Genocide 3
It's about to start! the largest QuakeWorld clan tournament ever, Genocide3. Asus just sent out the email to all the clans with the news that round 1 begins on February 3rd with round1. If you signed up for the tournament you better check out the homepage.
TeamFortress v2.7
A new version of Team Fortress has been released to address the sentry gun cheat that has been running a bit rampant on the servers recently. Not sure what else has been fixed though. I'll take a wild guess though, minor bug fixes?
QERadiant
Yet another version of QERadiant has been released for you QE4 fans. Up to v0.38 now.
Rocket Arena for Q2
A new version of the beloved Rocket Arena patch for Quake2 has been released, here is the email I got from crt:
A new version of the Rocket Arena 2 server has been released on the Rocket Arena page:
http://www.planetquake.com/servers/arena
It includes both Win32 and Linux versions and is available from: http://www.cdrom.com/pub/idgames2/planetquake/servers/arena/ra2096sv.zip
The new version addresses all current stability issues, and adds an awesome configuration system for server operators.
This will most likely be the last Rocket Arena 2 release before the point release code comes out. During that time we will work on adding tons of features for observers and players. In addition, we have tremendous crew of map makers hard at work on the first Rocket Arena 2 map pak. All of them are WELL known mappers and they are making some awesome stuff for RA2.
The Ultimate Flattery
Ok, now this is just plain crazy, apparently the guys over at LinQuake got bored enough to actually compose an mp3 "theme song" if you will for my page which I am obligated to post. It's actually very good and I'll have to find a good permanent home for this file for people to enjoy in the future. (Shift click to download it)
Thanks a million guys, we got a great laugh here at the apt. :)

The Rebuttal
As many people are aware, Gamers Extreme, a company that Dennis Fong (Thresh) is a part owner of, is heavily involved with the running of the PGL tournament which is coming to a conclusion this weekend up at GameWorks in Seattle. There has been an article floating around the net recently calling for Thresh to "step down" pointing out a number of issues which concern "GhostGamer" in running a fair / legal tournament. Well, there is a rebuttal to this posted on PlanetQuake.
Quake2 Modeler
David Kruse has released his own Quake2 model editor that is based on the Meddle code. He calls it studioMDx and says that he will continue working on it and releasing future versions for all of us to play with. It already boasts a number of nice features worth checking out.
Bot Crazy
The Q2 Bot Epidemic has complete comprehensive reviews on the Eraser Bot v0.4a and the C.R.Bot v0.97. It also has extensive online help and setup guides for the bots. Check it out at: http://www.quake2.com/epidemic/

What all the homeys are sayin:
3dfx and Sega
We all remember the deal falling out between Sega and 3dfx a while back, well lawsuits have been filed, etc etc. The 3dfx website has been updated with this little bit of info: -Quake2.com
3Dfx Interactive, Inc. (Nasdaq:TDFX) today announced that on January 9, 1998, the Superior Court for Santa Clara County entered an injunction ordering Sega to return to 3Dfx Interactive, and prohibiting Sega from using or disclosing, 3Dfx Interactive trade secrets and confidential information which had been shared with Sega pursuant to the Development Agreement between 3Dfx Interactive and Sega which Sega terminated without cause in July 1997. The January 9th injunction formalizes an injunction that was originally filed by the Court on December 22, 1997. 3Dfx Interactive filed suit against Sega Enterprises, Ltd. and Sega of America, as well as NEC Corporation and VideoLogic Group, Plc. for claims arising out of Sega's termination of the agreement to use 3Dfx's chipset in Sega's next generation video game console. 3Dfx Interactive, a publicly traded company (Nasdaq: TDFX), develops high performance, cost-effective 3D media processors, software and related technology that are designed to enable a highly immersive, interactive and realistic 3D experience across interactive electronic entertainment platforms personal computers, coin-operated arcade systems and location-based entertainment ("LBE"). Current 3Dfx Interactive products include the Voodoo family of accelerator chipsets, Voodoo 2 Graphics, Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo Rush. Visit the company on the web at http://www.3dfx.com.

