KingPin [9:35pm]
I just finished checking out the big article on KingPin in the latest PCGamer and here ya go another preview pops up over at UGN3D that is worth checking out too. For those of you who really looked at Redneck Rampage I'm sure you noticed it was not just a "theme product" but offered some damn good quality. Xatrix was also behind one of the Quake2 Mission Packs.

SouthPark [9:35pm]
Saw this one on VE, PC.IGN has posted a preview of the SouthPark 3D shooter game I'm sure all of you guys are just dying for. The SouthPark game is actually the cover story in the January PCGamer to boot. One bummer, there are no real guns! The publisher would have none of it. They gotta use stuff like chicken cannons etc instead.

Messiah Shots [12:35pm]
Messiah Universe just got, and let out some new Screen Shots of the game. Four of them to be exact of Bob chilling on his computer, and a few bloody action scenes.

K6-3 [12:35pm]
Still wanna know more about that K6-3? Anand done got famous and was mentioned on ZDNet recently for being the first guy out the gate with public information on the chip. Have a look at part2 of his feature now that just went online:

The K6-3 is still placed far enough from the Celeron A and the Pentium II to be considered a weak gaming performer with the Riva TNT. The TNT performance has been improved greatly over the K6-2 400, simply due to the increased L2 cache speed, which the TNT benefits greatly from as you can see by the performance difference between the cacheless Celeron 300 and the Celeron 300A equipped with 128KB of L2 cache running at clock speed. The K6-3 400 scores a smooth 13 fps more than the K6-2 400 for no reason other than its L2 cache, as the K6-3 core is identical to the K6-2 400 CXT's core in every way, including FPU performance.

3dfx Interview [12:35pm]
Saw this one on VE, Steve Schick who I guess recently left 3dfx did this interview with Game Asylum:

Game Asylum - 3Dfx has never really been the lagger before; but it will be almost a year late on the 32-bit color bandwagon... What besides Voodoo3 do you have to tide us over?

Steve Schick - I guess we feel differently. We're proud of our products and how they perform on real games. We'll introduce new features when we can implement them the way we think they should be done and when they don't come as a compromise to overall performance.

ClanWar Beta [12:35pm]
For those of you who are upset that there was no Quake2 Team Fortress mod, maybe this will suit your fancy. Premonition has released the first public beta of ClanWar. Sounds pretty interesting with the whole character class thing going on etc. Have a look.

Thanks for all the "gifts" you guys mailed out last night. A guy has to abuse the "perks" of running a website once in a while right? Keeps it fun!

Christmas! [6:45pm]
So, it's x-mas evening.. and you are sitting there playing with your new toys and I bet you were wondring "Gee, what did Steve get for Christmas?" right? Well, instead of dwelling on what I did get, lets dwell on what I wish I got.

1. Jennifer Love Hewitt, naked, and in "Heterosexual code red"
2. Quake3: Arena released. Those punks at PCGamer are playing it as you read this.
3. A dollar for every time someone emailed me asking to link their page, and forgot to include the URL.
4. A stable computer.
5. A stable internet connection? No.. that's asking too much.
6. A blowjob. Doesnt matter who from, just remember: A BJ, is a BJ, is a BJ.
7. Another dollar for every time someone confuses a goofy kid who openly discusses sexual desires with a sexist pig. Gee, because I say I enjoy good looking women and sex I must be a sexist pig huh?
8. Popcorn that doesnt stick in your teeth.
9. Someone make David Letterman funny like he was 5years ago.
10.Everyone who reads this page see Swingers so they know what the hell "You are so money" means.

I didnt get any of those. If you wanna email me pictures of naked chicks or something though to cheer me up feel free. There you have it. Hey Mom, Dad, John, Randy, everyone. Merry Christmas eh?

Levelord [12:15pm]
Check out what Richard Gray of Ritual Entertainment has to say in his new interview at RitNews

Q: What are some of the things that have changed that you most like about game design today as opposed to way back when Doom was koth? And what do you leastlike?

