About Shacknews

Shacknews keeps tech-savvy gamers informed about what's worth their time today and how they'll be playing tomorrow through compelling articles and video features.

Shacknews began in 1996 as a Quake fan site. It eventually grew to cover all games and platforms, but still maintains strong ties to its PC gaming roots.

EDITORIAL STAFF

Steve Watts

Editor-in-Chief

Steve Watts' youthful memories are are a blur of pixels, princesses, castles, and Mega Busters. After writing about games as a pastime for years, he got his first shot at a paid gig at 1UP. He's freelanced for several sites since then, and found a friendly home at Shacknews. His editorial duties include news, reviews, features, and lunatic ravings. He lives in the Baltimore-Washington area with his shockingly understanding wife.

Steven Wong

Managing Editor

Steven first started playing video games when he was seven years old, and not really sure what he was doing. His parents told him that playing games and reading comic books would rot his mind, which pretty much cemented them as a permanent hobbies. He went on to make a career out of playing and talking about games, and has written for various AOL websites over the years including Big Download and Joystiq using an unending supply of a Boston/New Jersey hybrid brand of sarcasm. His gaming weapon of choice is the mouse and keyboard.

Ozzie Mejia

Senior Editor

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what is video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Daniel Perez

News Editor

Daniel has worked across a variety of online publications that include 1UP, Ubergizmo and FileFront. He works as an editor at Shacknews.com and reports on the latest news as well as publishing previews, reviews and thought-provoking features. He would also totally kill for a burrito right about now.

Josh Hawkins

Freelancer

Josh is too busy playing games to provide a bio.

Brittany Vincent

Freelancer

Fueled by horror, rainbow-sugar-pixel-rushes, and video games, Brittany is a freelancer who thrives on surrealism and ultraviolence. Follow her on Twitter @MolotovCupcake and check out her portfolio for more. Like a fabulous shooter once, said, get psyched!

Andrew (center-left) lectures an increasingly angry Sam, Steven Wong, and Greg Burke about the merits of using Ness in Super Smash Bros.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Greg Burke

Video Editor, Content Producer

Greg is the site Lead Editor and Video Producer for the west coast. If you have ever enjoyed a video via gamerhub it was most likely edited by him. Greg's a G1 gamer with a film Degree who loves the hard work people put into their games and the people in the gaming industry. Follow him on twitter @Gburke85. Greg also owns his own Marketing/Editing business www.gregburkepost.com.

Bill Lavoy

Video Editor, Content Producer

Bill (also known as Rumpo) is a lifelong gamer, beer drinker, and lover of hockey. He is basically your stereotypical Canadian, to the point where he constantly says "eh" and makes caribou references. When Rumpo isn't working with the Shacknews video team or live streaming he is most likely trying to spread the word about how fantastic poutine really is.

Samantha Leichtamer

Host

Sam’s relationship with video games started at the age of 4 when her father bought a Super Nintendo for her birthday. From that point she was hooked on gaming. Birthdays and Christmases guaranteed new games to play. Overall, PS2 is her favorite console of all time but she enjoys PC gaming as well. She loves the competitive atmosphere of games like League of Legends and enjoys learning new things from other players. She also takes her gaming outdoors and is a part of the Live Action Role Playing community. While many gamers classify themselves as hardcore or casual she prefers to just call herself just a gamer. “We are all gamers whether you are trying to grind it out on Candy Crush or in the lab trying to learn some new combos.”

Eric Shugg

Video Editor, Content Producer

After winning the 1999 North American MarioKart 64 championship, Eric took a temporary leave of absence from gaming, only to once again come back strong into the industry as a member of the Shacknews video team. When Eric is not producing and editing content for Shack, he can be found giving FIFA soccer lessons in the Shacknews Northeast office, where he remains undefeated, or swimming in the crystal blue waters of the Jersey Shore.

Joe Tirado

Video Editor, Content Producer

Joe Tirado is a nature seeking vagrant, avid footwear enthusiast, and a designer/lensman. He was a casual gamer until he met his lifelong companion, Dogmeat, and the rest is history. Professionally he has worked as a visual gun for hire for some top tier brands, (a.k.a the man) before signing a veteran minimum deal with ShackNews. These days you might find him chasing lighthouses, beating KOTOR for the 10th time, perfecting his mango salsa recipe, or camping in the wilds of the east coast.

Michael Wang

Producer

Once a gamer, always a gamer.

Andrew Zucosky

Video Editor, Content Producer

Andrew is part of the new video team for Shacknews and occasionally shouts at birds. He has been playing video games for most of his life and started getting good at them like, last week. When Andrew is not playing D&D or making Airplane! references he is probably playing a video game (LoL or whatever is in his 3DS) or trying to sleep.

Joe and his briefcase host an in-depth look at Forza Horizon 2. Bonus points for the Nintendo 64DD on the shelf.

ADMINISTRATION

Asif Khan

CEO

Asif Khan is the primary investor in Shacknews. He began his career in video game journalism as a freelancer in 2001. He currently still writes for GamesIndustry.biz as their financial reporter. Asif is a CPA and was formerly an investment adviser representative. After much success in his own personal investments, Asif retired from his day job in financial services and is currently focused on new private investments. His favorite PC game of all time is Duke Nukem 3D, and he is an unapologetic fan of most things Nintendo. Asif first frequented the Shack when it was sCary's Shugashack to find all things Quake. When he is not immersed in investments or gaming he is a purveyor of fine electronic music.

John Gaudiosi has been covering the video game industry since he started writing for The Washington Post as an undergrad at George Mason University. Since then he's spent the past 25 years writing about games for outlets like AOL, The Hollywood Reporter, Maxim, Forbes, Reuters, ESPN, Entertainment Weekly, Men's Journal, Wired, Yahoo and Tribune Syndication. He currently serves as co-founder of Gamerhub Content Network and editorial director of Shacknews.com. When he's not covering games, he's rescuing dogs with his wife through www.soundpet.org.

Jen Benyamine

Production Coordinator, Host

Jen has worked in various capacities for publications like GameDaily Family Guide and Games.com, and is currently the production coordinator for Shacknews. She is also host of 8-bit Cuisine on the Shacknews YouTube channel, and has a culinary background from the International Culinary Institute in New York City.

Joe Stasio

Art Director

Joe is a bearded, restless creative. A self-taught geek at heart, Joe began his design, development, and audio career at the ripe age of 18. While in college, he quickly learned that the only way to develop his skills was to teach himself. After a 2-year stint with a nationally touring band and a 7 year tenure as a freelance designer, developer, and audio engineer, Joe sought the glowing comfort of the Shack, and is proudly residing there now. Today, he is feverishly grinding on projects un-seen and looks forward to revealing his creations to the community when the time comes. When Joe isn’t working, he can be found waiting for highly anticipated Xbox games to stop being delayed, for goodness sake.

Charles Barker

Sales and Marketing

Charles helps focus Shacknews on actually making some money through advertising and special programs that add value to the company. He comes to Shacknews from Gigex and GameDaily, and you’ll most likely hear him being a smart ass in the background of many a Shacknews livestream.
