering I saw several members of id Software at The FRAG, including having a chance to talk to Paul Steed for a couple of minutes myself. There will be presentations of Ion Storm's Daikatana at 1pm, and Ritual Entertainment's Sin at 4pm today.
Ah.. last thing (until I pop on sometime this afternoon with scores from the prelims) AVault has posted a "media report" talking about the goings on here at The FRAG.
Daikatana Shot
OGR is still at it, posting yet another screenshot of the day for Daikatana for you to check out.
Quake2 Contest
Thanks to VooDoo Extreme for the word that id Software has begun their own contest in cooperation with 3dfx! Check out the homepage for details on just how you can go there and win stuff.
New PowerVR Drivers
Vik Long sent out this set of new drivers for the PowerVR to run GLQuake even better. He mentioned to me on the phone that these drivers fix the dynamic lighting weirdness that people were upset about earlier. The speed on the PowerVR should be about equal to a 3dfx card now, except half the price.
CPL
The Cyberathletics organization, who are behind this weekends LAN tournament, The FRAG, have gone public with the players league that we have been so hard at work on for the past several months:
The Cyberathlete(tm) Organization, the first professional computer gamers organization in the world, announced today the formation of a new gamers league called the Cyberathletic Professional League or CPL(tm). The CPL will introduce a new Cyberathletic ranking system and will oversee all Cyberathletic tournaments and events. The first CPL tournament will take place in Dallas, Texas on March 6th, 1998 and will attract approximately 2,000 computer game players from all over the world. This tournament will have total cash prizes of about $50,000, in addition to other prizes like computers systems, computer peripherals and game software.
The CPL tournaments will be regulated by the newly appointed CPL Board of Directors that will consist of the following industry experts:
John Romero, Founder - ION Storm
Mike Wilson, CEO - ION Storm
Harry Miller, CEO - Ritual Entertainment
Frank Cabanski, Director - Quake ClanRing
Mike Wardwell, Athletic Director - Cyberathlete Organization
Level Designer - Ritual Entertainment
The Cyberathlete web site at http://www.cyberathlete.com will be completely
revised to include a new CPL section and other new additions..

The FRAG
As about a thousand or so people may know here in Dallas, we have been hard at work all evening setting up the tournament machines for the big event that starts tomorrow afternoon. We have a groovin setup with everyone playing on p200mmx machines and 17" monitors. Observer machines running GLQuake courtesy of NEC, so many prizes, etc etc.
We will be up ALL night tonight making hot ethernet, so if you are up late tonight just chillin in Dallas and need something to do, head on down to the Infomart and help our asses!
I have some templates setup etc and will be posting information on who is winning the brackets etc, as well as posting a few demos as they happen for people to check out who arent lucky enough to be here. Also I have a digital camera and will take a few choice shots of stuff you may want to see. Or I can just post porn.. your choice.
New VQuake
Thanks Blue for the word that a new version of VQuake has been released for all the old school V1000 chipset users like to use.
This VQuake release is a small upgrade. Everything in whatever previous readme you have is probably still true. This release simply adds one new setting.
r_surfacelookup (default 1, enabled)
Disabling r_surfacelookup will make the CPU perform the 8 to 16 bit conversion step for texture maps instead of the Verite. On faster CPUs this can increase performance. Results also depend on what resolution you choose. In other words, your mileage may vary.
Daikatana Shot
Yet another screenshot of Daikatana has been released on OGR. I spoke with John Romero briefly about these shots earlier, and although they look great, they dont even represent just how cool the game is looking now days. They are improving constantly.

QuakeWorld on MPLayer
Um, I guess we should congratulate MPlayer for purchasing a clue and supporting QuakeWorld on their online gaming service. Although I can't imagine what they can offer for Quake players that GameSpy + IRC already does, but I guess it's cool. -Blue's
T3 Nearing Completion!
The biggest, baddest, most intense online Clan tournament has narrowed the field down to the final 4! Here is the email I got, and you can bet that I'm gonna check out a couple of these matches personally. :)
The close to the largest clan tournament of the year is approaching, as T3 goes to semis and finals in two weeks. Over a hundred clans have been eliminated, and now only the very best of the best are remaining! T3 Semifinals and Finals will move to a best of 3 20 minute games, every match on DM3. Each game uses the standard tiebreaker rules. Two games will play on Saturday, and if needed the 3rd on Sunday. Starting time each day will be 8PM Eastern.
QTV hubs will be announced on #clanring in EFNet as they have been for the rest of the tourney. This tourney is completely unprecedented in size, competition, and coverage, so be sure to stop by one of the surely historic final matches. At http://t3.mpog.com you can find demos from every single match played so far, with individual scores, previews, and news. After each final match full coverage will be supplied with demos and interviews on the web page, so stay tuned into the greatest clan tourney of the year!