A: I most like the ever-increasing performance that the game platforms provide. Remember 386's? The shit we can do now is awesome, at least as far as the visual aspects of a game.

Quake Done Quick Lite [12:15pm]
I'm a goober, I didnt link this one yesterday. The guys who make you wonder why you even spend a month creating a level when they run through it in 12 seconds have put out another demo. It's Quake Done Quick

Picture the scene. Granny has come visiting for Christmas. And just as happened last year, she's proved she ownz you at CTF and Quake2 DM, and has now started boasting about her aptitude for Quake on Skill 0. "Little kids? They suck, dear..." Get revenge. Ask her how quickly she thinks she could complete the whole game, killing every monster and uncovering every secret along the way. Then show her Quake done 100% Quick lite, in which the QdQ team complete the task in under forty-three minutes. It'll make you feel better, honest...

X-Mas Poll [12:15pm]
Christmas = everyone gone and nothing happening. So.. what better way to spend the holiday than to check out the 3DN front page and help answer the question that has been on the mind of millions for generations. Who says "Ho ho ho" better? Santa Claus or Jabba The Hutt?

Hook on Katmai [12:15pm]
The daily GrandMaster B article has been updated as always. This time around Brian Hook talks about the Katmai CPU's from Intel and some of the possible motivations for the added instruction sets:

However, the "obvious" push from Intel is to make consumers more CPU dependent for performance.  The trend of pushing more and more stuff onto dedicated chips has got to make Intel really nervous, since you can get away with a decent AMD K6-2 300 w/ a TNT and get great performance.  And when hardware manufacturers start doing more stuff off-CPU, then you can get an even slower CPU (assuming, of course, that game developers just don't start leveraging the CPU in other ways, which is very likely).

Go do family stuff. If anything incredibly exciting happens I'll pop in for an update.

Merry Christmas [9:35pm]
Happy holidays and all that shit. You guys are so money.

Vampire [9:35pm]
Saw on Redwood's that the Nihilistic page has been updated with a press release for Vampire: Masquerade which is looking impressive as these screenshots show off. shot1 and shot2

The title, which is being developed by Nihilistic Software, is inspired by the well-known Vampire series of games from White Wolf Publishing. Vampire: The Masquerade is based on an original script and will tell an epic story of one vampire's (un) life throughout an eight hundred year time span.

Revolutionary technology, visually stunning graphics and a compelling story will draw players into  the World of Darkness where they will find intriguing characters, challenging puzzles, and  intense adventure.

Pat Hook Wallet Foundation [9:35pm]
As many of you may know, a good friend of mine Pat Hook of Ritual Entertainment is still clinging on to some VELCRO wallet he got in like the 6th grade and uses it to this day. If you are interested in donating a new wallet to Patrick for the holidays drop me a line. I'm guessing he would like a new VELCRO wallet. Maybe you guys can score one of those Puma wallets or something? Those things are fly.

Go Here & Worship [3:15pm]
The second coming is near. Can you feel it?

Heather Graham?
Rob Lowe?
Clint Howard? We love it already.
Also returning is Seth Green as Scott Evil and Robert Wagner as Number 2.

If you have not yet been subjected to the cinematic masterpiece that is Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery you are not complete. There is a hole in your soul, that only Austin Powers and Vanessa can fill!

Voodoo3 Info [3:15pm]
The Voodoo3.net website has been updated with a great informative Q&A session with Brian Bruning of 3dfx. Actual numbers are brought up as well as some interesting talk about framerate.

Voodoo 3 (at non-optimal speeds yet with early silicon) runs Quake 2 1600x1200 at ~35-40fps.   We're shooting for more but are very happy with the current results.  Quake 2 is not your standard game though.   We have many other titles running at 60fps with 1600x1200 mode.  And although Quake 2 supports 1600x1200, it wasn't really designed to run at that resolution.

AMD vs Intel [10:15am]
The generally entertaining cat fight between Thresh and Kenn has been updated with an Intel/AMD debate.

