SIN & A3D [12:24pm]
If you checked out Unreal with a 3D sound card then you'll know this is good news. Matt W. from Ritual posted to the HardCorps Messageboard that SIN will in fact support A3D. -Ritualistic

"A3d support is in, the demo patch will already have that. Dunno about EAX yet..."

GL Unreal TNT Marks [7:34am]
For those of you considering buying a TNT card. (I'm almost positive I want one) These benchmarks over at Riva3D of Unreal using the new GL driver should be of interest to you.

Here's a few preliminary OpenGL scores using the timedemo add-in for Unreal. These scores are on a K6-2 300 with 64 MB ram. Look for these scores to improve considerably with newer TNT drivers, a more Unreal specific OpenGL ICD from NVIDIA, and future updates from Epic. Also, I expect 3D Now! enhanced drivers will furthur boost framerates for K6-2 owners. The following scores are with high detail textures, high quality sound, and all effects turned on, and 32 bit color

SHOGO Shot [7:34am]
Just so I dont feel left out in the cold, here is a screenshot of SHOGO that Jason Hall of Monolith sent me a couple of days ago.

Screenshots [7:34am]
A few screenshots out there floating around. First off check out SharkyExtreme for a pair of shots of Blood2. Shot1, and Shot2. Then check out VoodooExtreme for another shot of SHOGO. Make sure and head on over to Processed News as well and check out the new Daikatana shots that he is posting.

GL Unreal [7:34am]
Billy posted a bit from the GL Unreal patch readme which addresses the big question of compatibility.

At this time there are only a couple of video cards that will run under OpenGL correctly.

The Rendition v2100 and v2200 should work fine with the included OpenGL driver. The Intel 740 chipset also runs well, however Intel has not made their drivers public as of 8/21/98. A beta version of their driver is expected to be released in the near future.

GL Unreal Patch [1:34am]
Redwood covered this better than I can. (I admit not following Unreal as much as I should have) "The Rendition page has the Unreal OpenGL Patch (278K). This is supposed to work great on Rendition V2x00 based cards and may work on Intel740 cards but Intel will be releasing new drivers shortly (this is all according to the readme by the way). The text doesnt make it clear whether you need the new drivers to even play it for the 740 or not. Riva 128 and Permedia 2 cards currently do not work because "Lack of the blend mode that Unreal uses for lighting. We are working toward a secondary lighting model to get these cards to run in OpenGL for Unreal." 3Dfx cards currently do not work in OpenGL mode either but you have Glide support so you weren't hurting anyway." Thanks Quanja for the initial word.

After gettin home from seeing Blade (nifty movie btw) played some Quake. (duh) and played in this pickup match. Check out the demo and chuckle at me cranking teamates more than ever. Highly recommended viewing though for some crazy lucky shots. I'll prolly slap this in next weeks batch of demos. Should have a lot of them.

Down Time [6:54pm]
Check it out, backbone our webserver sits on was down all day. Cool yes? Totally rad. I caught up on some sleep which was nice. :) I'm mooching news from everyone since I have no email while the webserver is down. Thanks to VE, Blue, Red, Cyrellis, etc etc.

GL Unreal [6:54pm]
OMG! It's actually going to be released according to Mark Rein of Epic.

The OpenGL driver is ready for release and we're working now to get it released later today (Friday) either on our site or Rendition's. Please watch this section for further announcements.

EverQuest Delay [6:54pm]
Sigh, first Daikatana and now EverQuest. Check out this article on GameSpot detailing the reasoning behind the recent announcement of a delay of EverQuest.

Reason To Live? [6:54pm]
Hah! and you thought it wouldnt get posted. Todays Reasons to Live have gone live for you kids to play with. Also, If *anyone* happened to save The monday_old.htm (Suckage Archives) on their hard drive by chance, if you could PLEASE email it to me I'd love you. The one that is currently online is missing about 75% and I overwrote my backup a couple of days ago not realizing it was missing. :(

Daikatana Shots [11:54pm]
Check out this new screenshot posted on Daikatana.com in the news section. Also head over to Processed News for another shot as well as a couple of more shots promised in the next couple of days.

