QuakeWorld 2.2!
OMG! It's out! The all new version of QuakeWorld with enhanced features galore.

You must download this version to play on the new servers.

Make sure to check out the server version when you connect to a server from GameSpy. There will be a period of a week or so while servers update.

Also check out www.quakeworld.net for more info and download sites.

Here is Zoid's .plan update:

May 16th/1998

I've released QuakeWorld 2.2. I've also added a couple new ports for this release: Sun Solaris x86 and Linux Alpha for servers. The new QuakeWorld should work through various broken routers that previous versions of QuakeWorld did not work with before.

QuakeWorld 2.2 is NOT COMPATIBLE with old versions (2.1 or earlier).

The changes focused on security, cheating and gameplay. QW2.2 plays as close as possible to the original Quake, but with the benefits of prediction. My beta testers were very excited about the changes, and I hope everyone will enjoy them.

Please note: Team Fortress 2.6 currently doesn't work with QW2.2. The Team Fortress team is aware of this and will be releasing a small patch for servers ASAP.

As always, QuakeWorld is an unsupported product. If you have any problems tho, you can report them to bugs@quakeworld.net .

The release packages:
qw22.exe QuakeWorld Client For Windows 95 and NT
qwsv22.zip QuakeWorld Server for Windows 95 and NT
qwcl2.20-i386-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz QuakeWorld Client for Linux i386
qwsv2.20-i386-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz QuakeWorld Server for Linux i386
qwsv2.20-axp-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz QuakeWorld Server for Linux Alpha
qwsv2.20-i386-sun-solaris2.5.1.tar.gz QuakeWorld Server for Sun Solaris x86
qwsv2.20-i386-unknown-bsdi3.0.tar.gz QuakeWorld Server for BSDI3.0 i386
qwsv2.20-sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1.tar.gz QuakeWorld Server for Sun Solaris (sparc)

Prey Shot
Got word from Lithium over at www.preyground.com that the www.3drealms.com website has posted a new "interactive" screenshot of Prey for you kids to play with. You have to have the plugin for your browser though of course. (The whole plugin download scheme with browsers currently sucks btw)

Tresspasser
OGR has posted a great Tresspasser article that you guys should dig on. Really informative etc with nifty looking screenshots that will make a 3D hardware vendor blush.

3D Article
There is an article posted on GameSpot that is also pretty interesting. It covers 8 different 3D cards (the most popular ones) and a bunch of web page links that help you get the most out of each card. Thanks Lanhdanan.

Seems my precautions yesterday didnt work :( I've become a big fan of driving to Fort Woth though every day. It's a swell way to waste about 3-4 hours of my day. Bleh, Man I dunno. I'm as dissapointed right now with the updates as you guys are.

Duke4 Shots
A couple of new screenshots of Duke4ever have popped up over at www.duke4.com for you guys to scope out. As always the shots. I'm currently getting some wacky errors on the website but at least Jobe told me they are new in email.

Quake Playoffs
Well, a couple of playoffs have been announced. Firstly the league I hold the most respect for, the Clanring Big12 league have finished up their regular season internet play and have announced the final teams who will be entering their playoff run. Secondly, PGL following in the footsteps of Clanring, but with the added bonus of mutated net code has announced the PGL finals will be held at E3 according to ZDNNews. -Blues

Jobs
Oops, goofed a bit with the first post. I have gotten word from both 3DRealms in Dallas that they are looking for a 3D Modeller / Animator dude. Ion Storm in Austin is looking for 3D Level designers. If you think you are good enough to fill 1 of these 2 positions and are willing to relocate you better check out those web pages. The 3DR model dude will get to hop right in on the Duke4ever project, not sure what the Ion Storm Austin guy gets to work on though.

Unreal Soon
Preparting for the coming release of Unreal Shareware on the net, Unreal.org has announced that they will have 3 Unreal servers online waiting for the big rush when it hits the net. While you are busy at home pullin yur pud waiting for the release, go check out what I hope is the final Game-Online preview of Unreal with a ton of new shots for you to check out and any bit of info that has not yet been released about the game.

KingPin
Xatrix Entertainment has revealed that they are not only working on that Quake2 Mission Pack people are waiting on, but also actually doing an entire new game based around the Quake2 engine that they licensed from id Software. Check out the Next-Gen article which reveals the info. Then, have a read of Ridah's .plan file who tells a bit about what he has to do with the project:

You may have seen the announcement that Xatrix is working on a Q2 engine game, set in the Al Capone era, tentatively labelled 'Kingpin'. This is what's responsible for keeping me away from Eraser the passed month, and no doubt over the next year or so.