Objection, your honor (pssha), on the grounds of blatant speculation. If you wanna go there, from current reports over the 'Net, it looks like AMD's K7 is going to stomp all over your precious Katmai and make it cry home to mama. This monster is gonna have between 512k and 8MB of L2 cache, and what's more it's going to be running on a 200Mhz motherboard. Early tests at 500Mhz shows the K7 surpassing Katmai performance already, in both integer and floating point. If there's ever a processor ready to take on Quake III, then I'm betting this will be the one.

Messiah [10:15am]
The MessiahPress guys sent out an announcement that they are starting a new developers profile thing on their website going through each member of the "Team Ego" and doing a profile of all things. There are a few new screenshots there for you to check out as well.

New QERadiant w/Half-Life Support [10:15am]
Yup, a new version of QERadiant as well as a Half-Life plugin for those of you who dont dig on Worldcraft. Thanks to JazzBone's Half-Life Warehouse

Here is build 147 along with a copy of the Half-Life plugin. See the readme in the Half-Life plugin zip for instructions on getting it running. Tom informed me that the entity file is not complete yet but should be far enough along to work with. A temp web-site for information is at      hlplugin.html There is also a new build of the MGS plugin over at mgs it is very stable and very cool. See the readme for details on what this release contains. QERadiant Build 147 Half-Life plugin

System Shock2 [10:15am]
Billy over at VE got an email response from Scott Blinn of the System Shock2 team describing the technology behind the game a bit. Here's a clip:

Hardware only 16-bit engine - graphically, SS2 looks better than Thief did. We're full blown 16-bit. Just the fact of using the hardware bi-linear filtering helps with the visuals. Good looking translucent objects are another side effect. SS2 looks AMAZING on my TNT

New GLDoom [10:15am]
From Blue: The Official glDoom Homepage has version 0.94e of glDoom, described as a maintenance release fixing some problems that have popped up that are annoyances, but not show  stoppers.

Half-Life vs SIN [5:35pm]
What? You didnt see this one coming? Check out what GameCenter has to say when comparing these 2 games head to head. Just to spoil it for ya Half-Life won 4 out of 5 categories. Apparently GameCenter hates that WON Authentication stuff as well. Giving SIN the edge in multiplayer.

The final touch that nabs this category for the Half-Life design team is their implementation of a subtle point that evades most level builders: Put simply, the act is more exciting than its implementation. This translates into good gameplay most of the time, because someone finally has realized that leaping to safety is exciting, but repeatedly reloading a game because you failed to jump from the correct pixel to the other correct pixel is tedious. The relative give-or-take built into most of Half-Life's leaps means they know something the Sin team has yet to learn.

Anyone have an unlimited ISDN account in Dallas that pings under 100 to anywhere outside of Texas? UU.NET is still hosed for me and has been for a week now. It's about time for a new ISP.

Voodoo Review [7:55pm]
A new issue of the Voodoo Review is being sent out. You can find it online at VoodooMag now.

Screenshots [7:55pm]
Spent some more time fixing up the mini screenshots section. Mooched a few shots of select games (Duke4, Drakan, etc) to add some variety and fixed a couple of broken links. Tedious work is kinda fun if you dont mind the fact that it's tedious and it sucks. :)

Unreal 221 = January [2:15pm]
Well, I was in no rush to post this since its like, just an announcement of something that isnt coming out but what the heck. Timmy over at Epic updated the Unreal Tech page

Unreal 221 After Christmas

We're going to hold off on the upcoming 221 update until after Christmas.  A few minor issues remain and, with most of the team away or inaccessible for Christmas, testing has been going slowly.

Have a safe and happy holidays, everyone

Tribes in Stores [9:55am]
Following the announcement of Starsiege Tribes going gold last week one would suspect that you can find Starsiege Tribes in stores now. This is the case. Go find it, buy it, play it, love it.

Half-Life Patch Soon [9:55am]
Word on the street is that there will be a Half-Life network code update/patch.