Rainbow SIX Out [6:54pm]
Word from the boys over at Rainbow SIX Retreat is that you can find the full game on shelves on at a number of different stores by now. The time between a game going gold and you being to buy it on the shelves seems to get shorter and shorter.

New KALI [6:54pm]
From Blue: "Version 1.53 of Kali has been released on Kali's FTP Site. The new release offers StarCraft 1.02 support and a GameList command that will retrieve a list of games a user has installed on their system (you can choose to block this)"

GLDoom [6:54pm]
The GLDoom page has been updated with a status report from Bruce Lewis

I'm looking at making it possible for glDoom to play against the original Doom programs over network play using IPX. It doesn't look that hard to do. It may not show up in the code for a while, though.

Quake2 v3.18 Beta [11:54pm]
The Q2 v3.18 Beta patch It's out, here is John Cash's .plan update:

Quake2 version 3.18 beta released --- > It is at q2_318_beta.exe. --- > Please read the file 3.18_Changes.txt contained within this self-extracting zip file for details about the release.

S3 vs 3DFX [8:34pm]
A new article has shown up on GameCenter which asks the question a lot of people have already been asking.

The graphics chip market is tough enough; throw in concerns from nervous investors, and things can get downright brutal. Case in point: S3 and 3Dfx, both desperately trying to bolster their depressed stock prices, have waged a public relations war in the past couple weeks over some disputed benchmark results.

On August 10, Mercury Research, a consulting firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona, put out a press release announcing performance rankings for the latest graphics chips, just like it does every quarter. According to the results, 3Dfx's Voodoo Banshee was the fastest on the synthetic benchmark 3D WinBench 98, while S3's Savage3D earned top score using the benchmark modes of the games Turok and Incoming.

Page Stuff [5:14pm]
UGO is bugging me for a 1 paragraph sentence summarizing what this page is all about. Feel free to email me some ideas. I sure as hell don't know how to describe these ramblings. :) Also, while I'm at it if someone wants to make a 486x60 ad banner (9k max) for my page um, I'll send Wieder over to your place for a little "private massage" action.

Warzone: 2100 [5:23pm]
Wow, you must check out this preview of Warzone: 2100 over at Gamers Alliance. It looks totally cool.

Pumpkin Studio, based in the UK, is currently developing a VERY good looking new Real-time Strategy 3D Action game by the name of Warzone 2100. The game will be published by Eidos Interactive worldwide for the PC CD-ROM and Sony Playstation, and will support 3D Graphics accelerators.

Daikatana Delay Update [5:23pm]
Billy ran across this press release over at Yahoo which mentions Daikatana being pushed back to Eidos's 4th quarter in their financial year. This equates to January - March of 1999. Thanks Darren.

However, two games have been re-scheduled by Eidos: Daikatana, ION Storm's second title, which was due for release in November, will now be released in the fourth quarter; and, Omikron is being put back to summer 1999. The Board believes that the rescheduling of these games will not have a material impact upon prospects for the current fiscal year.

TombRaider 3 Shots [5:13pm]
From GamePen: "While some would like to think the new edition of Tomb Raider means only more outfits, there's a whole lot more in store. New vehicles, the ability to choose which order levels are played, new moves for Lara and an improved AI for the enemies... and of course, slicker graphics as you can see here"

New CPUs [3:43pm]
Check out the news.com article which mentions a pair of new Celeron CPUs from Intel, along with the new p2-450 and the new AMD K6-350.

Daikatana Shots [1:53pm]
Just got word that the Game-Interviews chat with John Romero features 4 new screenshots of Daikatana that you guys should check out. Also, here is word from Daikatana.com about the movie that they posted earlier: -3DAGamers

The first version of it was actually released last Monday, but I found today the zip file had a CRC error, and reported it to Ion Storm. Just got a reply from Bill Nadalini that the above file is now ok, so there ya go :)  [note: it's not new footage, just a smaller version of the 320x240 movie released last Friday]

Wieder Interview [1:53pm]
Check it out, Charlie Wiederhold, (who needs to buy soda *cough* on his way home tonight *cough*) is interviewed about SIN at Outpost21:

What are the best features of Sin?