I'll be responsible for bringing the game to life, through AI advances, and other gameplay additions. I've been watching any 1930's Gangsta movie I can get my hands on, but I'm sure there are more out there than I'm aware of. So if you have any good recommendations, please drop me a line.

Dementia Show
It's a womanly Daily Dementia today, and a great talk with Paul Rinde of GT/WizWorks about Deer Hunter, and how to get published by a company (if you're a game developer). Win98 Delayed
As many people suspected, all those software companies with their panties in a wad over Microsoft packaging IE4 with Windows98 have gotten the OS delayed. Neeto. Check out the article on CNNfn. -Blues

Sigh, just drove to Ft.Worth again this morning to regain access to my page. I've taken steps to assure that this wont happen again though. I apologize. This is just lame. Hopefully something will happen tonight to cheer you guys up though. :)

Happy birthday Ulf. I appreciate the offer of a Swedish penis enlarger. Amazing.. the same guys who can make proxies make those things.

btw, interesting note.. I've gotten 3 emails just today telling me that people are switching back to Quake1?
"Sorry, I thought Quake 2 would be much better than it was. RA2 is great, except Quake2 lost it's flair after the newness faded."
Wow. No, dont even think about emailing me saying Quake1 or Quake2 is better, just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

Q2 Mission Pack
There is yet another preview of Xatrix's official Quake2 Mission Pack that we shoudl be seeing in stores any day now over on AVault.

Bah
I just downloaded that 100meg zip MechCommander demo.. it had CRC errors. Neet huh? imagehlp.dll and leg90.pak are both corrupt. Now I'm pissy. Thought I'd post that on my page.

Quake3 Suggestions
OpenQuake has finished the first batch of technical suggestions for specific changes to the Q2/Q3 engine and game subsystem, which you will find here and an accompanying list of less sepcific "wishes", found here. John Carmack and John Cash have been notified. OpenQuake is currently seeking feedback from the community at large, and has set up a poll, so be invited to vote on any suggestion or wish that is of interest to you. The link to the voting pages, as well those to unfinished and discontinued suggestions, can be found here OpenQuake will keep you posted on further events relating to Q3suggest. Discussion is taking place on the mailing list, also linked at the location above.

John Romero Interview
Well, I've had a few questions on my mind concerning the Daikatana project and John Romero over at Ion Storm was more than happy to do an interview for me and answer a few of them. Check out my Romero interview, here be a bit of it:

Steve:
Deathmatch, how do you plan on handling 30+ weapons in deathmatch? Will all the weapons be available to players? This seems to be quite a task to get the balancing of all these weapons correct.

John:
There are 4 episode's worth of weapons and you can only use 6 per episode, not counting the Daikatana (which has a potential of 7 powers). Basically we have to balance four sets of weapons and it's very important that the balance is near perfect.

QuakeCon CPL Tourney July 23rd
The new CPL website has been launched. The immediate focus of this site will be our upcoming QuakeCon CPL event to take place on July 23 to July 26 in Dallas, Texas. This event will host one of the most sophisticated LAN setups ever developed for a gaming event of any type. Starting with a T-3 Internet connection available to everyone attending the event, courtesy of Verio. Followed by Cisco Catalyst 5000 switches and hubs to manage the entire LAN, courtesy of Exodus Communications. Culminating with redundant high-end servers, courtesy of VRGN.

Along with the official 1on1 tournament, the large attraction that I will be running is the 4on4 Quake1 Clan Tourney. With several members of the most prominent clans in Quake Land, its sure to be intense. I am a volunteer running the Clan tourney, why? So I can participate!

Speaking of LAN tourneys, NTF Gaming is running a $500 LAN Quake 1 tournament in Ithaca, NY, July 10th-12th. The event features nonstop overnight gaming, and registration is just opening so tons of slots are available. URL is www.gibbed.com/cornhell/

QuakeWorld v2.2
I've worked up a page for the new QuakeWorld when its released that will cator to people new to QW. Current QW players will have nothing really to play with aside from the new demo features, and a happy joy joy thought of no more cheaters. The page includes all the commands that someone who is living in the past and still playing NQ. Why switch then? All the new features, the lack of cheating, and all the new clans to play.

I've spoken to a couple of ClanRing officials who would like to see the top clans from the Big12 play the top clans from the QW QIL league. (nB vs U4 anyone?)