Our next update should be out in a matter of days, and includes much stronger networking than the original code. We've also kept a very close eye on what the community reaction has been, and we're planning on addressing the key points in TF2. John and I tend to tease the HL guys by telling them that HL was in fact just a big net test for TF2 ;)
(...)
Teamplay support will be in before you can say abracadabra

Also, PlanetHalfLife is giving some good coverage of just what exactly is going on with the decision to lead everyone to believe TF2 would be a Half-Life add-on and then make an announcement that TF2 is a stand alone product now.

Wack Links [10:55am]
I know I know, when will I "revive" those other sections with some updates? Soon! I'm finally not getting hammered with email about them much anymore which is a good feeling. Pressure about something you do strictly for fun kinda kills the fun. Check out the wack ass links for today but be careful. Thanks to everyone that keeps on sending me new ones. :)

Q2 X-Mas Movie [9:55am]
Movie time! Here you go:

Hello, I'm from Clan Drooling Chickens, and we just completed a Quake 2 demo move called "The Night Before Quakemas."  Could you please post an announcement about the existence of this demo movie? There's been such a dearth of Q2 demo movies out there.   It'd be great to get the ball rolling with this one.

PGL Qualifying Open  [9:55am]
Word from the PGL guys is that it's time for qualifying for the next tournament. They are doing Quake2 for Action and StarCraft for strategy again this tourney. Got about $60,000 of cash to split up for the winners so go for it eh? I'm even signing up and I stink at Quake2. :)

Heretic2 Expansion Pack [9:55am]
I havent really mentioned this one much. Jake Simpson of Raven Software made a .plan update for those of you wondering what the plans are for a future add-on pack for Heretic2 are:

Heretic II EP. Well, it won't be out till after Christmas, probably not before the new year. The big problem is that Activision gives us an extra day off if we take off the time between the 25th and New Year, so you KNOW we all are. And so is QA. In which case its tough to get the game properly QA'd intime for the New Year. Sorry guys. We just have too much we want to get in there. We got all the new Aureal 2.0 A3D code, and I've got to hand it to them, it Kicks Ass..very nice. Now I'm waiting to see what the Creative guys are going to come up with in the case of EAX support.

OSP Q2 Tourney Mod [9:55am]
While I was gone over the weekend I was introduced to what is probably the best Tourney / DM mod for Quake2 ever written. The guys at OSP have put together the most feature packed yet simple to use "ClanRing Style" mod for Quake2 ever. If you are looking to run a Quake2 server for 1on1's and teamplay matches this is all you need. I'm talking built in stat tracking, html creation, tournament bracket creation, the works.

OSP Tourney DM is a server-side only mod designed to facilitate match play for tournaments, whether LAN-based or online. It also has an enhanced regular DM mode for relaxed warmups and informal play.

Rather than having different specific mods used for various aspects of tournament play (i.e. Battle/GX for team play, Duel for 1v1, and even id DM for FFA qualifiers), the tourney mod was designed specifically to handle these modes of play with all of their unique requirements with the configurability of Lithium.

I wanna say thanks to the guys at OSP for playing host to myself and Mike over the weekend and the tourney was a blast. :) Here are a few servers for you to check out the mod: (Thanks Blue for the purty table)

Yeah, panties have begun to wad up already in anticipation of Quake3 just a month or so away. I just put some on myself so I could wad them up too. I'm gonna have to recommend you guys go out and by Starsiege Tribes to keep yourself occupied in the mean time. I'm telling you guys the game is cool.

Oh, and lay off the TF2 guys. Feel free to give Sierra hell though. Remember when the TF guys announced a Quake2 version and then never said another word and left everyone hanging? You can thank Sierra for that one. Check out the PlanetCrap thread if you're still upset.

Redline Demo [5:45pm]
Here you go, another new 3D Action game for you to play with. Grab the demo that was just released over at AVault:

This demo includes two REDLINE multi-player arenas: KILLCAGE and TRIAGONIZER. In these two arenas you will have access to up to 11 vehicles, each with its own unique weapons and characteristics. You will also have access to 10 weapons you may use while on foot. The object of the multi-player game is to stomp, kill and frag as many of your opponents as possible. The final release version of Redline will offer both single player missions and numerous multi-player arenas.