Well, we hope that little feature called "fun" is the best part of Sin. :) There really are too many features in Sin to list, but a quick rundown that pretty much everyone already knows about anyways:

- 16 bit color in hardware and software

- Extremely powerful scripting language that powers everything in the Sin levels from cinematics, to AI, to objects in the world moving around.

- A bone system on the characters that allows you to attach anything to them (guns, hats, etc) to any of the bones. You can even have a person walk over, pick up a barrel, and throw it at you.

- Location based damage. Shoot a guy in the head, he goes down quicker than if you were to shoot him in the feet.

- Damage skins that reflect the areas you are actually shooting. No longer will you shoot a guy in the foot and have his chest go bloody.

Weekly Links [1:53pm]
Talk about a slow day today. Well, here are some funky links for you guys to browse around and see just how wonderful our world wide web really is.

Quake3: Arena [8:28am]

QUAKE III Arena's enhanced graphics engine displays realistic 3-D environments using advanced features such as curved surface rendering and high detail textures. QUAKE III Arena will amaze fans all over the world with visual features such as moody, atmospheric use of fog and spectacular lighting.

Half-Life Movie [7:21am]
The guys over at Valveworld sent word of this new mpeg with footage from one of the venues in Half-Life which features a train ride. It's a 10meg download just featuring riding along the tracks and ducking under a couple of obstacles. Here's a screenshot for an idea while you download it. I've got a local copy here as well cuz I'm feeling nice.

Dial Up Networking [1:31pm]
BetaNews posted some news on the just released Dial-Up Networking 1.3 for Windows 95 and a DUN 40 bit encyption update for Windows 98. Just what the heck is DUN 40? It's a package that features 40 bit encyption, to fix a few security holes. Here's what MS has to say about it at Security Advisor.

Screenshots [3:41pm]
I'll just rip off Blue big time on this one, here is a quote from his page: "Gamer's Alliance has posted a new Gore screenshot giving another look at 4D Rulers' upcoming shooter. Also, there are more Shogo Shots than one can keep track of surfacing, there's one from yesterday on Processed News where he promises more to come on a daily basis, also Billy has posting a Shogo shot a day for a while himself, and OGR has posted seven new Shogo screenshots"

HardWar Demo [1:31pm]
A playable demo of HardWar has been released. Check out the Gremlin Interactive page for downloads. -Blues

Heretic2 [1:31pm]
AVault has posted a new preview of Heretic2 that is worth a look. There are a couple of new screenshots in the mix. Thanks Shanaynay Jenkins.

We had a big old deathmatch game here yesterday, to try and shake the code tree a little to see what fell out. Got a big old list of stuff to tidy up, but its certainly coming together. The morph Ovum needs work, but its still pretty cool... We are looking forward to hearing some feedback on the new interface we put to the front end of Heretic II.. its something a bit different - Brian Pelletier had some cool ideas in that direction

Prax War [1:31pm]
Billy Z updated his .plan file with some info on the Java integration of the Prax War engine. Also Blue posted a new screenshot. Here is a snip of the .plan update:

Everytime I wanted to make some "silly little test program" I would go to the trusty GLUT. Now GLUT is really damn cool, especially the new one, but everytime you go to write something, you end up having to rewrite the same things over and over again (or at least copy them from somewhere). Stuff like camera controls and texture loading. This is not a problem with GLUT, it was designed to be a platform independent windowing system for gl. About two weeks ago I realized that I had this perfectly good engine that I could use for the same purpose. So I build a little wrapper class called Mingine. While the full startup for the engine is only about twice as big, when you are writing a "silly little test program", the smaller, the better.

Thief Info [7:41am]
Looking Glass has posted an update with some new screenshots of Thief and more info

Ok, the new ad stuff is going live finally. If you guys have any problems with the page drop me a line at smiles@shugashack.com and tell me I'm dumb. Also, I can move that UGO logo in the left frame some place else (next to the banner) but I kinda preferred just slapping it over there instead.

GLUnreal This Week? [2:34pm]
Unreal OpenGL port this week? Here is a quote from Mark Rein

Short and sweet: Tim got some MP code back from Brandon and is reviewing it. OpenGL will be released this week.