.plan Wagon
Zoid has made an update to his .plan talking about some Linux Quake2 server stuff:
rootshell.com has posted an exploit for Quake2 under Linux. This exploit was talked about on the buqtraq list a day or two ago.
I've known about this one due to loading shared libs. I forgot to specifically mention in the readme that Quake2 should not be setuid. If you want to use the ref_soft and ref_gl renderers, you should run Quake2 as root. Don't make the binary setuid. You can only run both those renderers at the console only, so being root isn't that much of an issue. The X11 render doesn't need any root permissions (if /dev/dsp is writable by others for sound).
The dedicated server mode (+set dedicated 1) doesn't need to be root either.
I will look at solutions to this problem in the next release. Problems such as root requirements for games has been sort of a sore spot in Linux for a number of years now. This is one of the goals that GGI is targetting to fix. I plan on supporting a ref_ggi in the near future.
Brian Hook has made a pair of .plan updates talking about his um, strong opinions on Boot Magazine and a couple of articles contained in this months issue.
The RBR .plan wagon is back online, Both Landon and Billy have both made .plan updates to celebrate. :)

Happy B-day Momma
Hey mom. Happy birthday lady. I'm a crappy son who forgot to bring your phone # with me to LA and didnt call. Now the whole world knows. I hope you don't trade me in for canned goods or something. :(
Quake2 Stuff
Oh my goodness, I'm actually home again and don't have any trips planned for the next month! Could it be? I know.. this is freaky, there is an actual possibility that the page will be updated regularly again. In fact, um.. I think it's my job or something. I'm home, back from the many trips, and uh.. get ready for a ride. Weekly sections are resuming, news is resuming, hi. Oh, don't forget to keep an eye on the sCary Express version of this page. Much lower bandwidth, I'll keep prettying it up.
All that is Quake2:
3D Card Chart
Tom's Hardware, a page you should all have bookmarked, has posted several charts which should help you in purchasing a 3D card. It pretty much just tells you to buy a 3dfx or possibly a RIVA128, but still it's interesting. :) It shows the relation between CPU speed, 3d card, and fps.
Speaking of 3D cards
Pre order a VooDoo2! Electronics Boutique is now taking pre-orders for the Diamond Monster3D 2 which features the VooDoo2 chipset. I'm gonna head on over there myself to order one. -Redwood's.
Eraser Bot
Well, this was released a couple of days ago while I wasn't around, but I thought it was well worth mentioning. The Eraser Bot, by far the most impressive Quake2 bot I know of has hit version 0.4a now. Just grab a copy of the self installer from the homepage of Team Impact.
Holy Wars
A new version of the Quake2 mod, Holy wars has been released. They are up to version 1.5 now. I've played this mod a bit a while ago and it's a pretty cool change of pace.
Quake2 Utils
A few utils to enhance your Quake2 experience:
Quake 1 Stuff
A few mods are still being released for Quake "classic"
Interviews
Got a bunch of interviews for you people to read:
Little side note, kolinahr has posted a profile of top interviews being posted on the net. His top 10 actually, with John Romero of course at the top being the most interviewed man in the world or something. heh

Whew, I've been flying all over the damn place recently, a trip to DC one weekend, and LA the next. I was actually going to be flying to Seattle for this next coming weekend, but figured I better not and hang around to actually update this damn page eh? I'll try to finish up the http://scary.vrgames.net/fast.html pages tonight, and also the server side include stuff with QuakeFinger might actually be fixed finally soon. I'm home! This time for more than 2-3 days! w0000.

T3 Finals go to DeathRow
Well, as I mentioned before I left on Thursday morning, VRGN was nice enough to fly me out to witness the T3 Finals match between U4 and DeathRow held at SlamSite.. I'll have a full writeup on the game as I saw it when I return and posted here as well as a bit more technical look at the page posted on CSN. Just a quick impression though is that U4 and DR were much more evenly matched than was anticipated by some. I felt that the turning point was the 2nd game 2nd or 3rd pent spawn where Thresh picked off a pair of U4 players. The match could have gone either way at that point, which if U4 had gotten that pent, they would have walked away champions winning 2 straight matches in a sweep. Hell though, that's what makes it so exciting eh? Ok, here is what everyone has been itching for, Demos from all the players.

