Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Officially Announced, Splinter Cell: Conviction Includes Beta Access

The new entry in Ubisoft's tactical shooter Ghost Recon known previously only as 'Ghost Recon 4' will be named Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and be released during the 2010 holiday season, the publisher announced today.

Few details were given, other than it's coming from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter developer Ubisoft Paris and a press release boasts of "cutting-edge technology, prototype high-tech weaponry, and state-of-the-art single-player and multiplayer modes."

Invitations to a multiplayer beta running this summer will "for a limited time" be bestowed upon players buying Splinter Cell Conviction on Xbox 360, whose release date has been set in stone for on April 13 in North America then April 16 in Europe.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will be released simultaneously in the 2010 holiday season, according to Ubisoft senior community developer Kimi Matsuzaki on Twitter, while she also says "We will tell more about the PC version later."

'Ghost Recon 4' was initially scheduled for release before the end of March 2010 before being pushed back to between April 2010 and the end of of March 2011. Apparently development has picked up pace since Future Warrior was last heard from.

Dead Space 2 No Longer Coming to PC, Survey Suggests XBLA & PSN Ports of Dead Space Wii

Feb 09, 2010 8:20am CST tags: Dead Space 2, Dead Space Extraction, Rumor
The PC edition of Dead Space 2 was conspiciously abscent from EA's fiscal year 2011 release lineup revealed yesterday--because apparently there is no longer a PC edition.

"As of right now a PC sku is not in the plan," an EA representative told Blue's News. No reason was given for scrapping the PC edition, which the video games colossus announced alongside Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions a mere three months ago.

The original Dead Space and Dead Space Extraction.

Though Dead Space sold over one million copies in a period of under two months, PC sales evidently accounted for too small a percentage of those sales by EA's standards.

Meanwhile, an EA survey received by Kotaku suggests that the on-rails shooter Dead Space: Extraction--which sold poorly when it was release on Wii in September--might receive an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network release potentially for $15.

The survey also revealed we may see a "resource strategy game" named 'Planet Cracker,' which tasks players with maximizing profit and defending ore from "Space Pirates" and could provide in-game rewards in Dead Space 2.

Coming from series creator Visceral Games, Dead Space 2 is slated to hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and an unspecified handheld between January 1 and March 31, 2011.

BioShock 2 Chat Thread and Discussion

Feb 09, 2010 7:00am CST tags:
2K's subaqueous sequel BioShock 2 launched worldwide today and many of you might already have a copy in your hands. Steam copies are now unlocked, midnight openings were held in thousands of stores, and my own Special Edition arrived in the post today.

I only had time to install and see the first few minutes so I can't say much about the game yet but I can tell you that this seems a splendid Special Edition. What I like most is that the art book's a proper chunky hardcover affair with great glossy artwork and interesting factoids--a most welcome change from the flimsy magazine-quality art 'books' often found in SEs, CEs and the like. The other gubbins are lovely too.

Did you opt for console or PC? How do you feel about returning to Rapture? Are you one of the skeptics yet unconvinced and, if so, why? To hide spoiler-y material, encase the questionable content in question within o[spoiler tags]o, as demonstrated right there.

Here's all previous BioShock 2 coverage for reference. A half-dozen new short gameplay trailers also arrived this morning and can be found over on FileShack.

Morning Discussion

Feb 09, 2010 7:00am CST
How can one sum up Tuesday February 9, 2010, in a single, short Morning Discussion? Probably with a link to a video of possibly the world's first natural sighting of an oarfish. The ocean is mysterious, wonderful and amazing and one day will destroy us all. If we're lucky, the ocean's life will be responsible for our downfall. We can but dream.

On a related note, today we have a dedicated BioShock 2 Chat Thread for all you Rapturian rotters to share their gossip and watery whispers. Chat-a-chat.

EA Talks Day One DLC Success, 2010 Strategy

Feb 08, 2010 9:00pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, DLC, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, The Sims 3
In a conference call Q&A after their earnings report, Electronic Arts executives waxed about recent successes and strategies with downloadable content.

EA CEO John Riccitiello shared the motivation behind their inclusion of paid DLC in all their titles this year. "We sort of initiated our approach here originally with NBA Live with Dynamic DNA almost a year-and-a-half ago. In every case, what we've seen is a very positive response from the consumer and in each case, particularly with Dragon Age, a strong pickup in revenue per user. By and large, they like the extra content and we think it's a strong positive move...we've got similar strong PDLC programs with all of our titles this year."

COO John Schappert embellished on the success of Dragon Age DLC. "We had downloadable content in addition to the pack-in content, if you will, available for purchase on day one. The first week, we did over a million dollars in sales on that title... Read more

Evening Reading: Games Need Better Endings

Feb 08, 2010 8:00pm CST
Watching the credits to Mass Effect 2 all I could think about was the continuing struggle it seems to be for video games to nail an ending. It's one of the clearer examples of the hurdles designers face in uniting the narrative of a game with the playing of it. While an uneasy balance can often be struck during most of the game, climactic moments expose that fractured relationship between the two.