Here is a bit of statements he made earlier:

There's a big difference between up and running nicely and being ready for release. For example: I first saw the OpenGL patch running nicely on Rendition several weeks ago. But you couldn't change resolutions or set any of the detail settings. So although it might have run nicely on my machine if it didn't run well on others' machines (because all the setting were peaked) then there was no recourse for those users to try and improve performance. That's not what I consider to be ready for release. There were a few other bugs that have since been squashed and there may still be a few bugs that make it into the first release but at least users can now choose resolutions and tune the settings to try and match the performance of the card to the spec of their system.

Where's Half-Life? [2:34pm]
GameSpot posted a blurb about the recent Sierra gaming show that was held up in Seattle and the absence of Half-Life.

Interestingly, Valve's Half-Life was nowhere to be seen. A Sierra spokesperson said that the reason for Half-Life's absence from the demo event was that Valve didn't want to show the game off since it is so close to completion. That's unfortunate because GameWorks had an area where gamers had a chance to play multiplayer Tribes and Starsiege in four pods. It would have been great to play the multiplayer portion of Half-Life in the area. An announcement from Sierra on Half-Life development is expected next week with more information on the final version of the game.

Interestingly enough, I was in Seattle at the time playing Half-Life while the show was going on. The guys were hard at work on the game and hardly felt like spending the extra time trying to get a fully capable copy to the show.

Windows Update [2:34pm]
The Windows Update is on it's way. Here is a list from the Microsoft page of what we can expect:

Suckage! [11:27pm]
What, you thought I would miss it? Just before the buzzer. The suckage of the day is posted. Tomorrow's weekly section should be on time in the morning, sorry bout the delay.

HD Q3 [10:7pm]
Dig on John Carmack's .plan update kids

I added support for HDTV style wide screen displays in QuakeArena, so 24" and 28" monitors can now cover the entire screen with game graphics.
---
On a normal 4:3 aspect ratio screen, a 90 degree horizontal field of view gives a 75 degree vertical field of view. If you keep the vertical fov constant and run on a wide screen, you get a 106 degree horizontal fov.
---
Because we specify fov with the horizontal measurement, you need to change fov when going into or out of a wide screen mode. I am considering changing fov to be the vertical measurement, but it would probably cause a lot of confusion if "fov 90" becomes a big fisheye.
---
Many video card drivers are supporting the ultra high res settings like 1920 * 1080, but hopefully they will also add support for lower settings that can be good for games, like 856 * 480.
---
---
I spent a day out at apple last week going over technical issues.
---
I'm feeling a lot better about MacOS X. Almost everything I like about rhapsody will be there, plus some solid additions. I presented the OpenGL case directly to Steve Jobs as strongly as possible.
---
If Apple embraces OpenGL, I will be strongly behind them. I like OpenGL more than I dislike MacOS. :)

Render Mania [8:07pm]
Dhabih Eng ran across the Glyphx.com page today and found a few new images of Heretic2, and SIN among others that are being used for stuff like t-shirts, boxes, etc. Check out these two:

Doh [5:37pm]
Well, my ad deal finally came through today and I've been busy working on getting the new ad code spread through my pages. (Have to customize it per page, ARGH) so the suckage is running even later. I should be done in 2-3 hrs (none of it is online yet) and have a good 2 pages of the Half-Life review written up now as well. Too many things at once, but honest this is good in the end.

EA Owns Westwood [4:17pm]
Electronic Arts(tm), the world's largest interactive entertainment software company, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to purchase all outstanding stock of Westwood Studios, Inc., and certain other studio assets of Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc., a division of Spelling Entertainment Group, Inc.. Check out this press release too. The deal is for 122 million bucks.

Blood2 [3:07pm]
The weekly Blood2 update has been posted on the Monolith page

Weapons: 20 of the 21 weapons are modeled, textured, and have initial effects. Once we finish that one stray weapon (the decapitator) we'll work on finishing up animations, finalizing effects, and finally, play balancing.