Quake2 Stuff
Just was checking out www.quake2.com and came across this interesting bit of traded email with John Carmack talking about network packets.
>While you are still massaging the protocol putting in the prediction I
>want to ask for a maxpacketsize parameter as a client variable. This
>would go alongside the RATE command as in QuakeWorld.
Actually, a maxpacket size is going to replace the rate command. Q2 sends out a fixed number of packets, so they are similar in functionality, but I am going to prioritize updates in the packets instead of dropping entire packets.
The connect problem should allready be fixed, as I now limit packets to 1.4k at all times instead of 8k. That was only possible because of some nice new changes in the signon process.
>What about if you have 269 players in the one room....
>Likely? No. But it _could_ happen.
>:-)
It will start losing updates to them, resulting in a lot of statues until the area quiets down.John Carmack
Hi Mom
Ok, havent done this one in a while.. so um, heya Mom. I love you etc etc. Oh, and tell John he's kinda cool too.

QuakeWorld v2.10 Released!
Yea, this happened yesterday, but I figure most people missed it late last night so it's today's headline and stuff. The QuakeWorld.net page has released a new version of QuakeWorld! Here is a quote from the page:
The new QuakeWorld clients only have a couple new features; the console command crosshair 2 give you a better looking red crosshair. You may check
the CRC values of the player and eyes models of other users on a server by typing users to get a list of users, and user id's on the server, then user <user id>
to see information about that user. The keys pmodel and emodel are the CRC values of their player and eyes models. The default player CRC value is
33168, the default eyes CRC value is 6967. If you plan to use the new Solaris clients, check out the readme file and note that an Ultra Sparc is
recommended for ideal performance.
Here is the new full install client. Head on over to www.quakeworld.net to grab all the other OS strains that you may want. Linux etc.
Clan Arena
The Rocket Arena page has been updated with a new server side patch that gives you support for team style rocket arena matches. There are now normal, competetion, and round robin modes with any crazy combination of players that you wish.
CGW Article
The CGW guys came through Dallas a little while ago making all the major stops to check out our little 3D Gaming Mecca. They posted an article talking about the experience.

Hexen2 Patch
The boys at Raven have been hard at work to keep support for Hexen2 going. They have released this patch. (6 megs) which is apparently the largest patch ever or something like that. Check out the Activision Hexen2 page for info on just what has been changed in this patch.
Speaking of Hexen2, there is a big time giveaway going on over at www.hexenworld.com via Mr. Phoebus.
You guys have been good to me, and I sincerely appreciate it. In the spirit of my immense gratitude, high regards, and great plans for the future, I have some small tokens of appreciation to give back to at least a few of you. These are the cool items I have left over from my visit to Activision last month:
Eight Hexen II posters.
One Chronicle of Deeds book.
Four huge display boxes.
One small counter display stand.
I even have one huge Scourge of Armagon display box.
All of which I want to give away to you guys on a first-respond, first-served basis, free of charge. Just be the first however many to email me with one paragraph telling me briefly about yourself, how you came upon the Hexen cycle of games, perhaps what you'd like to see in the future, and be sure to include your postal address. While they last I will send you one of the prizes in the order I just listed them, ASAP. Better hurry though, because as you can see, supplies are definitely limited, and that's all I have, folks. :-)

.plan Wagon
Quite a few happy .planners lately, dig it:
implemented input fields using Kevin's newer, prettier box characters
- finished up multitexture support today
- got new drivers from NEC/PowerVR/Videologic that I still need to test, after I test them I'll point interested parties to a URL where it can be downloaded
- started sifting through the bug database...joy
- worked with James Barnes solving some DirectInput issues. We now support the other 23 AUX buttons that DirectInput specs, cleaned out some cruft, and added support for a vertical (up/down) axis that can be controlled by an input device.Over the weekend Michael Gold from SGI was here helping us bring Quake2 up on our shiny new R10K O2. We managed to get it up and running TIMEDEMOs pretty reliably, but there is still a lot of tweaking that needs to be done. All in all not bad for about 14 hours of work (Michael worked only worked on it on Saturday).
And through all this I've been fighting back problems and the plague. I know, wah wah wah, quit yer whining....