This is a beta multiplayer only demo

Q3Test Date? [2:55pm]
The always informative Quake3 Messageboard has a post from Plague who listened to the Lilith & Eve Show (Thanks Hex) in which Paul Steed apparently revealed a few more details about Quake3. Here is Plague's summary:

A.) He and Kenneth Scott will probably release a female player model pack after Q3:A ships.
B.) Q3:A is very playable right now and a lot of fun but some technical issues such as security must be worked out before a test could be released.
C) That test could be released in a month or so at best

Rumors have been flying around about a Quake3 demo early next year since the target release date announced by aCtivision was 1st quarter 1999. A Q3Test in late January or early February would be ideal timing to get the full game out after some tweaking at the end of March.

NT4 SBLive! Drivers [11:45am]
Thanks to SharkyExtreme for the word on new drivers for SBLive! & NT4 owners. Grab them from the Creative FTP

Starsiege Tribes [9:25am]
I finally got a good look at Starsiege Tribes over the weekend and I was damn impressed. The actual DM play probably wont do much for you but fans of Team Fortress will go apeshit in love with this game. Here is some footage that Dynamix sent out. If you are into the teamplay thing for 3D Shooter games this is seriously worth taking a look at.

Team Fortress 2 [9:25am]
Of course since I mention TeamFortress above why not take a look at a new interview with Robin Walker of TF Software talking about the stand-alone sequel:

Q:The news has not been well-received by everyone. Is there a chance the decision will be reversed if the reaction is strong enough?

A: No. We are a bit taken aback by the the people who don't like the decision. The bottom line is that shipping TF2 as a standalone game means it will be a much better game than it could have been as an add-on.

In some ways, I think it's similar to when Valve made the decision to delay the release of Half-Life. Everyone got miffed. We said it'd make the game better. I think most people have agreed it was a good decision. I think the same thing will happen with this.

Robin is referring to the announcement that the plan for making TF2 an add-on for Half-Life has been ditched. You will have to pay full price for TF2 however you wont have to own Half-Life to play it. TF2 will still however be using the Half-Life tech as a base technology. Funny how the announcement wasnt made until after Half-Life had shipped and many people anticipating TF2 went out and bought Half-Life yes?

QuakeWorld v2.33-0005 [9:25am]
Check it out, another new version of QuakeWorld has been released over at QuakeWorld.net

The Net Works! [5:45pm]
Looks like UU.NET has improved a bit, I can now get to about 75% of the net now and email appears to be fully working here. At least I got to give the Jennifer Love Hewitt special on MTV today my full attention. I'm a better man for it. Looks like nothing incredibly exciting happened today. A few driver updates, and word on stuff that isnt coming out tomorrow is about it.

Shack Screenshot Index [5:45pm]
In my time of not being able to get out to the net I decided to finally get around to starting that screenshot index/archive of images that have appeared on these pages over the past years. There are of course resources for many more screenshots elsewhere, but what the hell.

Quake3 [2:15pm]
Brian Hook made another appearance on IRC addressing a few more of the questions that have cropped up since all the details to be released last week. (The more answers they give, the more questions they create eh?) Here's a snip and a link to the log on VE:

<bwh> Who, exactly, wants to play on a server with rules they're not familiar with?  Much like playing on a server with oddball maps or weird mods. People just to tend to gravitate towards "standard" servers, or the hardcore crowd goes to the oddball servers  with high run speeds, weird mods, missing weapons, whatever

<phunk> how are the quake 3 rule sets going to be different from the qw or q2 rules?
<bwh> phunk: that is not decided at this time

<bwh> Okay, there are other "controversial" things that will be configurable, like
knockback and things like that, but I don't think those will really be modified that much, maybe by mods or whatever, but doubtful by server ops or end users.
<bwh> Audible footsteps is another thing that would fall under that classification.
And character classes (if you set damage and speed modifiers for all character classes to the same thing, then effectively you will only have a single class)

<bwh> phunk: correct. One thing people say is "well, if people want to change things, they should make a mod". But what they don't realize is that Q2 mods did NOT let you change something fundamental like the run speed (for prediction reasons). Since there is now a client side code (DLL or something else), then you can predict correctly since the server and client can now communicate about parameters.