Cheaters [1:47pm]
As many people are fully aware, cheating in online tournaments, especially when money is involved is quite a problem. Check out the latest article over at csn.mpog.com

Just so you guys know, cheaters are some of the lowest forms of scum on earth. If you cheat you are a pathetic little turd who not only confirms to yourself every day that you cheat that you are a LOSER, but everyone else out there as well. Use cheat codes at home, not when it lessens the gaming experience for the rest of us though. Oh, and you're stupid.

btw, I'm changing off right now between suckage and my Half-Life preview.

Rainbow 6 Demo [1:47pm]
Thanks Robert "w00dy" Swinford for the word that PC Gamer has posted the downloadable demo of Rainbow 6. It's pretty involved and not exactly a shoot em up, but once you get going it is kinda cool.

Rainbow Six is an anti-terrorist simulation based on the best-selling novel by Tom Clancy. Although it is played from a first-person perspective it has little in common with Quake-style games. At the beginning of each mission you are given a briefing on the situation. From there you will choose the members of your assault squad and outfit them with the proper equipment.

Top Games of 98 [1:47pm]
From OGR: "PC Data released the top selling games of 1998 list today. Heading up the list, Deer Hunter from GT Interactive followed by StarCraft, Myst, Titanic: Adventure Out of Time and Microsoft Flight Simulator. Games of note: Quake II placed 7th, Unreal placed 15th and Links LS Golf 98 and NASCAR II are still in the top 20"

TNT vs Voodoo2 [1:47pm]
PC Fan has posted a new article taking a look at the latest TNT reference board in comparison with the Wicked Voodoo2.

G200 vs Voodoo2 [1:47pm]
MURC has posted their own G200 vs Voodoo2 comparison

As you can see from the benchmarks the Monster 3D II clearly beats out the Millenium G200 in every game tested, but most people know that from the many other reviews already done by various people. But I'll take a little closer look at how they compared in D3D and OpenGL modes.

Heretic2 [9:57am]
It's getting closer... Check out OGR's new preview of Heretic2 on this fine Monday.

Because things are from a third-person perspective, the weapon system will be a bit different than the first-person crowd is used to. Corvus' collection of explosive goodies includes a variety of spells and projectile weaponry, several of which are straight out of Heretic

Max Payne [8:37am]
If you are as excited as I am about Max Payne, you'd better check out the new preview that PCFan has put together for Remedy's project.

Lucy I'm Home [4:14am]
Well, I guess I'll apologize for the spotty updates during my trip to Seattle and Canada. I'm home now and will be staying up through the night catching up on the page and email. Stay tuned, grab some coffee, and stay up all night with me if you wish. :)

updated update: Doh, no suckage for a few hours.

Blood2 On Halloween [6:34am]
The GT Interactive page has announced that Blood2 will be released on Halloween. There is also a new discussion forum on the page as well as a few other things to keep you entertained.

Q2 MP Feature [6:34am]
Pat Magruder of Rogue Entertainment made a .plan update with word on a yet to have been mentioned feature coming in the new Quake2 Mission Pack.

I realized, after the show, that we totally forgot to mention our new multiplayer game .. Tag! A lot like regular deathmatch .. but with a significant twist. One of the players is IT .. don't worry, you can't miss it. You get bonus frags for killing the player who is it, as well as bonus frags for killing when you are it. Of course, if you manage to kill the person who is it, you get a nice bonus .. in the form of health and armor. There's more to it, of course, but that's enough for now. Suffice it to say it's a heck of a lot of fun.

Urban Assault Demo [6:34am]
A demo of Urban Assault was released a couple of days ago which was missed. Check out the GameSpot plug

The Urban Assault demo features six single-player levels, including two training mission levels, and players can create seven different types of vehicles. Each level offers a diverse sampling of vehicles, technology upgrades, and enemies. Two multiplayer levels are also available. Both are playable over a LAN with IPX or TCP/IP protocol as well as over the Internet Gaming Zone with a low-bandwidth connection. Support is also provided for Direct3D-compatible accelerator cards.

Man, it's nuts trying to catch up after several days off. See if I ever do that again. I've already started work on my lenghty preview/review of Half-Life after getting hours upon hours of hands on testing with the game as well as spending time talking with many of the developers. Of course I will have to send what I write over to Sierra/Valve first due to my having seen a bit of stuff that is not public though. (The price I pay for getting to see everything, well worth it.)