After the ongoing internal push-pull between the action and the narrative for dominance throughout the game, this particularly held true in Mass Effect 2. I appreciate the dilemma facing the team at the end. With so much invested in improving the combat for the sequel there had to be this tremendous sense of need for a big payoff. From there it must have been a very short road to the cliched ending sequence that resulted.

Giving in to that -- taking the easy way in a sense by falling back on formulaic design -- took the wind out of my sails at the worst possible point in the game. As the culmination of my investment in the game and its world this bizarre and hokey encounter felt out of place and left me unsatisfied. It didn't help matters that the execution of it came off as completely cheesy as well, but I chalk that up to being symptomatic of that sort of design.

In the end (hah!), Mass Effect 2 succeeds in spite of its ending. That speaks to the quality of its journey. With the tech now completely conquered maybe the final installment can bring things to a more satisfying conclusion.

Final Fantasy 13 Developers Claim It Will 'Resurrect' the Japanese Game Industry

Feb 08, 2010 5:50pm CST tags: Final Fantasy XIII, Screenshots
In anticipation of the European and North American releases of Final Fantasy 13 this March, producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama recently responded to fan-submitted questions about the RPG on PlayStation.Blog.Europe.

Toriyama and Kitase discussed topics such as the game's 50-60 hour length -- about ten hours of which they said are cinematics -- and the optional side-missions that can effectively double the play-time. The possibility of a CG movie adaptation along the lines of Advent Children was also mentioned.

In addition to the expected tidbits about the game itself, the team shared some expectations for the long-lived series. When asked about the current state of the Japanese game industry, the duo acknowledged that while some critics forecast its death, they're not so sure they see it the same way. "With this game [Final Fantasy 13], we are going to resurrect the whole thing," they claimed.

Early last month, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada raised doubts as to whether the company would continue to develop more games that would be considered traditional Final Fantasy titles... Read more

Backbreaker Trailer Looks Behind-the-Scenes

Feb 08, 2010 4:50pm CST tags: Backbreaker, Trailer
Taking a few stabs at competitor Madden NFL, developer NaturalMotion uses this developer diary to detail how its physics-driven PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 footballer Backbreaker differs from other games. For example, a lower camera view.

"You're not this kind of, god over the football field who can see everything," explains tester Mike O'Neill. Another example? The use of pink character outlines to highlight the procedural animations--though sadly, that particular aspect seems like the sort of development tool that won't be accessible to the end users come Spring 2010.

L.A. Noire 'Apparently' Due in September

Feb 08, 2010 4:10pm CST tags: L.A. Noire
Team Bondi's former PlayStation 3 exclusive L.A. Noire is "apparently coming in September," according to games journalist and GameTrailers TV host Geoff Keighley.

The release window reveal came in the form of a tweet Keighley made after reading the new issue of Game Informer, which features the old-fashioned game on its cover. "It definitely sounds interesting," he added.

While L.A. Noire was originally announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, an Xbox 360 edition of the long-coming project--originally due by September 2009--was recently confirmed, with Keighley noting that both versions are due at the same time.

New Fable 3 Info Will 'Really Upset People,' Says Creator Peter Molyneux

Feb 08, 2010 12:30pm CST tags: Fable 3, Project Natal, X10
Lionhead Studios head Peter Molyneux has made another one of his famous bold claims, teasing that an upcoming revelation about Fable III will "really upset people."

The tease emerged as part of a Gamereactor International video, with Molyneux stating:

We're making a big announcement about Fable III in the next couple of weeks [at X10]...I hope I haven't spoiled some horrible PR surprise. Gulp. We'll be making some announcements about Fable III and there's some, wow, there's some very, very big things happening in Fable. Bigger than you think, and it's going to really upset people. I'm really scared when I go out and tell people what it is, they're going to get super pissed off. They really are. But it's the right thing to do, man. I'm sure it's the right thing.

A showcase of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 360 efforts, X10 takes place this Thursday, February 11, in San Francsico. Molyneux has previously noted that "there's something fundamentally wrong with RPGs like Fable," and vowed that the 2010-due third entry in the action-RPG series would somehow "take that foundation stone and throw it away."

The man later revealed that Fable III would include a microtransaction store--selling, for example, an in-game sword at 1 euro--and also support the Xbox 360's upcoming motion-tracking add-on Project Natal, though to what extent is currently unknown.

New Red Dead Redemption screenshots give a look at the many uses of the lasso in Rockstar San Diego's open-world wild western, from roping wild horses when you need a ride to hog-tieing hoodlums so you can safely cash in lucrative live bounties.

Red Dead Redemption arrives on April 27 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Rockstar San Diego recently faced accusations of working staff ridiculously hard, though a response from the developer was quite dismissive of the "opinions of a few anonymous posters."