Guess what?
Heading off to LA in the morning for the T3 VRGN SlamSite finals thingie. Now, I know these guys have a net connection, so thankfully I'll be able to update, unlike DCCON.
Oh, and wanna know a secret? It's actually 12.32am and I'm not changing the date in the header, teehee.
Bored?
I'm goofing around with the new page setup at http://scary.vrgames.net/fast.html if you feel like lookin at it. Yea, links broken, etc etc.. but hey, don't email me about it! Oh, and yea.. the fast pages means that the weekly sections will be making a return. We'll just start it fresh next week.
3D Roundup
Tom's Hardware page, an invaluable source for anyone looking to buy computer hardware has been updated with a great look at 3D cards that people may be looking at buying. -VooDoo
ClanRing Mod
I see on Blue's that a new version of the #1 competetion mod for Quake, the ClanRing mod has been updated. This is the same mod that will be being used at the upcoming T3 finals to be held on Friday / Saturday.
Slamsite VRGN T3 Finals -Updated
It's coming.. the T3 finals, the face off between Clan U4 and DeathRow. Check out the participants page also.
SlamSite, a leader in location-based multi-player gaming centers, today announced that VRGN has agreed to co-host the T3 Tournament. Sponsored by NetPower, LogiTech and 3DFX, the T3 national finals will be held live at SlamSite's Mega Center in The City of Industry, California (near Los Angeles). The 2 finalist Clans (made up of four players each) will compete on January 24th at 10:00am. <snip>
I was speaking with Pat Carmichael of VRGN and he brought to my attention that there will in fact be a 1on1 as well as a clan tournament hosted at SlamSite during the weekend events. This of course in addition to the big T3 Final match. I will be setting up as many QTV connections as I can at the event.
CSN etc. -Updated
The Cyber Sports Network page is updating again, with demos of the Thresh / DMann 7 to 5 squeaker on DM4. There is also a list of the small group of players who get to play on the LAN for the PGL victory.
Also, speaking of those gaming leagues, Cyberathlete RI-X is being featured in a national ad campaign by Micron. Just pick up some of your favorite gaming magazines to see a photo of RI-X and a link to www.cyberathlete.com
I will be sending out a couple of articles to CSN while I'm at the T3 finals to keep everyone updated on what's going on over in LA. (Flying out to LA yet again tomorrow)
Since so many people have requested it, here is Thresh's POV during the PGL semifinals.
Quake2 Stuff -Updated
All the stuff that is Quake2:
VooDoo2 Stuff
Well, 2 companies now have announced that they will be shipping VooDoo2 chipset based 3D accelerators in the near future. The latest being Orchid, who were pretty much first out the door with their original Righteous 3D a while back.
Speaking of Tournies
The Genocide3 Tournament looks like it will indeed be the largest and best QuakeWorld Clan tournament ever assembled. Several of the "old school" Netquake clans have made the transition to QuakeWorld for the big tourney including Clan Postal as well as Deathrow.
A look at g.o.d.
I just spotted this huge article on GameSlice (10 pages worth) talking about all the implications of Mike Wilson's new publishing company, including interviews with: Ion Storm, 3D Realms; Raven, Software; GT Interactive, Terminal Reality, Ritual Entertainment, PopTop Software, and a few others.
Cool pics
Paul Steed has sent out a couple of new windows backgrounds for everyone to use. (Remember those christmas ones?) Well these are the straight Quake2 versions. 800x600 as well as 1280x1024.
Quake2 at 320x200
Yea, this kinda belongs in the "Quake2 Stuff" section, but I thought it was cool enough for it's own headline. The Epicenter guys, who recently released the patch to increase the speed of Linux Quake2 has now put out a patch for all you Win95 / NT users.

.plan Wagon
Well, just about everyone has updated their .plan file recently. (Speaking of which, man I hope we can get that QuakeFinger insert working here soon, it's kind of a bummer not having it at the top of the page)
Back! Finally..
Well, as I'm sure you guys noticed, there happened to be no net connection at DCCON for me to or Redwood to update from. We got home last night, and I've spent most of today driving around getting stuff so that I can get online. I'm chillin at giggler's apartment right now. (heh, poor guy) using his phone line and modem, while using Sabian's monitor and phone cord. Also had to run to buy a new serial cable and a couple of other things at Office Max. All this scrambling and now here I sit on an incredibly bad ISP so that possibly we can have a news update this evening.
so.... as you read this paragraph, I am at my computer sorting through the events of the weekend etc and working on an update for you puds.
And hey! I missed you guys... :)