Unreal Hardware/Software
Unreal Nation has the scoop on what Tim Sweeney has to say concerning the work on the software renderer. Here's a bit of it:

We don't consider the time spent making Unreal run well in software rendering mode to be time wasted. On the contrary we think a good software renderer is crucial to our success. Look at all the great low-cost out now and coming out soon. Machines based on the new 300Mhz AMD K6-2 with 3D instructions are going to debut around $1,000 (and quickly drop below) and there are new Intel Celeron systems coming in the same price range (including ones with cpu cache).

None of these systems will come out of the box with the kind of 3D accelerator needed to outrun our software renderer but they all come with plenty of processing power, disk space and RAM to easily run Unreal very nicely. That means people can buy these under $1,000 systems and be running a cutting-edge game like Unreal as soon as they get their computer home.

If we had chosen the hardware-only route then none of these systems would be able to run our game without investing at least another 15-25% more money to buy a decent 3D accelerator. Maybe $150-$250 doesn't mean much to a hardcore gamer with $4,000 worth of gear but to someone buying a $900 computer it's a lot more money.

Speaking of which, there are a couple of MP3s for you guys to check out if you are so inclined over at The Village

Drakan
I cant even imagine why this preview is buried below on the Next-Gen pages. Check out the Drakan preview along with the great looking screenshots.

sIn
Scott Aldie over at Ritual made a rare .plan update to tell us just what he's up to with sIn.

I've been busy working on interface / 2D things for Sin. We are now finalizing the way the interface is going to work. I've taken the layout commands from Quake2 and added about 50 new features. This will let anyone create custom interfaces for the game menus and the HUD.

The layout commands are kind of like a primitive form of HTML, so if you can make a webpage, you probably can create a Sin menu or HUD. One of the cool things is that everytime I add a new command for the HUD, it can also be used on the in-game consoles. This lets you put things like the player's health or name on a 3D screen in the game.

Mech Commander
Gotta love this. Always looking to set new standards, the Mech Commander demo weighs in at over 100 megs. They of course dont suggest downloading it but instead going out to buy your local gaming magazine and snag a copy from the CD. -Ant

Woah
I'll be damned, an actual working connection to my website. Well, got an interview done and formatted etc ready for posting with John Romero which I'll slap up with tomorrow mornings update. Um, I'll run down a few of the more important things for today. Consider it a wasted 3 days though. Bleh

I'm not going to attempt to cover 3 days of news. We'll just have a fresh start early tomorrow morning huh kids?

Unreal Soon?!
Oh god.. can you feel it? Check out this notice that was sent out by Epic / GT:

The wait is almost over. Unreal is about to become a reality. Here's the plan. As soon as the game is finished, the development team is going to spend a few days fine-tuning a demo version that we can post on the Internet. We are currently planning to offer the demo a few days before the game gets to stores. Rest assured that we will let you know the moment Unreal goes "gold" (a.k.a. finished). In the meantime, to whet your appetite and assure you that the wait has been well worth it, check out our latest video files at

Impel Stuff
Well, it looks like the Impel Mission Pack story stuff had a lot more to it than I originally thought. I apologize to the publisher for quickly bashing them without hearing the entire story. One becomes pessimistic towards stuff like this after witnessing several other publisher business practices. Here is a link for you to check out. Also, a couple of anonymous sources enlightened me that not all small publishers are scum. :)
- John Callaham's page covering the events with statements from both sides.

.plan Wagon
This one has to be a personal favorite that Brian Hook points out: from reading John Clark of Crack.com's CGDC report.

"I was very impressed by what they are doing and it is more advanced than what anyone else is doing including id." - J. Clark

Except that Mr. Clark has no clue what we're doing here, and thus does not have sufficient data to make such a judgment.

That said, I'm really annoyed that I didn't manage to see the Messiah stuff, because all I hear are good things. I did get a chance to meet Dave Perry, and he seems like a personable individual -- AND he drivers an HMS Viper, so that scores many points :-)

Using Mr. Clarks logic, I could say the Duke Nukem engine is better than what id is working on. How can I say that? Because since I havent seen what they are doing! Duke must be better!

I traded a few emails with the GameSlice "Editor in Chief" and he would like everyone to know that I was incorect about my statement saying They took back the story calling Sin delayed. A few other pages attacked this statement as being misinformed and untrue, but GameSlice stands by their statements. Ritual never made a statement contrary to the GameSlice article either.