Half-Life CD Out
The CD that the Valve guys were talking about that contains just a buttload of information on the development and all that other good stuff is now out in stores. Stop by your local Electronics Boutique and grab one, supplies are limited. Here is a quote from the Sierra page:

Then the Half-Life Preliminary Findings CD is just what you need. Check in at participating Electronics Boutiques and Best Buy locations Halloween Week (Oct 27-31) and ask for your FREE Half-Life Preview CD. Limited to supplies on hand. If you miss getting your hands on one, keep your eyes peeled here for portions of the demo available for download. "
Ranger Gone..
Ok, I was actually here around 9.30am but we finally changed the office domain here, and as always things went super smooth (not) so uh, here is an update hours late. heh.. Looks like there is a possibility that Clan Ranger's big Quake Movie project, RGB3 may not ever make it into the public eye. Here is a quote from the page. (Thanks Blue)
"RGB3 is a subject of woe to us all. We lost a member who was a large part of its production. He still promises to finish this project but since we are not part of its completion we cannot consider it a Ranger movie. This is not to say that we will never make a movie again - but at this time we are not heading in that direction. We want to play and play we will."
Quake2 Stuff
Quite a few things going around this morning concerning Quake2.
"Instead of the usual kill them all and let God sort them out, there was more "find really big and expensive things and break them."
Just wanted to express how well the sound mix went in LA. Sound Deluxe Media Labs is the SHIT when it comes to sound engineering and music. Tom, Bill, Greg, Brian, Jeff and Scott are a very talented and very dedicated and hard working bunch of guys. They've gone the extra mile for us here at id and I applaud their work. My intro animation has been transformed via their magic into the best game intro I've ever seen. Kevin's idea to tell the story through a series of news broadcast during the title intro was brilliant and Adrian's insistence that we base our theme music on Conan rather than Star Trek is dead-on what id's about: kickin' some ass. The intro and end game flic will not only be the best cinematics seen in an id game, they will with the addition of Sound Deluxe's stuff establish a new standard for games to emulate. No words can express how cool the intro and end game animation turned out. Each and everyone of you all will dig it. Short, to the point and in your face, these animations tell a story while jogging along with you during the game experience and in no way block your view or stop the flow.
<snip>
As you may have noticed id games have never included cinematics. Our philosophy regarding this has been that if something didn't directly add to game play it didn't need to be in the product. Sure, movies are nice to watch, but we've never found a need to illustrate the plot of our games with anything more than a few lines of text. Then here comes Paul Steed with the grand idea that id games should include cinematics. That we should give our audience something to drool over the first time they play the game. There should be something to look forward to when you finish the game. Crazy. But sure, go ahead Paul. Toss something together and maybe it'll make it into the game.
Well, today we got to see what a guy like Paul can do in his limited spare time with "antiquated" rendering packages and a lot of hard work. From first to last frame this movie has the hairs on the back of your neck raised. It's that fucking cool.
Quake II is going to be the best product id has ever shipped. And now we have the best intro I've ever seen to start the whole thing up.
The Intro:
Yes, Steed's intro is The Shit. Sound and music make all the difference, and in conjunction with the video work, the complete intro is truly a sight to behold. I want a copy on DVD.
RBR In The Hizouse
AVault has done a nice article profiling one of the coolest new game companies in the industry. (The game these guys are working on will absolutely blow you away, just wait till you see some shots when they release them, WOW) Keep an eye on Rebel Boat Rocker guys, they will rock you.

Quake2 + Prediction = YES!
Something that was worrying a lot of people was with all the changes to the Quake architecture by John Carmack that last we heard there would be no client side prediction in the net code to be shipping with Quake2. Things have changed though, Big thanks to Redwood's page for the news, here is a quoted email from John Carmack over at id.
>Well, after all of that, I have some good news for you: I was working on the frame accurate movement for Q2 yesterday, and I found that after all of the architectural changes that were made for Q2, client side prediction is going to slide right in.
>Its going to be in the shipping product. It was only a question of when, and it turns out that it fits nicer than I thought it would.
>The net game in the retail box is still going to be fairly raw, but we should have the free expansion pak available on the net within a month of shipping.