So that is all fine and dandy. I'm guessing the default rules will however be Quake3 rules yes? The big question are what are those settings? As Hook said however those arent completely decided on. My guess would be even if they were decided on, id isnt going to tell just yet since they may change during tweaking and they wanna avoid a flame-a-thon in the mean time.

K6-3 [12:15pm]
So you dig on that alternative lifestyle and dont use Intel CPU's eh? You noticing that the K6-2 isnt quite up to snuff with the latest p2's cranking 504+mhz? This new K6-3 preview over at Anand's should make your day then:

Windows 98 has always been the Pentium II's domain in terms of overall performance simply because its L2 cache performance would increase with every clock increase, unlike the K6-2. With the L2 cache of the K6-3 being on-chip, Intel has been booted from the top of the charts, and replaced by the third generation K6 processor. At 350MHz, the K6-3 gives the Pentium II 450 and Celeron 450A a run for their money, at 400MHz AMD already has the fastest business processor, and at 450MHz, the K6-3 sees no competition at all. Even under Winstone 99, a benchmark that seems to perform better on Intel processors/chipsets, the K6-3 still comes out on top by a fairly large margin. An 8% performance differential exists between the K6-3 450 and a Pentium II 450 under Winstone 99, a difference that is expressed as a 12% gap under Winstone 98. The bottom line? The K6-3, clock for clock, is, without a doubt, faster than the Pentium II in business applications

3dfx Demo [12:15pm]
A new demo from the 3dfx guys has been posted on their website which gives you a good look at the difference between games running at 15/30/60fps and why you would want 60fps. Some cool split screen action even.

FAKK2 [12:15pm]
Word from Ritualistic is that FAKK2, the next project for Ritual Entertainment on the plate could possibly be a 3rd person POV action game. Ritual of course developed SIN which although bug ridden on initial release turned out pretty decent after some patching. The Ritualistic guys gathered this information from a recent visit to IRC by Levelord who likes to pop in once in a while to verbally abuse everyone :)

Speaking or Ritual & SIN, the SIN editing source code has been released as well. Ritualistic can cover you on that too if you are looking to do some editing.

Descent 4
With Descent3 just having made a net release only a month ago, word on Desent4 is already coming out of the wood works. The guys at Volition got the scoop:

Q: Why aren't you using the Descent 3 engine?
A: There are two reasons. We started on D4 in June, 1998 when the Descent 3 codebase was undergoing rapid change. This would have made it difficult to start adapting it for D4. The other thing is, we're adding some features that are quite different than Descent 3.

Q: Why did you start D4 so early? Why not wait until Descent 3 was completed?
A: We'd like to avoid the long delay between Descent releases. If a game takes 18-24 months to develop, you either have that long between releases, or you have to overlap development. We chose to overlap development.

New QIZMO
Another new version of QIZMO the QW Proxy has been released. The author is doing his darndest to please those anal retentive Americans by removing powerup timers, enemy location reports, and anything else the could possibly be abused. The enemy location report stuff was the big deal, you could basically tell whenever an enemy was around the corner.

New QW 2.33 Polyblend
A simple patch that has become a big favorite among many QW players. Suami's Polyblend patch for QuakeWorld which lets players who play QuakeWorld in software mode have the same advantage of clear vision underwater as the players who use GL. Grab the new version which works with the recent QuakeWorld v2.33 release

Unreal [7:25pm]
Tim Sweeny over at the Unreal Tech Page posted an update on Unreal v221

We're wrapping up the bug fixes and testing it internally now. It's near release, but it could take us 24-72 hours to go throught the final iterations of testing. The 221 patch just incorporates minor bug-fixes to 220 based on feedback from gamers; it doesn't contain any significant new features or optimizations
